Description
On a cold summer night, as Sally was heading for bed, she realises that she forgot her trusty camera outside!
After spending all day taking photos in Trapwater Beach's Grotto for tomorrow's picture contest, she hurriedly went home for dinner, with her camera and photos still in the caves! But hotheaded Sally isn't afraid of the dark! And so she goes to retrieve her belongings in secret. What she doesn't know, however, is that she may inadvertently awaken something that could put the whole world at risk...
After all, one should not roam near Trapwater's caves when midnight comes... Or so it goes. Sally doesn't care, she needs those photos!
A detailed list of what each track represents can be found on the game's page! I recommend reading it while listening.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The game, while being lighthearted at times, can also have pretty grim and profound moments, as well as more mellow situations where nothing much happens to juxtapose the wacky stuff. I think I did a decent job pulling that off
Genres: Pretty varied, usually whatever fit the mood I was trying to convey. Electronic, rock, orchestra, chiptune, general instrument soundbanks
Length: A little under 30 minutes, I recommend getting comfortable lol
Process: Usually whenever I compose I throw stuff at the wall until it just starts sounding good, sometimes it takes a while and other times it doesn't, I think most composers can relate to that. However as I got more experience I also have a better idea of what I want to achieve with the songs I make
Software: I use Cubase 5 for all my stuff, I tried using more recent versions but I just prefer the old one lol. I also use Famitracker for 8 bit tracks
Inspiration: My main inspiration for this project was the theme lol, but more generally it's just stuff I grew up with, Ratchet and Clank, Asterix and Obelix XXL2, Megaman... To name a few
Message from the artist
This has been a very fun experience and really let me experiment with awesome stuff. I'm glad I joined this! Even if I end up not scoring too high lol, it was still awesome
Never stop composing.
Theme

How does it fit the theme?
The game happens over the course of ONE SUMMER NIGHT... and I used the sea as a main location... And you play as a girl... yeahhhh didn't go too crazy on that one lol

That's a lot of songs. There's so much more story in here than it's letting on.
Greetings, my dude. Let me set the stage for you - it is now Monday, one day after the rating period for this jam was supposed to have ended. I have now rated 99 submissions - not as many as I would have liked to have gotten through, but each of those was an honest and whole-hearted listen that I felt I gave the proper amount of attention that each of these submission deserves. I stumble upon yours - cool little artwork, neat idea. Oh god, there's 800 songs here. I have to go to work in like 2 hours and this is all the time I have left for ratings. Why would you do this to me?
Now don't get me wrong, 16 tracks is quite impressive, and I have nothing but respect for that level of dedication (and presumably overextension of yourself, unless you literally had nothing else to do - in which case I will just choose envy.) But you do have to keep in mind that you are asking for quite a bit of time and effort here.
The worst thing is, like these tracks are actually good - so now I have to sit here and listen to all 16 of them and attempt to come up with some sort of coherent review. Personally, I love giving feedback and honest reviews - it's one of my favorite parts of the jam! But I am also that unique combination of overly wordy, ADHD, OCD, etc - meaning I will sit here and type/retype this out several times trying to not only get my message across as close to my intention as possible, but also to attempt to give you my undivided (as much as it can be at least) attention for an honest and accurate review.
Anyway, I haven't done any of that because I was typing the above nonsense, so I'm already behind. What's the point I'm making? Bruh, this is a lot of music. As someone who also puts way too much effort into everything that they have ever done (see the above text for exhibit A,) at some point you gotta slow down and say "Maybe ten tracks is enough" lmao
The problem is, this is an endeavor to listen to. I am enjoying it, as I'm listening while I'm typing this obviously, but trying to keep up with creating an honest and in-depth review while paying attention to the details that you've not only put into the music but your story as well - tbh, it's difficult. What the hell is this megaman nonsense that suddenly popped up in track 8? That was cool, nice work there. And going back a bit: "Old Yellow Lights" has quite the vibe going on with that organ bass. It kind of reminds me of The Doors "Riders on the Storm" but paired with everything else in the song it creates a feeling somewhere between soothing and melancholy. Nice job on that one. I'm also loving the Persona 5 vibes in "Trapwater Beach," it sounds like it could have easily been a palace infiltration theme.
