First of all the game seems well polished. The audio and selfmade art fits perfectly to the feel of the scene and the dangers get more difficult over time + you have a "side objective" with the crates.
Sometimes it is hard to tell whether a boat gets "wrecked" or dodges an obstacle. I would like to see an indicator, so I know "eh, the captain knows. the light source is enough!"
There is not a lot left to discover after the first or second attempt. Maybe new boat/ stone types and an increasing map size could work.
You did a great job. Especially given the short timeframe to plan everything out. The game felt pretty well designed.
Thank you!! Agree with all your suggestions.
It's definitely too hard to tell if a boat can see the rock and is steering around it. I wonder if just having an "!" pop up over a boat when it sees a rock would have been enough? That's something I could have implemented in time, I just didn't think of :/
I like the general idea of the game and especially the polish and execution of the game. The art also fits the the game really well., but it is not a game I would see my self enjoying more than a few runs. Maybe some sort of Rogue-like upgrades could be a way of keeping players engaged.
For one I would suggest to include a little tutorial and secondly I had a hard time to see whether ships actually saw the rock I was shining light on. I think some sort of visual feedback would help a lot.
Thanks!! Yeah it's hard to imagine it as a full game unfortunately. You could add roguelike upgrades, different boats, different monsters, different maps, etc...
For sure needed a tutorial and I think some kind of indicator on the ships as well. Like maybe just an "!" pops up over the ship when it sees a rock in front of it?
I think the "!" is a good idea and it doesn't clutter the screen and it is really good considering the time frame of 48h :)
Good idea; we need to stay focused on every boat at the same time, and the difficulty increases with time. It's a good little arcade game. You could make the animation smoother by adding more frames to the boats. Also, you could add a little "guide" or "how to play" before launching the game when we set play. The artworks can be upgraded, but it's already good for a 48h game. Maybe, having a scoreboard at the end of or the best score would be a good addition.
Thank you!! These are all really good suggestions!
Going to make sure I budget time for a tutorial next jam. A scoreboard would have been really cool for a game like this too. Would have liked to see what scores ppl were getting
After playing 3–4 games, it’s fine for me, but if we don’t link all the rules of the game on the itch page, new players won’t understand how to play.
I would say there’s also a missing button to show the tutorial at the beginning of the game — even if it’s just text.
Otherwise it's a good arcade game and fun to playFinally, I feel like the boats don’t give enough feedback: it’s hard to understand in which direction they are going, or whether they have actually seen the rock.
Thanks!! Yeah the game needed a tutorial but ran out of time
And agree with your other feedback. Only having sprites for down, diagonal, and side makes it a bit tough to see what the ships are doing. Probably would have been better to go full top-down and rotate a single sprite
And also thought of giving an indicator like an "!" when they see the rocks
Actually quite fun! I felt like ATC there for a moment :) Gameplay difficulty is on point and increases over time just right.
Thank you!! It does start to feel like an Air Traffic Control sim lol
Took me a second to figure out what i was doing, even after reading the description, but its a really cool idea! its fun to manage all the difference things going on, maybe you could expand upon this game after the jam with upgrades & automation, different types of ships, etc.
Thanks!! Yeah the game needed a tutorial for sure
