much more lore detail on the project page, there's a lot of text but maybe you'd wanna check it out for some reason
------------------------------------------------------------------------------

(tl;dr: sci-fi city, in one summer night (say that again) 12 years ago everyone got trapped inside with no hope of escaping, "Avengers assemble" ahh superhero team, interdimensional threats, both mcs are members of the team, 2 powerful bad guys are released from the prison, mcs go to capture the first one, get flashbacks, reach the guy, get beaten up, return, split up, mc2 beats the second bad guy who made her the way she is, he escapes, mc1 gets to the first one who gets a powerup, mc1 almost gets killed but realizes he has a soul, goes super saiy- (GET OUT) and makes a final stand filled with DETERM-... MOTIV-... Whatever. Almost gets killed, gets saved by a strong woman that thinks the bad guy isn't the bad guy, he's like "no" and escapes too, then both mcs realize that suffering made them stronger and the BIG BOSS appears in the end of the epilogue playing chess, the end :3)

The story takes place in a technologically thriving city Corpeole, which, as if in exchange for its immense progress, is isolated with its surroundings from the rest of existence by the Barrier that appeared here precisely 12 years before the game's events in one night, which seemed like hell on earth.
The Barrier seems to completely defy laws of physics, logic and concepts themselves, letting anything go inside, but not letting anything escape once entered, and, due to instability of space-time inside interdimensional ripples and rifts persistently occur and entities from all across the multiverse can go right inside, most of them not being quite friendly or even sentient, but with powers beyond humans' comprehension.

Thus, the Battle Forces Termination Team was formed as a special military group to deal with any incoming threat to the population of Corpeole and the Barrier. It was formed by Naile Baskez - an outstanding engineer and a former leading Kwantim co. researcher who left Kwantim co. not long after the Barrier appeared.

Kwantim corporation is a frontier research company specialized in quantum and astrophysics that, after the creation of the Barrier, also became a haven and a helping foundation for those who recently got trapped in this hell, for which its founder and CEO, Joey Kwantim, was praised as a savior and a philanthropist, many even idolized him.

B.F.T.T. currently consists of 5 members:
1. Naile Baskez himself being the leader of the team and the main coordinator, being a cyborg with less than a third of his human body left. Quite weak, not having any amount of eargon as an energy source and instead using multiple fusion reactors, making him a bit stronger than the weakest eargon user. Des not usually participate in battles
2. M-47 - a ridiculously powerful battle robot with advanced artificial intelligence and sentience, being originally a creation of a quite questionable military group, but breaking free from their control, being also one of the two main heroes and playable characters in the game, being one of the two main units in the duo who deal with most of the problems, most of his powers coming from a large eargon crystal being his energy source for many years
3. Clara - a mutant anthropomorphic sentient cat, who was made that way due to one of Kwantim co. experiments with eargon, the weakest eargon user so far, but arguably the most effective member on the team, using her savvy and tricks to deal with foes much stronger than herself, being the second one of the main heroes and playable characters. Works in duo with M-47, doing the most of the dirty work, also is the team's hacker and programmer.
4. Rosette - a woman from another dimension, her race and origin unknown, has a cybernetic hand being a vessel for some unknown liquid. Teams engineer, doesn't fight at all and rarely goes out of her workshop in general.
5. Angel Stars - a cosmo-angel from another dimension, presumably the same one Rosette is from. She was exiled in this dimension by her own dying race a long time ago, becoming a protector of humans and getting acquainted with Naile even before the Barrier was created. The strongest member of the team, and one of the strongest characters in the whole story. A declared mayor of Corpeole, has no time for smaller missions and usually joins only in emergency situations.

The first act of the game ends with M-47 defeating M-28 "Dark", being his predecessor, who despises humans for their nature, but before he could capture him, Dark hacks into Corpeole's high-security prison specialized for containing immensely powerful entities and releases two of the most dangerous prisoners he could find, who both have been in stasis here for 10 years, those being:
1. Dell Anguria, "The Warper", a genius engineer and physicist, the former best researcher in Kwantim co., who with his exoskeleton suit "attraction-2" can widely manipulate gravity and space-time itself, and was imprisoned for attempted attack and almost successful murder of Joey Kwantim and mass destruction during their fight.
2. Hank Gozro, "The Hadron Samurai", an outstanding former Kwantim co. engineer and robo-technician, with his suit able to manipulate nuclear forces and matter, was imprisoned for terrorism, considered the most dangerous terrorist alive.

Eargon is a mysterious element found in a dead universe, that possesses bizarre attributes and contains so much concentrated energy in such a little volume it breaks the laws of physics entirely. If used as an energy source, it produces so much energy that a gram of it would be more than enough to power the whole planet for 50 years.