And you know - I've only got two monitors. So I've gotta go back and keep referencing what you've written for each track, because I'm too old and lazy to size the windows down to make everything fit. Besides, then I'd have to just scroll back and forth more and that would also annoy me. How much of all this is a me problem? I'm not going to answer that. I like how in Darker Hometown we kind of switched to this heroic vibe halfway through. Speaking of switching things up, why is this Calypso Lemonade dude all about the chiptube vibes? Is he a gamer? I assume he's like an ancient greek warlord zombie or some other nonsense, does he have an atari in his cave or something? Not to say I didn't like how it played out, I just thought it was an interesting turn for the soundtrack when you start getting into the "Grotto" how things start getting much more... chipper. Chippier. Whatever, you know what I mean.
I like the concept of turning villagers back to normal with a camera flash, but tbh if somebody shot a camera flash in my face while I was asleep, I'd probably wake up too? Also, that flash has got to be alerting the guards or something, right?
Okay, Sally is having a moment here. I get it girl, it's been a long night of fighting the ancient, long forgotten ancestors of Dhali Lama, Dhali's Llamas. Not to mention watching everyone you know and love get turned into mindless drones and having to flash them all to fix them... uhh, let's take a step back with the phrasing there, actually. Ooh, that's a cool guitar that just came up in "The Lighthouse." I get the feeling that some serious stuff is about to go down here. The transition into the loop is an interesting choice, musically - it actually works really well as a kind of shortcut to get back to the vibe at the beginning of the song. Which, in proper fashion, you included a snippet of in the very beginning of that track. Nice work there.
Okay, I'm into this final boss battle so far. Starts off strong and the synth lead hooked me in properly. Calypso brings out his brand new NES (I guess he stole it from someone in the town) for the fight, I see. Ooh, those are some sick chords with the choir just past the halfway point. And of course, we've got a little guitar breakdown at the end. Nice. And was that a callback at the 3/4 mark of the song? It sounds like one, but I honestly can't remember as I started listening to this soundtrack six weeks ago and I'm starting to lose track of time.
If that's not a callback to "Calypso'sTheme" in "Not Forgotten" then it was close enough to fool me. I'm glad he got to play his Atari one last time before presumably evaporating back into the darkness from whence he came.
Photo Finish? There was a photo contest? Oh, I guess that's why she had a camera. Oh, you did say that in like the second sentence or something, but I read that part back in my youth, you know? I'm old now, I can't be expected to be remember all these details (just kidding, I was old before too)
Anyway, scrubbing back through your OST real quick, I think where it really shines is the area themes. Trapwater Beach, Grotto, Darker Hometown, The Lighthouse - these are all areas where you'd be listening to the music on repeat for awhile I would think since you're running around doing stuff there. In proper fashion, they are the more memorable tracks. Both fight themes were pretty boppin', too. My only issue here is the little drum break I feel might last for juuuuust a bar or two long in "The Grand Finale!" and then the drums are gone for a bit too long before the song loops again. Emotion-wise, it translates well, I just worry the energy drops a little too much at the end for what should still be an intense boss fight.
So all-in-all, this is a very cohesive and complete entry. I definitely enjoyed listening to it, and the length of it gave me plenty of time to complain about the length of it. Don't try to work out the logistics of that. Great work, now don't ever make me do this much work again, thanks.
Probably the best review I've gotten, honest criticisms and good feedback. I totally get the rewriting your message thing while listening to the soundtrack to make it coherrent. Before reading this I was proud of how many tracks I managed to come up with, but in retrospect, yeah not there's like 200 other submissions left, and I definitely could've slimed the soundtrack down, I'm shooting myself and whoever actually listens to my stuff in the foot at this point lol. No matter how much time you think your idea deserves, people (me included) will definitely prefer something shorter and more concise. If I participate next year and you happen to find my submission, hopefully you won't go through too much suffering lol.
Honestly, the flash waking up the villagers and/or alerting the guards sounds like an interesting mechanic, would make the game a bit stealthy. (Can you tell that the story was very last minute? lol)
As for the chiptune nonsense, I would tell you that I used it to make Calypso and the Dalmas feel like those old, almost alien figures roaming in the dark that throw off the natural sound of the world just by existing... But the truth is I just wanted to experiment with chiptune and pairing it with more realistic instruments lol. I'm glad you enjoyed it despite the weirdness of it. I'm very happy someone noticed details like that among with other stuff I've put here and there, makes it worth putting thought into making your songs.
I knew there was something wrong with Grand Finale but couldn't point it out. I'll definitely keep it in mind when writing more energitic tracks.
Thanks a lot for this review, dude, it made me feel emotions. I'm so glad the timer was extended by a day lol, I'll make sure to rate your submission too
This was really cool! I really the variety of instruments and thought the blending between them (i.e. chiptune + drum and amen break / downtempo dnb) was really well done! Very nice work!
