This game is incredible. The story and atmosphere and so gripping. The graphics and music all fit so well. The story is so good and fits so well within the rest of the lore that I wish it were confirmed true. The cute portraits contrast well with the rest of the visuals.

Hijiri started protecting yokai for selfish reasons, but she ended up taking pity on them; which humans rejected, so she was sealed in Makai because of being "demon in human form". This game explains many things in a great way, such as: who Shinki is, who Yumeko is and why she looks like a maid, what happened to Byakuren while being sealed, why Byakuren's scroll is limitless and won't deteriorate over time, who pc98 Alice is and why she's a completely different person now.
I especially like how, after so much time being chained on the same place, we, the player, also enjoy anything special thrown at us, like the illusion of pandaemonium

I loved my time with the game. Beautiful ending. 10/10

whoops the formatting didnt work! I'm new here...

Developer

Thanks for playing! I'll be releasing a slightly extended version in a few days or so that adds some of the cut content that didn't make the original "full" release, which further explains some of the lore (like why Shinki is so often busy) and adds a few more PC98 character cameos.

I've never been credited as kikoro before, so that's new. (opening credits)

Anyway, I couldnt make it past the forgive/dont forgive screen. Shinki's theme failed to load and kept stopping gameplay to ask to attempt to reload it. Couldn't even see the fairy I worked on ;-;

Developer

Whoops, sorry, I just updated the game! This causes malfunctions for whoever was playing at the time.

You should be able to continue from where you last saved. Also, will update the credits to properly reflect your name, sorry!

This VN-type game has an incredibly fascinating atmosphere! Byakuren's story in Makai seems to be a rarely explored concept, so it's very interesting to see how it's visualized this way.

The gameplay bits proper are simple and do what they need to, despite the currently awkward dodging minigame. The biggest issue is the extremely low default sensitivity of the mouse, but the Q and E buttons make up for it.

The visuals are presented excellently! The 3D models do what they need to and they do it well - as do the dialogue boxes and well-fitting music. You've found a really good formula with these!

My favorite part of the visuals is the cute portraits and character art. (^∇^)

The writing brings everything together as well. Every character has a lot of personally and is integrated well into a good image of what Makai is like over time. Overall, I can tell that a lot of care is being put into the story.

The jam's theme is also implemented amazingly into the writing. Yumeko's part was of particular interest to me because it explores what seems to be a less common facet of the theme in a very natural way - especially when juxtaposed with others in the story.

In any case, this is an excellent read so far, with numerous choices to go through! I'm looking forward to seeing how this develops!

Thanks for playing! The full release will be out in 1 or 2 days (3 at worst), so I hope you will check it out then too!

The power of yuri can outshine hell.

This games story is great, the relationship byakuren and shinki have is griping and at the end I was genially invested. The thing that makes this relationship so great is that the game takes time to make both sides feel like real people with their own flaws and pros or at least what I felt while reading.

However.... I will say I do not like the 3d models and the demon dodging parts feel like filler, but the story more then makes up for it.

Developer

Thanks for playing! Lots of 3D models are rushed or outright broken in this first release. Some like the evil eye will be fixed in the next one, although it's hard to do so many while still programming the game!

As for the gameplay parts, they gain much more story relevance in the later stages. First is basically a tutorial and 2nd actually didn't get its story relevance yet (missing 3D model on jam release).

Been playing through jam submissions and this one so far is ABSOLUTELY my favourite. Can't wait for a full release!

I was hooked from the very beginning and I can't wait to play the full release. The atmosphere and the 3D assets are somewhat dark and uncanny but they set the mood so well >.<!!!  The characters from Undefined Fantastic Object are among my favorites and seeing the story of Byakuren like this combined with Makai with so much fondness and uniqueness makes me very very happy.

My Favorite Part: How simple it is, yet... how captivating it is. I adore every second of it. I played on the browser so I got to make sure not lose my save states

Thanks for playing! Full release is still going to take about another week, but I hope it'll deliver on your expectations then!

What impressed me the most about this story was the grasp you had on writing Byakuren. Everything felt exactly right in how she carried herself and how she talked to other people. I got the sense that if she asked to be released early, Shinki wouldn't hesitate to do so. But, that's not who Byakuren is. She knows things happen for a reason, and is content waiting things out over centuries. I can't wait to play the full release.

Developer

Thanks for playing! I actually had to learn about Byakuren's lore/personality quite a bit while writing the script initially. For instance, I wrote her as an atheist Buddhist in the first draft, before later learning she did worship Bishamonten "in the past", so I had to rewrite some scenes to conform to that.

I hope the final product will also impress you!
