It's one boss, and you keep leveling up, but there is no winning...endless battle until one of you drops...and it won't be the Nightmare King

Like the concept of the game but as others have mentioned the game does feel a bit too grindy, however the game was fun and would love to see a full game of this released!

Developer

Thanks! There will be an update as soon as the Game Jam is over, then one more with save-data.

But nothing will help! You'll NEVER defeat us!!!

I love the idea. Having always the same boss-fight but growing stronger is super intriguing. Buuuut it does take to long for meaningful increases in your stats. I also think some more visual or tangential changes as you die would have been nice. Maybe the addition of a dodge button or so?

Also the intro sequence takes just a smidge too long for how often you have to see it.

I love the quippy dialogue but maybe it could have played while you are already in the fight instead of having to finish it first?

Furthermore I would have loved to play with wasd and other buttons than z and x especially while playing on a qwertz-keyboard.

The art is impeccable and the music is really great!

Thanks for playing! Working on adjusting the stat increases per level. In terms of dodging...I dunno. Maybe an item like in Link's Awakening? But that would be in a hypothetical later update. (You should try my other game Killer Bun, that's all about dodging!)

In terms of the intro and dialog, you do have the X button to skip along dialog. Planning to find a way to properly showcase controls in-game. Also working on alt. keyboard controls.

But nothing will help! You can never defeat us!!!

I really like it, but man do you have to grind out deaths. Until like level 80 I felt there was no chance, and I finally beat him at level 92. Its weird that the game encourages you to just die over and over and over. I would straight up go into the room with the plan to die. That said I love the boss design. The attacks are great. Phase 2 is really fun, and the way the boss kept adding more and more attacks was really cool. But the way your mechanic works takes so much time. At the level I was at we were both tickling each other, but his feather was slightly softer than mine. For the second phase, it felt straight up more effective to just tank some attacks because you got more damage in than they did. An idea I had for this to work, is that every time you do damage you get XP, and every time you die, you lose 10% XP. That way death is punishing, and every run through you want to get more XP than you lose. Also make the boss have way less health, having to die so many times to be able to damage them is a bit much. I also think that the player gets too much health per level as well. I shouldnt be able to take 20 hits when I can finally deal damage to them. Its a great game, dont get me wrong, but I think it needs a bit of fine tuning (: Either way amazing work for 4 days!

Yeah, I did notice the curve not moving towards the player's favor as fast as intended during testing. Also, I did had the idea of EXP from damage (couldn't due to time), but I like the idea of losing EXP as well...we'll have to see...

Also, I think you're the first one to mention actually beating it, so I'll take it as if you are the first one to actually BEAT it, so congrats!...but you also didn't. It's a loop, and you can never defeat us!!!

Awesome boss battler. Wasn’t able to beat it myself but was still a fun experience. Great work!

While I enjoyed the game at first, racing into battle with BURNING EYES, I had to call it quits. Not because I don't think I could do it, but that the boss just has way too much HP, even after 5 minutes of constantly landing hits and not getting hit, their HP barely budged! I assumed for a while that maybe the staff does less damage, but as far as I can tell, both weapons are pretty ineffective. I'm all for the perseverance style bosses that ask you to get you butt kicked and come back for another round, but the game started to get a bit boring due to how much it dragged on. I think cutting the boss's HP to a point that wouldn't require such a massive time investment would have been nice.
However, I want it to be very clear that this game was well made. The art and music were on point, and the boss's attacks felt fair, if difficult. When the jam is over, I might take another crack at winning this fight, but I'll save that for when I have time to sit down and slowly widdle that purple bar to nothing. Well done overall!

Thanks for playing! Hope your BURNING EYES get better soon...heh.

Anyways, yeah, this boss has a TON of HP (over five thousand), but that's the whole point. You are going into this final-boss fight at LV 1. It has higher DEF, and you have low ATK (sword is stronger than want). But, you get stronger each time you die, and your LV, HP, ATK, and DEF raises up. I don't expect unsuspecting players to make good progress until LV 10.

That said, I do plan to adjust the rate of increase ATK a bit. Also, the boss seems a bit more hefty because I took out a phase (due to it being unfinished), but left the hp the same and adjusted the two phases's HP requirement. With the third phase, it seems a bit more quicker. I plan to update the game to include the third phase when I finish it. I will also update the game after the game jam with a new map, some cool effects, and more dialog (I'll keep adding and adding...)

Now, let's get to the main point: this is a hard fight. I would be very surprised if someone beat this thing LV 1, because that will take a lot of dedication, skills, and luck. But the whole loop is you going back to try again. Each time you die, you get stronger, but the boss stays the same. You'll keep getting stronger, and stronger, and stronger...

...

...until you can beat that thing Six-Ways to Sunday.

I do plan to add a save system, to further drive the point home that you'll keep getting stronger as the loop stays intact. However, I'm debating whether or not to add it for the level system, or wait for the third phase to be done. We'll have to see how long it takes.

Still, post-jam update immediately after voting period. Check it out. Added some cool-looking stuff.

So come back some time! Maybe you can defeat it!

...

Probably not.

AH, stat's scale with level, that makes a lot more sense. A lot of my lower level runs were lasting quite a while, so that's probably why it felt like it dragged, I was supposed to get my butt kicked harder! I'll definately return for the rematch post jam! Nice work here still!

Frustrating but very interesting :) Great artwork, really. It feels very polished ! You won, I quit. Congrats!

Developer

Thanks! ...and I told you! You can never defeat us!!!

I love boss battles so yeah!! Cool game!

Developer

Thanks! But that still doesn't change the fact that you can never defeat us!!! Let's rumble!

How did you get this game looking so good?! I was immediately brought back to my 8-bit console childhood days. Really fun even just to see what the boss will say next! Superb job!

Developer

Thanks! Just some simple sprites using a NES palette, posterize effect, and a bulge effect, along with a looping tile sprite for that screen effect.

Glad you enjoyed the dialog. I plan to add more after the game jam. Gonna be necessary, though, as you can never defeat us!!! Let’s rumble!

Hahahahah interesting concept, tried to solve it at a puzzle but haven't thought of any ways how to do that. Style is really fascinating!

Thanks! Glad you enjoyed it.

…but you can never solve it! You can never defeat us!!! Let’s rumble!