If a live being makes direct contact with eargon, in 99,69% of cases it instantly dies or at least gets heavily injured. In other cases, however, because of unknown circumstances the crystallic element "merges" with the being, giving it immense and unique powers, amplifying its original energetic potential for hundreds or even thousands of times.
Some eargon users merge with the said crystal so much they unlock the enhanced state of their connection to eargon - Battle Mode, GREATLY amplifying their powers and gaining new abilities related to their powers.

Thus, the second act begins with Naile organizing a meeting of the whole team and giving the intel on the situation. M-47 and Clara are dispatched to the said coordinates to find Warper's facility and capture him dead or alive to then go for the Samurai.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
MEANING OF THE TRACKS
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
1. That Fateful Night - M-47 and Clara fight through the security systems of Warper's facility, these old drone models and corridors left unchanged for 10 years remind them of that calm summer night before the Barrier appeared and as they go deeper, it seems like they are travelling into the past, as if foreshadowing Warper's goal, approaching his control room. (where will be the first encounter with the Warper, for which there's no theme bc I've already made it before the jam :< )

After suffering an utter defeat from Warper, realizing he is far beyond anything they two have faced before, but managing to escape alive as if Dell wanted them to, especially M-47, they decide to split up. Clara goes her way to capture Hank and M-47 goes his way to find more information about Dell, only to be interrupted by an urgent emergency in a Kwantim co. eargon power plant.

2. Hadron Samurai - at last Clara meets the Hadron Samurai in a dojo-styled arena inside a terrorist base. One look at his face with a little stubble and those glasses make her memories of when she was just a stray cat overflow her mind, as she remembers that Hank was the one who made her what she is now. He speaks to her like a long lost father, inviting her to join him in his rising empire where everyone would do their part to make Corpeole heaven instead of hell. However, she hates what she has become because of him and gets mad at his reasoning, thus the fight starts, that ends with Clara winning, but before she could capture the terrorist, she gets distracted by rubble falling on her because of... Angel. She is fighting someone Clara can't recognize from that distance, while Hank manages to escape.

3. Overcharge - emergency alarm yowls uncannily as M-47 busts into the reactor chamber and finds Warper, the miniature Kwantim co. reactor already in his hand, as if he was waiting for M-47 to show up, meeting him calmly and coldly as always. M tries to stop him, but he is too late. Dell inserts the reactor in his suit's chest sector, where his eargon crystal is located, and his energy starts rising exponentially. M-47 gets trapped with Dell inside Event Horizon - one of his ultimate moves, a large, approximately 10-meter radius black hole, that caused the whole city to shift gravity towards it.

While Angel and Naile, as well as some other lone heroes were busy saving the citizens, M-47, frozen in space inside of the black hole and slowly stretching to a straight line, thought about something. On what level a consciousness must be to have real emotions and a soul? That is when he remembered that hellish night precisely 12 years ago. When he saw what crawled out of rifts as the Barrier formed, emotions stopped being an imitation, artificial intelligence stopped being artificial. Real dread, pity and despair filled his mind, just like they filled it now, when he is at the brink of inevitable death.

As the life he just realized he has was about to be taken from him, he felt eargon resonate with something in his chest. Not with his body, but with something deeper. His body immediately regenerated in a bright flash and transformed entirely into a more humanoid shape as he entered his newly acquired Battle Mode and surpassed the gravitational pressure of the black hole, only to find himself in space - the black hole, being so small outside, inside was the size of the Universe itself, with its own stars and planets.

And before the robot was the man... No, the entity, who was far beyond even M-47's new form, staring at him calmly yet seriously as always, as if he was expecting M-47 to unlock his powers from the beginning, only now a smile of excitement giving off his emotions he is always hiding. M-47 knew he couldn't beat him, but he needed to do all he can to hold his ground, giving up was not an option.

When he was at his limit, rescue has finally come - Angel Stars appeared, shattering the fabric of space-time itself, the whole inner Universe of Event Horizon shifting towards her. With a single punch she damaged the Kwantim co. reactor on Warper's chest so much he couldn't maintain Event Horizon, so it collapsed and exploded, releasing the robot. Angel and Dell seemed to be actually acquainted with each other, as she stated she doesn't want to fight him, but she can't let him go either. A short one-sided battle begins, where Dell is losing, while Angel tries to convince him to give up himself and that it's not too late to change everything. Remorse and grief noticeably strike him, but his only dark answer to her was that it was too late from the very start, after that he barely manages to escape through a wormhole. (actually it's a full remake of my old track btw)

