Description
Summer's Last Night - "It was an uneventful summer vacation, but it became the best one you'd ever have, when you made a friend on the last night."

Same Place, Years Later - "Years have passed, there's nothing left for you here - you won't find what you're looking for. But maybe... maybe memories will suffice..."

Hey, thanks for listening!

Straight away, when I looked at both the theme and picture theme, I heard in my head a part of "Same Place, Years Later". Unfortunately for me I never made anything close to this style/genre nor do I really listen to it, so most things I did are what I imagine would sound good! Either way I participate in these Jams to try out new things and improve my writing, so I was happy to take on this challenge!

I see these tracks being played on a story driven game where the main character meets a person (in this case I was inspired by the girl on the picture theme) on the last night of a boring summer vacation. They become friends, but their time is cut short and they part ways - I tried capturing this on the first track, making a "feel good" progression and carefree female vocals/melody (again, inspired by the girl on the picture theme).
Then years later the main character remembers that summer night and how it marked their life, and, hoping that they could relive that moment and meet that person again, they decide to go back to that place. As expected no one is there and a bittersweet feeling washes over the main character, while they reminisce on the memories made there - I tried doing this on the second track, by going heavy on the melancholic feel, in both progression and melodies.

Overall, I'm pretty happy with the results, and enjoyed trying new techniques to make this, although I struggled with mixing a bit, so if anyone has any tips for mixing these types of tracks (and tips for this style in general!) that'd be great!

All vocal performances were made with Synthesizer V!

Pretty nice tracks, very soothing and nostalgic I enjoyed them very much !

The bass and drums groove with on top this very pretty vocal synth has a great mood to it, I certainly wouldn't mind listening to a full album in this style.
Summer's Last Night feels very nostalgic, Same Place, Years Later has that bittersweet ending credit style to it that brings a great sense of closure to the album, and to the reminiscences of the protagonist going back to this place she had fond memories of, it works very nicely so great job !

Post Rock is a genius move and when the guitars come in I'm like 'oh shid, I'm in this'. Vocals totally elevated it too. Great work!

This is beautiful! Really loved the overall atmosphere, and the dialogue you provided in the description fit really well with the tracks. As everyone else is saying the vocals were fantastic, Synthesizer V sounds so good! I really need to switch over from Vocaloid... Anyway, great job, and thanks for sharing!

The vocals are the best part. they sound excellent and are the highlights of both tracks.

They make the OST feel so much more personal and alive.

I found these really evocative, Summer's Last Night has a real contentment to it, tempered by this fleeting feeling. The bittersweet inevitability of good thing needing to end.

Then of course, the less bittersweet feeling that yup, they still ended. No matter what we might hope.

Other folks have talked about the mix already but to me, the blurry warm vibe of a low heavy mix doesn't detract too much. Feels appropriately hazy.

(Also yeah, dang that's a really neat vocal synth and it's put to very good use)

What a pleasant listen! Loved the vocals, they fit in very nicely. You did a great job with a genre of music you were not experienced in making. The only thing I’ll say that the mix is a little muddy. Cutting the lows on the non-bass instruments would help clear out the clutter. Nice work!

The dreamy distortion and oscillating intervals is a great opening on Summer’s Last Night. The production is excellent, and I love how tight the rhythm section is. You perfectly capture that feel good mood with a tinge of nostalgia. Those ethereal, entrancing vocals float languidly above the other instruments, and that second vocal line is melting my soul. I really love this track.

You do such a good job creating that feeling of bittersweet in Same Place, Years Later. Again, those sighing vocals, they are a hug and a heartbreak at the same time, so good. Your concept is so relatable too. When I listen to your track, a flood of memories flutter through me,  inviting me to linger with them for a while. 

I thoroughly enjoyed listening to your music.

Summer's Last Night has a really evocative intro; I love the fuzz / dist you've applied to those guitars and just how lush those chords are there. The chord progression here reminds me of The Cranberries' Dreams, which was the theme song of the show Derry Girls. I think something more could be done mixing wise / dynamics wise to really convey the magic of meeting a friend, sharing your hopes and dreams with them on that one magical summer night. Because right now, as it stands, it roughly stays at the same loudness before it cuts off for the reasons you described in the text.

Same Place, Years Later has me looking down into the waters around the pier in the intro; it has that kind of wet feel. This one is a lot more dynamic and expressive than the previous track, for the simple reason that a buildup has happened before the drums kicked in. It just stays where it does, though, without either growing louder or suddenly getting softer (to communicate something more intimate). Cues like these could actually communicate different things to us. What's happening in the reminiscing scene? I'm pretty sure that it's not just a static feeling of memories. Emotions wash over us, they come and go, and music can reflect that really well depending on the tropes we use to communicate that with others.

Good OST -- think upon more dynamics use and how that can communicate different things to the listener at different points of your songs.

Yeah, I also felt these became static pretty fast, but I think since I didn't leave myself a lot of room mix wise I was a bit worried of breaking the mix, as I'm not very good at mixing! Also since I'm not that knowledgeable with this style of music I wasn't really sure how to create more dynamics without sounding too forced. The intro for "Same Place, Years Later" was the last thing I did for the reasons you described, to create a build up to help with the "staticness" of the track, but even then I wasn't sure if using synths like that worked well with this style!

Oh wow, I completely feel The Cranberries vibes now you say it. Can't quite put it into words but the like.. juxtaposition maybe of the distorted low end and the peak through of the bright top end of the chords maybe?

Something like that; there's also the timing, instrumentation, and tonality that reminded me of it in parts. Fr fr i would love a Cranberries-esque OST so long as what's inside the game fits 🙌🏽

Nostalgic, soothing and dreamy. I especially liked Summer's Last Night. At first I got smashing pumpkins vibes, then when the vocals came in it had more of  a shoegaze feel, which I love. Definitely a nice fit for the picture too!

Ah, so it IS shoegaze! When I was thinking up these tracks I felt they could be it, but since I've only listened to like 2 shoegaze songs before and they weren't that similar to what I had in my mind I wasn't too sure!

Love the ambient feeling of Same Place, Years Later.  Very nostalgic and dreamy.  And the other song made me want to move! Nice work!

And yeah Synth V from what I've seen is usually used with lyrics in various languages, but I felt like that maybe it could work well for just "aahs" and "oohs" and so I just went for it and bought it! Thankfully I think it worked well in this case!