And there 16 SONGS OF IT?!? Insane work, very well done x2
Sounds like it came straight from a GBA game. Very good overall!
My favorite track was the final boss theme.
Fantastic soundtrack!!!! It was amazing from start to finish. Its hard to say much since it does everything so well, but I realllllyyyy loved all the high energy tracks! :D
29 minutes, 44 seconds of music telling a story and not one second of it did I get tired. Every track flows so seamlessly into each other both musically and narratively, it's clear that a LOT of love was put into this. The slow buildup in intensity all the way to Dalma Commando feels so earned with how explosive it is, and bringing it back to Darker Hometown (easily one of my favs) to build back up again for an act 2, man. I think at The Lighthouse (easily my fav) I was fully and completely locked into this story. The Lighthouse is so good. I love the way the motif is used, the energy shifts, everything aaaaaaaa. This is some crazy work, fantastic job!!!
suprizingly deep story whit alot of tracks . Props for you makin 16 TRACKS IN A WEEK?! and all of the tracks fit the theme, make for a coherent story and none of the tracks are boreing. Some tracks give me omori vibes but it might just be me. Aslo there are some audio glitches in the tracks but that might just be the program. Owerall Great job for the ost and i really enjoyed the experience you created :]
Thanks for the comment! I've never played Omori before but I've heard good things about it.
If you can find the time, it would really help if could point out those audio glitches so they won't appear in future songs!
So old yelow lights has a sort of clipping/popping while the bass is playing, the same thing hapens in lord of darkness where when the chords hit the audio clips, Calipso the greath also has them but they apear randomly.
hope this helps:]
Everything is top notch chiptune and I can totally see it being in a game.
Gave you an itch follow, and liked/reposted the entire playlist in SoundCloud.
If you like the thing(s) on my page(s), consider doing the same.
Cheers!

Wow, great work on this! There's so much fun and personality in this music, it was fantastic to listen to! I really felt like I experienced an adventure on this one. I think my favorite part about the OST is how your tracks manage to convey the personality of Calypso so well. Your music makes him feel just 'evil' enough, but also so humorous and human in way, making him a relatable villian through sound alone. Really cool stuff. Also, so much music output in a week! Plus amazing art! It's incredible. Really great work, and thanks for sharing!
You create such fun and addictive melodies. The reoccurring melodic motifs you weave throughout the score tie things together nicely. Trapwater Beach has an almost spy/detective feel I can imagine Sally moving in and out of the shadows, and then you sneak in that tender ending. I love the pitch bendy goodness on that track too. The little intermissions you give us, like A Moment of Peace and A Moment of Hope, add a nice change of pace and give our ears time to rest a bit. Your pacing throughout the soundtrack is really well done, and that can be a tricky thing to accomplish. Thank you for such a fun adventure!
Not to repeat your words back at you, but it just sounds like an exisiting game soundtrack, it's all so complete! Even without the recurring themes it all sounds so coherent! The tracks are very dynamic and exciting without getting in the way of (imagined) gameplay. The grand finale was fantastic!
Honestly you did so much that it's hard to judge as a whole (funny coming from me haha), but it's all really well done and polished.
I listened through a couple times to really get a good idea, sorry I didn't have as much feedback as you gave me! A good sign I hope! I'll make sure to keep an eye out for whatever you work on next!
Hi, thanks for you feedback. I honestly don't mind the length of comments, I just happen to yap a lot during my own lol. Even short 1 phrase comments mean a lot to me, cause someone made an effort to say something haha. I appreciate you listening to the ost a few more times considering it's length. I'll make sure to check on you too, your stuff's awesome.
Honestly, this is an absolutely insane soundtrack! I'm trying to find holes and think of things to critique, but I think you just did a phenomenal job. I guess if anything, there maybe isn't the most consistent main voice for the soundtrack as a whole? Like one anchor to hang onto as a part of its identity. Or maybe some of your loops could be improved? I don't know, the best I have are these specific nitpicks lol you've done a fantastic job!!
Thank you! I've gotten simillar critiques before and I'll be sure to improve on them for next time. I tried to link most of the songs by the usage of the electric piano and strings and I realise now that it's not really enough.
I also agree on the loops part, a lot of time I just slap em into and don't change much haha, but thank you still.
Linking through instrumentation is very important and I think you've definitely nailed that aspect! Could just do with a little more on the compositional side but once you start doing that, I think your skills are going to soar.
This is an incredible soundtrack! I love the retro feel of the music and how every track scores each moment in the game perfectly. And the story was quite enjoyable to read (with the artwork complementing it nicely). I'm amazed that you were able to compose so many tracks in only nine days. Awesome job!