4. At Last - The dawn is here. That 12-year anniversary night of suffering is over and Clara lays on the grass, staring at the pink sky slightly distorted by the Barrier. She thinks about that night 12 years ago and what she has today and says that being a freak of nature isn't such a bad thing when because of that you've got such great friends, smiling at M-47 and silently forgiving Hank, who in the meantime walks in the crowd of the streets, overthinking his ideas. M-47, although not being able to smile without an actual face, speaks warmly, agreeing with Clara's words and thinking about how that suffering he had to overcome made him not only strong, but alive.
Meanwhile Dell returns to his facility, beaten up, but determined. He knows they now know his location and his vengeance, still fresh in his mind from 10 years of sleep cannot wait longer. He seems hesitant, but clears it off in front of the mirror. In the top floor of Kwantim co. tower, Joey Kwantim was sitting in his office, playing chess with himself. He was calmly and joyfully humming a melody, saying to himself "Hank is out of commission, then... What will be your next move, huh, Dell?" and places a knight forward.

this shit is so turnt...

the production on this one is outstanding!!

i haven't read the story yet but, with the soundtrack alone, it already tells a story to me (i'll read it eventually, it's a little too long but i don't wanna resort to the tldr 😭😭)

Submitted(+1)

We love us some physics equations in the track art, lolz outstanding.

Gave this high marks all over the place, it's exquisitely produced and every track has real distinct heart and character to it.  And just tons of work into the game concept too.  No way could I have done something like that juggling my day job at the same time (at least not fast enough for the jam timeframe).

Very, very pleased with it.

Gave you an itch follow, if you like the thing(s) on my page(s), consider doing the same.

Cheers!

this is quite the wall of text for getting your vision thru and I‘m not really sure if it should becount as a pro or con. But then also you are trying to tie this to another project of yours so it is kind of understandable.

Musically this is very over the top (in a positive way) with los of energy but also calmer moments to let those freaky parts shine even more. Every song had their own unique identity with the overarching style feeling very cohesive.

My only gripe here would be production wise. While your songs sprout with energy the energy doesn’t really get thru but feels a bit flat. Most likely this will have to do with your mastering compressing WAY to hard or you Limiter crushing to much. Either way it feels like the dynamics of the song and also the instruments are getting lost. Also a point of compression/limiting is that transients are also very crushed and don’t feel pumping. This could be due to the compressors/limiters attack being to fast, so it crushes the beginning of the transients way to early.

I think getting a rerun on your master would provide you with a much nicer result, since the music has quite the energetic delivery. Also a general tip for mastering is to automate your master volume fader and also stereo enhancer, to emphasize climaxes a bit more. A change of 1db might not sound much but will definitely feel more energetic. This is normally a trick on pop/rock production where the chorus/hook gets boosted by a bit, but this does also do wonders in those kind of music.

Developer (2 edits) (+1)

thanks for so much detail in your criticism! Yeah my whole mastering was just frequency division and maximus compressors with different presets on some inserts and master. I'll try to also play around with gain in chorus parts as you recommended in later tracks, I just wish I'd be able to figure everything out with that thing. Also about text, I'll definitely make it more compact tomorrow, but rn I'm just falling asleep as I type so gn and thanks again!!

P.S. about compressing or limiting too much, I don't think that's the case in my recent tracks anymore since without limiter and compressor they still almost don't reach the 0dB limit throughout the track.

Submitted(+1)

well it depends a bit. While compression and limiting are technically the same thing, they do get used differently. Compressing a signal means you add volume while compressing the dynamics over a certain threshold. So for example everything other 36 db gets compressed by a ratio of 1:4 meaning for every 4db over the threshold of 36db it only gets 1db louder (so for example instead of 40db it will be 37db).

Limiting is making something quittier over a certain threshold so it won’t get as loud. While brickwall limiting says it can‘t get louder.

So compression does not really have to do with the target db of your output. Generally a glue compressor should only compress the siglnal between 1-4 db. If you need higher compression, I’d recommend using a compressor in parallel, like an affect bus before the master. Just question every track into this, except the percussions and drums and squash that thing as hard you like. Then dial in the volume of that effect bus to taste. This will get you more punch and dynamic while also giving you that squeezed sound.

Developer

OHH WAIT
So basically you mean that the compression should be on a separate input and drums and percussion shouldn't be compressed and only side chained on master and the rest can be compressed as much as I want? Also about limiting and compression, that's really some new info. I've had an idea that compression amplifies the volume to a certain point, but not how it deals with limiting it.

Submitted(+1)

It depends. Most of the time you'll most likely use a light comporessor in the master chain as a glue effect. So in this case the comporession should be low.

