How does the game fit the theme?
In Ratsacking, everything is a calculated risk, from the resource system to the stealth platforming - will you take the safe route and stealthily sneak around, or heist fast and loud, dodging bullets and traps in the process?

What code and assets did you not make from scratch during the jam (if any)?
I used some music assets from various places. Everything else was made from scratch

Loved the game!
It was simple yet addictive in the best way possible!
I just wish there was an explanation for what the luck upgrade was exactly doing, but other than that, I enjoyed my time.

pixel art looks good and the theme implementation is also nice!! But i think there could be an animation of rat's death

Nice visuals and fun gameplay!
We’d love it if you gave our project a try and a rating!

An awesome take on the theme. I loved the stealth/rushed aspect of it and the whole having to save food to feed my family or be greedy and get more upgrades. Really cool concept and the visuals were nice as well. If you guys ever decide to continue working on it, you could consider adding different rooms of the house and maybe some deadly obstacles that would get you to better rewards. Well done!

I can't believe how hungry my rat wife and kids are! Day 4 got so hard with the traps, but I think it was brilliant and just the escalation the game needed at that point. Really enjoyed the stealth eye and how it wasn't an instant fail. Dodging bullets was very fun and fed into the jam theme really well.  Great visuals across the board.

Thank you so much! I remember seeing your game on QC's stream, I'm flattered you think mine is even decent compared to yours!

I like the music and the art of the game. I also think you did well with the theme, risking it to get food and trying to make it back to your family!

Really enjoyable!!I played it for almost 30 mins without getting bored! Keep going!

This game is so well put together! It feels like a complete experience. I loved how the map was laid out, I just wish there were more of it to explore.
I did play through twice to see what happens if you take the bad route. Officer, I swear I was gonna feed them as soon as I was done maxxing out my stats...

Developer

Thank you for your comment! So glad you enjoyed the alternate ending, it was a blast to come up with. Secondary theme of this game for me was trying to get chuckles out of the player :P

I'll be sure to check your game out now!

This game was really cool! I thought the rat autopsy at the end was very funny. If I had to say one improvement, it would be to explain the controls a bit better, I was a little confused on what I was doing and how I was doing it at first!

Thank you for the kind words!

Love it. My family are greedy bastards tho.

Developer

They sure are hungry! Am still patiently waiting for someone to comment about what happens when you don't give into their greed, though...

the mouse traps just appearing on one day and not being told about them is some bad game design. but that is about the only bad thing I have to say. Very good game. Excellent.

(pro tip, max out luck on day one, don't feed your family, then have max stats on day 4 ahahaha)

Very cheesed to have played such a ratastic game.

Now, for a serious review…

It was an enjoyable experience, but it sadly got too repetitive fast. Area was too small, there wasn’t enough difference between the days. And sneaking was way too easy.

I also feel like traps had slightly too big interaction area, died by getting my poor whiskers caught.

The game over screen was absolute peak though, poor fella

I wish it was possible to skip the “moving to the table” cutscene, I feel like I spent more time watching it than playing the game.

Developer(+1)

Thanks for your feedback!

I've tightened up the hitboxes on the traps a bit - I think they were a bit too unforgiving for sure :)

As mentioned in another reply, I definitely understand the repetition issue - We wanted to design a level with a small enough scope so that we could detail it accurately to fit the vibe, but unfortunately I think the gameplay space ended up a touch smaller than I would've liked.  I've also sped up the cutscene, so hopefully it doesn't feel like a slog.

Thank you for playing!

Oh wow, I love that I get to play as a mouse.

I really like the mechanic where if you get extra, you get to upgrade your stats.

I wish there were tooltips to explain what Luck is. Speed is obvious. Stealth is kinda okay but still not really clear what it does when I first see it. Luck is unknown. I would prefer to know what they do before I distribute my points!

Also I spent all my points on the first day and didn't feed my family, I don't know what consequences there are if I click 'No'.

The autopsy page was super funny!!! However, I do wish it was clear that I could continue after dying from that. It's a one shot kill and I thought it forces you to restart from Day 1. I almost quit because when you send a player to the menu it usually means the game is over or something, especially in short game jams like these. Thankfully I didn't have to restart but maybe just letting me continue straight away instead of booting me to the menu would have also helped create a super gaming experience for the player and a nicer 'flow'.

It does get a little repetitive after maybe Day 5 as you tend to know the layout of the map which doesn't change and the food locations also roughly get memorized. Still, I liked the addition of mouse traps that broke the monotony midway. So it was just doing the same thing every day and watching the same cutscene.

Still, I managed to reach the end of the game and it was a very wholesome experience that I got to feed my family. :D

Also dang! This family is a really hungry one!

To also conclude, I like the music and overall vibe. The art is also pleasant with a nice color palette. Animating the days increasing is also a nice touch. Good job!

Developer(+2)

Wow! Thank you for all your feedback!

Honesty time:

The 'continue after dying' thing is a bug - forgot to have the game reset variables upon starting again! Fixed now, thank you!

Tooltips are a good idea. Luck increases the odds of food spawning - higher luck means more likelihood of a treasure trove of food.

You are right about repetition; I hoped the mouse traps would help that, but we designed a level small enough that we could accurately detail it in the time period of the jam. If I could go back, I'd give the map some more variation, or perhaps more verticality.

Thank you so much again! I'll check your game out now :)

Honestly i think it was good that it didnt reset. Getting killed by the trap is almost certainly what every player would run into the first time they load the level as there isnt a warning nor does it look deadly enough till you get caught in it.

I might not haven given the game another go if I had to restart as it takes a bit of repetition to then get back to the same stage, but it is your game so I leave it up to you! Just offering my thoughts :)

Developer(+1)

As someone else stated, they felt there should have been a warning once the traps were implemented - I intended to have one, but totally forgot as the mouse traps were a very late stage addition. I've added a little warning going into Day 4, along with a few bug fixes.
