Judge feedback

Judge feedback is anonymous.

  • You say in your description that the web build has some issues compared to the download, please make sure that your web release is up to par with the download because the judges will only judge the web version. Starting off with the game I really like the 3d interactive menu, very nicely made. First thing I noticed going into the game is that the UI doesn't react well to me fullscreening the game, it goes very small, as well as some missing fonts / icons on the UI. The movement in this game is very straightforward and functional, but at the same time it can be hard to see where you're going when the outside of the walls in the house are obscuring your vision of the inside. In the beginning I had no idea what to do because right clicking things didn't work like the instructions said, but then I found out that pressing E does work! After that I got the hang of the game and it was a pretty solid little demo. The environmental design is pretty, you put a lot of effort into some little details like the travelling animations. I would love to see this idea built more, for example I think it would be super cool if when you travel you actually go to these areas and you can walk around there. This holds a lot of potential and I hope you keep expanding on it!

Have you checked that your GDD is publicly accessible ?
Yes

Is your game set to public on itch.io so we can see it?
Yes

Summarize your game!
The player lives alone in a house which he must protect to survive. In order to protect his home the player needs to get out of his house and collect resources by picking any location on the map, different places give different resources but the player should be aware that every visit costs valuable time, therefore the player needs to plan ahead in order to survive the nights. While it’s night zombies are outside the player's house so he can’t get any more resources and the player needs to repair all his windows to defend himself against the undead masses lurking outside.

Please explain how your game fits the theme.
The player is the ONLY ONE left of humanity, and his house is the only place that's still habitable.

Is there anything you'd like the judges to pay particular attention to?
This is a very early build (Might be a bit buggy). It only features a very simple game loop and serves as a demonstration of what it’s meant to become. The focus is mostly on the design. I still hope you enjoy it a bit! (Nearly 200 hours of work) (Important! The Windows build is recommended, as the web version is missing some fonts and symbols)

There is the foundation for a great game here, actually. A few things I liked:
The character animates when walking around the home (I'm still struggling to learn skinning, so I'm always impressed when someone accomplishes this lol). The title screen is well done, with animated menu transitions after selecting options. You've got some simple interactions with boarding up windows and the exterior door. Doors open when you walk by them and through them. Pretty slick. I actually like the overworld map - reminds me of oldschool fallout games actually. I think if you had time to expand on this, I would make each visitable place a 3D environment too, maybe with certain actions in that environment take time, etc...

Some improvements you might make:

Sound effects and music would help improve the atmosphere and tension of the game. Some of the interactable elements I think should use the left click instead of the right click - most users would be more familiar with being able to just left click things that they can interact with. Maybe have an outline effect on interactable objects. The UI needs to scale with higher resolutions. I was playing in fullscreen on a 4K TV and the 2D UI was quite small (thought the 3D menu screen was perfect). I really love the transition from the main menu to the game where it zooms in, but it maybe takes a liiiiitle bit too long. Or maybe it just needs some ominous music heh. Finally, if you decide to continue working on the project, it would be great to have other mechanics like food/water, bandages when you get hurt, traps to setup in your home, and so on.

Overall, excellent entry! I hope you continue to improve it!

Thank you so much for your positive feedback!
I’ve already started improving the game and adding more of the missing features. You gave me some great ideas I hadn’t thought of before – like the traps! :o

You had some really cool ideas here actually! Good job!

The camera needed a lot of work, since it spend a lot of its time clipped into walls. I dont know if there was a gameplay loop? nothing could be interacted with, and the time never advanced. Still though, i could see a cool game being built on these foundations with some QoL tweaks and a gameplay loop

Developer

Thank you for your feedback!
Yeah, the walls definitely need to be hidden so the camera doesn’t clip into them. The gameplay loop is still very limited at the moment,  time only advances when the player is traveling or looting on the map, or during nighttime (9 PM – 6 AM). Currently, the only interactables are the bed, door, and window (right-click).

oh theres a map?! i didnt even notice aha. nothing seemed to point me towards going outside

Developer (1 edit)

I sadly didn’t have time for outlines (or smt. else), but you can enter the map by right clicking on the front or garden door and explore until nighttime. (The loot tables are the same for all locations atm.).