The other thing mentioned is a technic by Andrew Shoeps. There you would use a heavy compressing comporessor as a seperat bus befor the master chain (or as a side chain) without the drums, yes.

Submitted(+1)

WOW that's a lot of text! I read through it but to be honest it kind of went in my eyes and not my brain I basically forgot everything as soon as I read it. Apologies...

The OST is really good though! High energy and electric! A really fun listen!

Developer (2 edits)

thanks man! Yeah sorry for the LONG text, it looked better in my head... Idk how to make it more compact, mb will come up with something tomorrow bc I'm tired as hell

also check the tldr in the beginning then, it makes a very short summary of everything

Submitted(+1)

super cool soundtrack! really worked well with the energy of the tracks and the story was represented really well

Developer

thanks!! I might need to make the text more compact though...

Submitted(+1)

I loved your proposal! Super powerful instrumentation.

Submitted(+1)

Very great soundtrack, with a lot of though and work put into it !

I really liked the intensity of the instruments and arrangements you've used throughout, it really did a lot for the theming of your game. Among the tracks, Overcharge was really nice with its many variations and high-adrenaline energy, and At Last provided a nice breathing room after all of the intensity of the previous track.

I quite liked the thought you put into your worldbuilding on your page and it's really well done, however I must say that reading through your descriptions and listening to your music at the same time was almost impossible, due to how busy and intense the tracks were and how compact and blocky the descriptions were.
This is not a problem at all since I read back the description after finishing your album, but maybe some shorter sentences and a lot more line breaks could help with the readability of your synopsis (because I felt that it has a lot to offer with the illustrations that are also very nice, you can compliment your friend for them) ?

Anyway very great experience, I enjoyed a lot being immerged into your worldbuilding along with the great music/story/illustrations to represent them, so well done !

Developer(+1)

thank you very much bro! I'll try to make the text more compact, bc the tldr section just doesn't really provide enough info, so the long version needs to be patched instead.

Submitted(+1)

The lore is a bit text heavy, but it's really expressed through the music.

I'm a bit biased because I adore this style, but I enjoyed these track really nicely! The production is really nice and the sound design is well made aswell!

Developer (1 edit)

thanks!! Also yeah about the lore I probably should add a tldr in commas in the start...

Submitted(+1)

Loved bass synth in Hadron Samurai

Developer(+1)

thanks bro! Originally I was going to use a whole different synth for that, but then stopped on this

Submitted(+2)

This is really cool! I especially loved how there were different phases of the battle themes was a super nice touch and made a huge impact in my visualization of this OST in a game context. Very good work, and good luck with the game!

Developer(+1)

thanks bro! Yeah when making music I have to form a clear picture of what happens here first, that's why on the project page there's so much of tl;dr bs, but I guess it has a bright side bc it makes the music resemble the events more clearly

Submitted(+2)

Awesome stuff! High pace, action, with hints towards something darker underneath, everything just fits together perfectly! The instrumentation is great and works really well with the setting, and sound design is great and very fun to listen to and complements the tracks! Also really liked that you made different parts for different sections in each track, super cool!

My favorite was "Overcharge", really liked the instrumentation towards the end, gave it a very grand feel which works well with a boss battle!

Great job!

Developer (1 edit) (+2)

thank you man! Yeah I prefer sticking to this synthy intense mood with B.F.T.T. bc of the sci-fi setting and the dark and tragic mood of the whole story in general. As for Overcharge, it's meant to be one of if not the most intense track in the whole game (4 acts in total) not only bc one of the strongest god-like characters in the story was going nearly full out, but bc I wanted to fully show M-47's desperate struggle for his newly obtained life, the soul he just realized he has that is about to get ripped away from him

Submitted(+2)

Holy your action writing is amazing! I was like okay At Last I'm liking this subtle atmosphere- WTF. So solid action writing for those 3 and blend with electronics and strings, I think it's octatonic or something? The scale works really nicely over it. Great job! Really nice art too :)

Developer(+2)

thanks bro! I'm just usually finding many battle themes in media just not intense/emotional enough to convey the emotions of characters, their powers and the situation itself in it. And this was inspired a bit by devil may cry and ultrakill ost, as well as some other games and media.

Submitted(+2)

Awesome! Yeaaa I actually feel that, boss sometimes can be slower. I actually was looking for film action thriller or car chase for a recent boss project. DMC iirc had some cool use of rock for its stuff, so yea feels some innovative territory happening here

Submitted(+2)

Love the intensity!

Submitted (1 edit) (+1)

got to listen to it before anybody else. Can asure-you it's peak
