Beard doing Beard things in this jam entry!

As always, your story telling, humor and voiced parts are great. There characters felt alive with their animations and whatever you use to sync up your voice with facial animations is perfect. The framework you use to transition between scenes is incredibly smooth.

I got a good chuckle out of the emo dude. I personally hated the emo scene in high school, but god help me since all my friends still love it. For some reason, I also found the skunk guy hilarious. Just walking around constantly unable to stay in one place. Maybe he just reminded me of myself. Oh! and the little intermissions explaining how some people got disqualified. Funny about what happened to the last guy. It ties in well with my game!

Your scenes were incredibly detailed without any performance hits. Framerates stayed smooth throughout the entire experience. I also really enjoyed the night goggle effect. It had the real potential to burn my eyes out, but yours was balanced and felt natural.

Some Notes
- The run time and pacing were a bit off. It being primarily a VR movie, it needed more ups and downs with action. It felt like I was going down a steady stream story wise the entire time without much fluctuation. Some pacing would have helped more with engagement.
- One of the bumps that got me was the Day X scenes. Since this screen (although different backgrounds) is shown between every scene, it starts to feel like you're just watching a Day X screen half the time. I think you're mimicking the show, but for this experience, it just slows down the progress of the story. Cutting it out and just adding it to the scene with the character talking would have chopped off a lot of runtime and maintained engagement.

Your work continues to just get better and better. There is a massive amount of content in this submission. Detailed environments, synced up voice acting, comedy, scripts for multiple characters, great audio, and smooth transitions! Thank you for your hard work on this entry! I'm always excited to enter the world of the Beard. Hope to see you for the Halloween Jam!

For some reason when I load the  game my controllers don't seem to be tracking. Bummer because I was really feeling the vide you set up with your opening.

Developer

That's the first report I've heard of that. Beyond the main menu there is no controller activity as this is just a viewing experience but are you saying they don't even work on the main menu? If so what hardware are you using? Do any of the other PCVR titles have that problem for you in the same session?

Submitted

I could see the controllers but they were at my feet not moving. I was on a quest 3 connected to the pc. I didn’t have this issue with the other pc title that I tried.

I loved it! The humor, voice acting, and story were so funny! How did you do the lip-syncing? I can see that there were textures for the different mouth shapes, but how did you sync it up with the voice? Well done!

Appreciate it! Very glad you enjoyed it. I used Rhubarb: a free command line utility you can grab from GitHub. Another option is Salsa but Rhubarb is best suited for matching up mouth shapes with Sprites like I've done here.

Another genius and unique Jam entry - I always look forward to playing your stuff!

I'm not familiar with the Alone TV show, so I perhaps didn't get some of the in-jokes, but it was entertaining none the less. The environment was exceptionally detailed and gave a great feeling of being lost in the woods, as well as the time of day changes and smooth transitions. This in contrast with the surreal characters, it gave a very unique look and feel to the whole thing.

The characters, although surreal looking, were full of life and the animation and lip syncing made them feel believable (which in all honesty, is a very hard thing to pull off). The voice acting, as always, was superb and the bizarre events as they unfold makes you wonder what the hell is going to happen next? Along with the Beard style humour, I really enjoyed being carried along by the experience. You really do create really unique games and able to make believable worlds you can jump in and feel like you're part of.

As great as this is, there are a few things that could improve it. As you said, it is quite a big ask for a 20+ minute non-interactive story for a Jam. I did go through the whole thing, but I did feel it could've been shorter and still achieved the same feeling. I love the script writing, the environment and the ending was really cool (and unexpected), but I think it could've reached in perhaps half the time.

I did feel part way through, I really missed any VR interaction. As much as I enjoyed the story and presentation, I felt it lacked enough variation to hold my enjoyment for that length of time. I really wanted to somehow affect the outcome and/or interact with these characters in some way.

I'm pretty sure you had plans for such things, but yeah, Jam's time limits are hard to get everything in on time, so I get it...

All in all, I loved it - it was bizarre, unique, well scripted & acted and engaging. Excellent job Beard!

Thank you so much, 🙏. Happy you enjoyed it and grateful for your feedback.

Yes it ended up way too long. I was initially really trying to nail the likeness to the show, which has these long transitions with overhead shots and breathy noises. I got the resemblance I was after, but turns out those made the whole experience way too long for a VR experience with no interactivity, so for sure I'm with you there.

The main content to get cut was much more animation and contestant traversal during their lines. The traversal I got in there was super thrown in and herky jerky. I didn't get nearly the amount of animations I had actually collected and hoped to use. However I did not much plan for any VR style player interactivity. I wanted it to be a "show" like the show I'm parodying. Paired with the duration of the experience, that wasn't the best.

I'm in the middle of making a sort of HTML5 slideshow version so non-VR players can experience the meat of it without the too-long delays.

Thanks again for the thoughtful and valuable feedback about your experience. It means a lot to me.

When I clicked watch button, game stuck on black screen :/ I've tried it a few times, is there something I need to do?

Developer

It is loading quite a big forest scene then, but I tried to make it load in chunks to prevent problems. What hardware are you using?

Submitted

I am using quest 3, rtx 2060, i7, 32gb ram. I waited around 30 40 seconds

Developer

Ain't nothing wrong with that setup. Strange.

I solved the problem. After updating quest 3, your and Ian's games opened. It was a very different, immersive storytelling 🤯The character animations were very funny 😃

Dorian... SO GOOD, he should have won! That little jingle *Chefs Kiss*
I don't know how you write characters so well and their little uncanny valley walking around the scenes were great. I really enjoyed the night cam FX too! Maybe to give the player a little more freedom during the scenes, you could allow them to zoom or point at objects and get some information about the world or things in the world. The whole experience is quite long so maybe even a button to speed things up or something to do during the longer cutscenes. I was not expecting that ending!

Developer

Great idea! I know a 20 minute viewing experience for a game jam game is a big ask.  Yeah a lot of my scope creep hit the chopping block and then some. I really wanted more time to get the walking and more animations to sync up with the delivery, but I'm okay with how it turned out. Thanks for playing! Hoping to play most of all of the other entries today.

Yeah I was rooting for Dorian too!
