  • GDD Great GDD; it hits all the marks. Great work. Gameplay I love puzzles. I hate the dark. I love fire. I hate moths. Are you in my walls? The balance between the resolve and the intensity of the light source is great. I loved that each level is random, and sometimes, even the humble spinny arrow trapcan be your undoing. The fuel management was a pretty nice touch. And I hate time limits. Art design Lovely art direction; the sprites are great and with plenty of variety. Well animated, even with low light. The shadows and darkness were very well implemented here. Sound design Spooky BMG added a lot to the game atmosphere. The simple SFX meshes all with the air of desolation of being stuck in a dungeon with nothing to keep yourself safe. Little thoughts This was a pretty great use of light mechanics and resolve as health; it made for an immersive and fun experience. Good job.

Have you checked that your GDD is publicly accessible ?
yes

Is your game set to public on itch.io so we can see it?
yes

Summarize your game!
The player controls a character using standard WASD inputs to navigate a randomly generated dungeon and find its end. Each level will have rooms that are filled with various items, and players can find lights. If a player finds a light, they can use it but they can only carry one at a time, discarding their old item onto the ground. Some lighting implements will need the player to have a way to ignite or turn them on. Be mindful of carrying strong lights however! Even the small critters such as the local moths can harm you by stifling your light if they get attracted to your light source.

Please explain how your game fits the theme.
Artistically the design of having a background story of a solo explorer being lost in a dungeon fits the theme of only one as there are no other NPCs to interact with and the concept is to give a strong feeling of being truly alone in the dark. Mechanically, the game tries to lean into the theme by emphasizing the ability to carry only one light item at a time.

Is there anything you'd like the judges to pay particular attention to?
Brightness is important, if the brightness feels too dim, it's better to lean toward brighter so it's at least fun

Nice game! Kind of a reminded me of Adventure strangely enough

I like it, though it took me a number of tries to make it to any length. I kept thinking the spike pits were something I could light on fire. The variety of items is a great addition, though it took me a few levels before I saw them. I would also like to see some way to gain resolve (maybe at the cost of some torchlight, etc). Great atmosphere and good use of lighting!

thanks for the feedback! I indeed did implement a way to get it through items (there are pills you can get) however I was way too late to realize I needed to tweak the drop rates massively! Thanks so much for trying it out and thank you re: the atmosphere and lighting!

Great concept, and fun atmosphere!  I was confused about creatures being attracted to the light, but when I saw the notes about moths, it made more sense.
I did have to crank the brightness all the way to make out much of anything (could be my monitor, etc.)
It reminds me of playing Haunted House on my Atari 2600 way back when, but your game has a much more effective vibe that that one did! :)

Thank you so much for trying out the game :). I am glad the notes help but this feedback is still super great and I think it is good to point out some exposition on the mechanics could be better! Noting also the brightness as I can adjust the range easily and it may make more sense to do so to cover more setups! Also let's be fair to the Atari ;) We have much more compute now for me to abuse :D. Cheers!
