Description
Reflections
My entry for the OST Composing Jam #8! I used the image by @xin_cere.art and phrase "One Summer Night" for inspiration.
The soundtrack:
The 3 tracks I composed for this jam represent a snapshot sampler of what a full OST could look like.
The first track is a piano and strings duet, while the remaining tracks trend more electronic.
The "game":
Reflections is an RPG where you play as someone who is reflecting on life after the loss of their father, on one summer night.
The game takes place entirely in the mind of the player character, who is working through the grief by imagining a world of what ifs from memories of their father. Things they could have done differently or wished they had time to do more.
Throughout the game, you battle negative thoughts, sad memories, awkward moments, and your past selves in order to grow and overcome your feelings to reach internal peace.
The music itself:
Here are a few tracks I composed to give some idea about the audio direction.
Bass guitar is featured on many of the tracks because the player's Dad was a professional bassist.
Reflections (Main Theme):
The opening theme of the game, which plays on the main menu. I wanted to compose something atmospheric and emotionally charged, so the track starts off with an enveloping string section. The piano follows shortly after and takes the lead position.
This track represents the players mental state at the beginning of the game, shortly after the death of their father. Sad in the beginning, but with uncertain hope at the end.
Carry On! (Battle Theme):
In Reflections, the player encounters many self imposed roadblocks. The manifestation of negative emotions form the basis for enemies.
This track is more electronic and psychedelic. It represents the player's frantic internal monologue.
This track samples the main theme!
Guilty Catharsis (Boss Theme):
This track plays when fighting one of the four main bosses, who are corrupted memories of the player's father.
There are multiple conflicting drum parts in this track , consisting of both live drums and electronic. These represent the player starting to recognize the corrupted memory as the original memory it was.
Message from the artist
Thank you so much for listening to my OST submission! Please feel free to leave a rating.
Looking forward to checking out your submissions!
Theme

How does it fit the theme?
The game is about a player going through loss one summer night. The colors of the sky in the picture represent the different emotion of loss embodied in the OST. The individual standing on the pier inspired the reflective nature of the game.

Hey, this is a great snapshot of what your OST could be. I like how you went for a unique sound through that mix of instruments, especially with the electric bass that ties into the meaning of your game. It feels explosive and full of character. Really cool work!
I love it! its very emotional and has beautiful sounds. I would have liked the voice leading to be a bit smoother, but aside from that, excellent composition!
i like the interesting mix of fruitger aero aesthetic and metal adjacent breakcore in this, really cool vibe! I especially liked the last track, well done!
Good submission, I liked Carry On the most!
Really glad the OST went for a more unique style after the first song which kept me engaged.
also, in the description, you wrote, "This track represents the players mental state at the beginning of the game, shortly after the death of their father. Sad in the beginning, but with uncertain hope at the end."
but the line ended at the word "sad" for me before going to the next line to finish.
I read it as if you were saying the word Sad as like a punctuation. A silly example being,
"I missed the ice cream truck. Sad."
I just thought it was funny.
Haha that is a funny thought.
One of the most unique submissions I’ve heard this jam. The main theme feels so heartfelt and sincere, it reminded me of Angelo Badalamenti’s music. I like how the tracks flow into each other, from orchestral to funk to almost something shoegazey.
The only thing I’d suggest that might help from a mixing standpoint is to inject a bit more high frequencies into the main theme (from 8 khz upwards) – this could help the mix breathe a bit. But that’s of course very subjective, like most things in music.
Really impressive work!
Thanks! I will have to check out Angelo Badalamenti.
Great one ! Carry On sounds a bit like a Daft Punk track, my favorite of the soundtrack I think, well done !
Thanks! Daft Punk is definitely an influence of mine in general.
One of my favorite so far, really great vibe, melodies are simple but powerful, there is some cool chords too !
Thank you!
Well done! The emotion really comes through in the track Reflections, gave me chills! I can the see the vision you're going for and I like the direction its heading.
Thank you! I'm happy the emotion came across .
Really cool and well-executed concept. Great chords in the first track! I love the idea of featuring the bass guitar to intertwine the music and story but I feel like that idea could've been communicated more effectively if there was bass guitar featured prominently in the main theme. Good work overall!
Thanks! I agree with you about featuring the bass more prominently in the main theme. I had a similar thought but didn't execute it in time unfortunately.
I think I will try another version of the track with bass later on and see how it goes!
