I get a sense of nostalgia listening to this track - it belongs in the games of my childhood! I think while there are so many things done well, I am quite impressed with your percussion composition, with particular emphasis on the fills, which (from experience) are not easy to do! Great work and thank you for sharing!

This song is so good, and for being made in such a short time it came out pretty nice.

Very lovely to listen to, great work!

Thank you!

Crazy that you made this in such a short time! Its really cute and sweet and I love those chords and instruments^^

Keep up the good work :)

Developer(+1)

thank you!

Speedrunning jams has become somewhat of a speciality for me so the extra short time limit on my side was just a requirement rather than a roadblock.

Beautiful! The reverb is great, and the vocal-like background synth also works wonders. It feels like the drum is a bit low-passed to make it less snappy, right? Wonderful choice! I like the call-and-response of the middle section as well - those high piano/celesta/whatever-it-is sounds really fit the theme. And I loved that you tried some creative choices. Not only with the three different sections flowing nicely into each other, but also with the chords I feel like. There is this one chord, playing e.g. at 0:25 and 1:03 which is almost definitely a minor chord yet feels so bittersweet! I so badly want to know your chord progressions!

Since I definitely remember your name, I went back to my iTunes playlist to remember some songs you made, and remembered your awesome songs like 'Gloo the Dragon' from Enemy Encounter Jam 2 and 'So you've been turned into a bubble' from the OST Composing Jam 7. I can also see that same creativity back into this song. Great to hear from you again :). Awesome song, can't wait to hear what you make next week!

thank you so much!

As soon as I get home I can look at the chord progression for you. I don’t remember it off the top of my head but I remember being quite happy with it.

You are right in that I had the drums with a low-pass filter to make them feel more spacey.

The instrument in the call and response section is just the vibes that play the chords but I think 2 octaves up (since I didn’t want to mix another instrument)

Thank you for enjoying my music! I’m excited to start creating more as soon as I get home!

OK now that I'm home I looked at the chord progression and I believe this is what it is. (there may be some incorrect info but I think it's mostly accurate)

CM - E7 - FM7 - em7 - FM - em - FM - G7 - am7 - em - FM7 - fm6 - GM - Bdim - Back to CM

I did the chords on ample guitar before I switched to vibes and ample guitar stumming shows what chord is being played but not the order but I think a lot of them are in first inversion.

The chord played at 0:25 and 1:03 is an a minor 7 chord without the 5th. so an A natural, C natural, and G natural. Ill send a picture of the chords too but its a little squashed.

Thank you so much for sharing your chord progression! I am always so intrigued by the songs I hear in these jams but never have a way of figuring out how they're made so I can learn from them. This progression is totally wild and I love it, I would never have figured this out myself. This really helps, thanks a lot! <3

Wow, I just noticed! I took a deep dive into your chord progression and stumbled upon something that might have been intentional or not:
Your progression strongly resembles the 'Descending Thirds Sequence' or 'D3(-4/+2)'!

Your first chords (C-E7-F7-e7-F-e-F-G7) strongly resembles that of the D3 (C-G-a-e-F-C-d-G7).
Most chords either agree or almost agree. For example, "E7" is the same as "G", except for an added note 'E'; "F7" is the same as "a" except for an added note 'F', etc. I thought I heard the smooth progression in your song, but I couldn't figure it out until I dove into your progression.

The last chords are intriguing as well. The chords (G7-a7-e-F7-f6-G-Bdim-C) can be divided into two parts: The part (G-a-e-F) again fits straight into the D3 progression shown above, and is thus composed of a step up ("G-a" and "e-F") and a fourth down ("a-e"). Normally, when you end on a "G7", it leads back to the "CM", but you go into a little deceptive cadence by going to "a7" instead (which still contains the full "CM" chord because it's a seventh chord)!
The last part, (f6-G-Bdim-C) is actually a simple (ii-V-I) progression, the classical authentic cadence! Namely, a "f6" is simply a "d" chord, or the "ii" (second) chord of the scale. You add a little "vii˚" chord in there, the Bdim, for flavor, but it functions identically to the "G" chord before.

So, in essence, you sprinkle a ton of variations of the beautiful 'Descending Thirds Sequence' in your song, giving that lovely vibe, and finish off with an authentic cadence. No wonder the chords sounded so beautiful :). Really, nicely done! It was fun to dissect your chord progression, thanks again for sharing it :D

I I hadn’t taken a music theory class last semester, I would have know. Like 30% of those words. But now I knew like 75% of them!

Awesome! I've also gotten a lot better at music theory the past years. If there's something you'd like me to explain, or you'd like to discuss some music theory, don't hesitate to reach out! :D

i loved it! the instrumentation is perfect<3 beautiful tack

Thanks! My favorite thing to add was the spacey organ at the end which I added because I thought the song needed a nice capper with a different instrument.

I don't know how you speedrun jams. The music is remarkable:

- perfectly in tune with the theme

- the harmonic progression is complex yet gives an impression of simplicity

- the melody is easy to hum and quickly gets into your head as if you already knew it

I really like the passages where the counterpoint responds to the main melody.

It's almost frustrating that there's only one loop.

Thank you so much!

with this one specifically, I had a chord progression in mind that i had tinkered with previously but never did anything with. Because of that, the hardest part being starting the song went smoothly since I already had an idea of what I wanted to do.

Melodies are the easy part to me. Once I have a chords and a baseline, I just listen to it on repeat and play different things until I find something I like. With this song, I didn’t really give myself time to decide what melodies I liked and just went with the first thing that sounded good.

This sounds like it belongs in the soundtrack of a cozy game. It's so soothing and pleasant, with starry instrumentation. I like that you went for a major III chord, giving us some notes and harmonies that go beyond the home scale, but making it feel totally natural. It hints at the harmonic world away from home but never goes there, keeping us safe and cozy in our home key just like we are safe and cozy in Star Town.

The extra spacey ending gives it extra compositional meat that makes me feel ready to listen to another loop of the song as I continue to do fetch quests in Star Town.

Developer(+1)

thank you so much! I don’t get how people can hear specific chords. It’s a skill I don’t possess and it’s so cool.

The ending is insanely good

Developer

thanks so much! I really wanted to use my organ VST since I felt a really textured part would sound cool and spacey. It took me a while to find a setting I liked.

It was also my first real time trying to have out of time notes with the high bits being recorded and left as is with my midi keyboard.

Literally perfect; gave me Omori ost vibes

Developer

I played Omori but honestly the only songs I remember are the battle themes in the space area and the casino area.

Either way, I appreciate the compliments! Thank you!