Wow my appoligies I really thought I left a longer message on here. This whole set was amazing! it really is just drag and drop into a video game material. Its ready to go and I really respect your craft!
Simple songs but so very effective ! Even with mixed genres throughout the soundtrack, you kept everything cohesive and with such a nice weird atmosphere, i really liked it !!
16 tracks is insane, you had to like make 1-2 tracks every day. I like the drums in Grotto (the triangle bass is too loud though) , some of the tracks get groovy. This definitely sounds like a real soundtrack, I would love if this was in a real game. Also nice, someone that uses FamiTracker (I didn't use it for the jam). Overall this was fun to listen to.
oh what a ride i had. i played this while reading for my college works then i was shocked how boppable they were.
my fav is enemy infiltration. it's so eerie. i also like how it sounds like the final boss' intro.
This was definitely and experience, I'll just say that. Each song was very high quality and composed super well! My favorite is definitely Trapwater Beach, it's so groovy! My only complaint is that some of the tracks feel like they would come from an entirely different game - but that's not exactly a bad thing! Different styles of music can make the sountrack feel more fresh and not repetitive. I really enjoyed listening to all these tracks, and the your concept for the game sounds like it would be a huge hit! Really good stuff, keep it up!
Also how did you find the time to make all this music?? I felt like I was super rushed with only 12 minutes and you have a full 30! Genuinely super impressive that you were able to quickly make this while keeping them high quality!
Thank you for your comment and feedback!
You're not alone in your complaint, one of my friends told me that some songs like "Grotto" and "The Lighthouse" felt like they didn't fit despite being alright. I tried using an electric piano and strings to tie the tracks together but I'll admit that I didn't try as hard to stay consistent (this has been a bit of a problem recently when making songs). I'll keep that in mind for next time, though, I still have a lot to learn, even if this is my fifth year making songs now.
About the quantity... Ehh I'm not sure, I've listened to soundtracks in this jam that felt a lot more thought out than mine. I guess that's it, "thought out" instead of "quality", I guess? You can still have good songs, even on a short timeframe, but a few songs that are really thought out can really be special in my eyes. I was afraid people would get suspicious that I started composing before the jam lol. I didn't really have a lot going on these past few days so I basically spent every waking hour working on this, which I must say is NOT healthy, but I did have a lot of fun!
I guess everyone has a different speed at which they go about things. At the end of the day though, it's the final product that counts, no matter how fast or slow you are.
Maybe I'll do some kind of devlog lol, that could be fun
my own stream of consciousness incoming:
what a hefty submission! getting a full 30 minutes of music completed within a week is truly aspirational for a slow-moving composer such as myself!
i love your use of recurring melodies and motifs, it really helps the project feel cohesive throughout its variety of styles.
trapwater beach is SUCH a vibe! the disco-esque strings with the groovy rhythm guitar was such a groove!
grotto is also such a strong composition - it feels so intricate but not too busy, and the gritty drums are, yet again, a vibe!
calypso the great caught me SO off guard, it's so wonderfully heavy and cool... so fun!
dalma commando has such a sick boss fight vibe... sorry to describe everything as a vibe, but it's truly ALL such a vibe! the chiptune work in this track is absolutely sickening (complimentary)
what an intro for enemy infiltration... i felt myself in that pre-boss fight scramble of trying to find potions and prepare for the upcoming battle...
a moment of hope is such a perfect placement of that original melody and a break from the tension of the previous tracks, and really highlighted that beautiful melody so well!
i love the guitar treatment in the lighthouse! and the return of those punchy strings was very welcome - always vibing to those! plus some sick modulations throughout?? a sucker for a sudden key change...
the beefy return of the calypso the great theme in lord of darkness, i love!
the grand finale! what a fantastic culmination of the previous tensions! the weaving of the melodies and motifs is so well executed to fit the higher energy and peak of the action. theres an almost contrapuntal feeling towards the end of the track, the way your melodies fit around each other and complement each other so well!
another welcome breather in not forgotten... good to get my heart rate back down after the grand finale...
photo finish is the perfect credits song to cap off this project, it's so good!
overall, this was such a wonderful submission... i had seen the runtime of it and planned to put in on in the background while i worked, but it immediately captivated me and held my attention for the entire duration, so instead, you get all my unfiltered thoughts! i genuinely do not have a single piece of criticism - i loved every second of this project!
The idea of the game is so cool! I wanna play it for real haha. Awesome music. Old yellow bricks was my fav.
