  • Really cool concept! Really fun gameplay, the last level was fairly challenging, there was a good hidden story there, too! The simple style helps players pick up the game fairly quickly. A few things to note: It could be an improvement to add some BG music. If you want to stick to the arcade theme, some chip tune could work really well. Music sets the theme of the entire game and ties it all together, a simple addition could improve an already interesting experience quite a bit. Suggestion for the future: Include more enemy types, perhaps, instead of them all being slowed down or sped up, a variety of slow and fast or more bouncy could help make the game more challenging and open the game for more levels by playing on the "Only let the certain enemies touch the power-ups" idea. All in all, really well made game! Thanks for making this and keep making cool things!

Have you checked that your GDD is publicly accessible ?
Yes

Is your game set to public on itch.io so we can see it?
Yes

Summarize your game!
You control the last brick in a brick breaker style game. Just move the mouse to move the brick. Lead the balls to powerups to progress, but avoid being broken.

Please explain how your game fits the theme.
The theme is "Only One", and this reminded me of playing Breakout and Brick Breaker style games where it always gets difficult when you're down to the last brick in the stage. There's only one brick, but it's always the most difficult to break. I wanted to try an interesting twist where you are that last brick, just trying to survive against a player out to get you.

Is there anything you'd like the judges to pay particular attention to?
I'm particularly happy with how the mouse movement controls turned out. The balls in the level seem a bit bouncy, but that was intentional: the balls need to follow you to increase the difficulty, but without the bounciness it felt less like a reference to breakout and more like a generic "avoid the enemies" style game. It was surprising to me that the bounciness and semi-randomness actually increased the difficulty, which I felt improved the fun given how short the game is. I hope I struck the right balance!

This is a great game, I love the mechanic. The balls want to break you, but you need to help the balls get the coins. Excellent first game jam entry!

Thank you for playing my game! I definitely think I could have improved it with more time (especially level 4), but overall I'm just happy I finished in time.

Pretty good especially for a first jam game! I like that the walls look inspired by the brick breaker paddle. I think level 4 is absurdly slow. I get that it's supposed to be slow, but I think it's too slow to a point where if the ball misses it feels frustrating to have to wait to try again.

Difficulty wasn't too bad. Good job

Developer

Thanks for playing my game and for your feedback! And yep, you're not alone in your feedback on level 4. Definitely something I should look out for in future games. Concept is ok and all, but it also needs to have good gameplay, and I think I missed the mark on level 4.

Posted this on the page, but reposting it here as jam submission feedback to boost your game up the ladder

Very cool twist on classic Brick Breaker! That last level is stressful, but it tends to be that I can just hide behind the final coin and will win before I could lose. Maybe some sorta extra challenge via having to live for a few seconds after the last collection would  make that strategy less prevalent. Also that BXFR coin sfx is brutally loud!

But other than those two small notes, a very cool entry into this jam

Great work!

that's cool! each level has a twist that makes it all different, i like it!

Thanks for playing! Yeah, I knew I only had time to make a small handful of levels, so I tried to make them each have a theme or gimmick to make them memorable, with the first level acting as a sort of tutorial level. Hopefully I succeeded at least partially! :) Thanks again!

The game is good as it is! But personally I would add sound for collisions with wall. And some music, if I could find something fitting. Especially for dark and slow levels.

Developer

Thanks for playing my game and for the feedback!

Yeah, I feel ya about the music. I don't know how to make music myself, and I worry about using free or even paid music collections as I'm trying to avoid AI generated slop, and it seems asset stores are full of it now. I am trying to learn LMMS for some simple music, but it's slow going heh. Will try to incorporate some simple music in future games though! I did try to add a sound effect for collisions with walls, but I couldn't find one that didn't become obnoxious and annoying and repetitive. I had it on my todo list to keep looking but I ran out of time. I was going to try making a handful of collision sounds and randomizing them so they weren't so repetitive, but yeah. Thanks again for the feedback!

I think this was well executed, and the level design was pretty cool. I like how you added a twist with each level that made it fresh.
