so i have encountered a slight problem couple of days ago.

I have made a post about how hard it is to get ratings as a team who develops in unreal engine or any other projects that require downloads.

It's sometimes feel a bit unfair how many ratings browser games get vs great downloadable games that struggle to get above 10 ratings.. and of course you could say "then just make a browser game". But unfortunately not all of us have the option to do so, duo to the engine we use or the nature of our game. And game jams should be the places to experiment and get better. And not just to make browser games.

But anyway that's not the point, the goal of my last post was "download for download", to help all the great downloadable games that struggle to get ratings.

But what was the problem with it? More then half of the people who replied just advertised their 60+ ratings browser games without even bothering to rate our downloadable game and without reading the actual topic of the post.

They just saw a successful post so they came to ride along it with their already successful games, while our game and many other downloadable games still struggle to get ratings..

So please, if you actually read this post and you have a bit of time... try to give some attention and support to downloadable games, give all those great developers the chance they deserve and don't let the download button scare you away.

And if you have a downloadable game please post it here and we will rate it.

and of course our team will be greatful if anyone who got here will give a try to our game as well and help us for the first time to reach 20 ratings.

Thank you for giving your time and reading this long post

Yeah, its kinda sad how some games don't stand a chance because they are not browser games. We are having this issue ourselves so thank you for putting this post!

Here is our game, we hope that more teams post their game here so we can rank it too!

downloaded, rated, and commented on your game!

Thank you for giving this post attention <3

then learn how to build a webgl with unreal engine , it's a gamejam and there some hidden rules we can't do much about

Submitted

If you will do a bit of research you will see there is no option to export browser games from modern unreal engine.

no HTML and no Webgl support. The only option it to pay a subscription service to stream your game in the web. Which is not really an option for most people.

That's a good point. Some games are simply hard to run in a browser or might lag.

We'd really appreciate it if you could check out and rate our game too:

I have tried your game now and I was really impressed! Definitely worth being a downloadable game!

Very Good job! I rated and commented. Happy to give you your 20th rating haha

It is a shame, but the nature of how safe and convenient browser games are will always make them preferred. For those who are scared of malicious activity from downloads, I'd strongly recommend using Windows Sandbox (free and easy). Simply hit the windows key, type in "add windows features" and find windows sandbox, restart your pc and then you can search and open the windows sandbox like any other app. Once opened, download and browse within the sandbox app and any potentially infected files are removed when the sandbox is closed. It's what l use when downloading files from here. Mac and Linux may have their own sandboxes built in, but if not you can download a free sandbox program or virtual machine like VMware. This is my first game jam so I'm not familiar with jams in general, but I'd assume going to a less beginner jam would get you more downloads. I'll check out your game and rate it when I'm back at my pc.

thank you! And windows sandbox is indeed a great idea that I didn't think about. So I'm really happy you brought it up

This is great advice! :)

Unfortunately malware is something that can happen in a jam as it's a perfect scenario for any malicious actor that wants to spread their malware. Thanks for sharing this!

by the way, Also all the browser Game developers here in the jam are amazing! Saw some amazing browser Games. But yeah just trying to help fellow Jamers that have the same problem as our team to get ratings only because of the fact the game need to be downloaded

Submitted

Yeah, our game wasn't able to be built for browser because the shaders didn't work. We've struggled to get above 20 ratings, and we really feel the effect of not making our game browser-friendly. Thank you for this post!

I have been sharing this sentiment too. I’ll check out your game when I get home! For mine, I did make a web build, but it’s not as good as the executable— I’d hope to get rated based on the downloadable. /jam/brackeys-14/rate/3850839

My game is browser only, but I haven’t encountered that problem in my topic on rating Windows builds: /jam/brackeys-14/topic/5272019/i-will-give-feedback-to-windows-builds-d

I understand the sentiment, we could've been in the same boat but luckily managed to fix our broken web build before the 48h windows closed. In the beginning the download button scared me away as well but after playing a few downloadable games I quickyl learned it's only a few clicks more and the local game do tend to run better than the web versions.

Anyway, played, rated and commented on your game. :) Good luck!

This is my downloadable game https://redrobot.itch.io/risky-b15-kt

I would love to get some more feedback for it. I haven't given it much thought before publishing, but it does seem like it being only availably as a download for windows is a reason for why it didn't get as much attention, so I'm especially thankful to everyone who checks it out regardless.

I'll rate yours as well.

rated and gave some feedback about your game :)

I've actually played a good bit of downloadable games, and like you said, they tend to be low on ratings, however I find downloadable games to be generally more enjoyable, as they tend to be longer and feel better.

I've seen a lot of people in this jam post their Unreal games, and a VERY big problem is that these games are absolutely massive (normally over 300mb) regardless of how much content is in the game.

Most of these giant file sizes come from the unnecessary plugins and extra stuff that Unreal packages into your game, and it's definitely worth it to find all of these and clean them up.

Default Unreal settings also don't compress your assets enough, so you might want to get some asset cleaner to help you with that.

Of course, people can still download your game regardless of the file size, but taking upwards of 5 minutes in downloading just to be able to play your game(mainly for people with worse internet) leaves a bad taste in people's mouth.

This is by far the main problem with downloadable games, and very important to keep in mind for future game jams.

Edit: This may not be just a problem in Unreal games and more obvious in all 3D games in general. Cutting down file sizes is still possible though.

Yeah, I have been getting the same problem too, where people advertise their game without bothering to rate my game. I use Godot 4, but the problem is that they don't support HTML if you code in C#, which I do. My game is Biscuit Alert, but I will play your game first, though it might take a little while before I do so. Thank you for doing this and for clarifying!

I just played, rated, and commented on your game. It was really cute and fun. Well done!

Please rate and review my game at /jam/brackeys-14/rate/3851282. Please give an honest review for my game. This will help me improve and develop it better.

Some types of downloadable game.exe may have their own niche, so don't be discouraged :)

The saddest part is, my game could've easily been a browser game. I just didn't think of it at the time.

UE5 dev here too, 100% agree with your post. Next time I'll make a game for game jam on UE4.27, the latest version that supports WebGL.

Commented and rated, here is mine downloadable game, mouse maze in 3d with manipulation of perspective and movement across complex surfaces. have fun :) /jam/brackeys-14/rate/3837870
