Thank you for playing my game PixelQuest! I'm glad you had fun, I'd be very surprised if you DID manage to finish the game, because I don't think anyones been able to yet since it's too hard haha.

cut game cant not find the little ducklings

Developer

Thanks for playing my game Dennis! When you say you "cant not find the little ducklings", doesn't that mean you CAN find the ducklings? haha

No doubt the highlight of the game is the art! Not that the other aspects are bad, of course — but the art really stands out for its beauty, found in the simplest of shapes, and for that charming vector style that I personally find super appealing. However, from what I noticed, the duck specifically seems to use some shapes that might bend the jam’s limitations a bit, unfortunately… Mainly the texture and the beak — while you can tell it’s based on a pentagon, it ends up being heavily overlapped by the circle.

The game is quite difficult haha — I tried several times to save all the ducks, but I felt like a terrible mom (or dad?) because the best I could do after many attempts was saving just two.

That said, I found the core mechanic very interesting and also quite unique — at least from what I’ve seen so far, I haven’t come across anything quite like it. The sound is pleasant, and the tutorial does a great job — I understood what to do right away thanks to it, even though in practice, the enemy felt way more chaotic haha.

Maybe adding a few extra mechanics could help enhance the gameplay and engagement. For example: buttons that deactivate specific pentagons and open up temporary shortcuts for the player to reach their goal faster. Another idea I had was to add a new kind of “safe zone” — a checkpoint where ducks could be dropped off, so that if the player loses, they wouldn’t have to restart their progress from scratch.

As mentioned, I wasn’t able to finish the game due to its difficulty — but that didn’t stop me from having fun. You did a great job with the theme, and you should absolutely be proud of it! Congrats on your game, and I wish you the best of luck in the jam and beyond!

Wow! Thank you so much for your extensive and thoughtful comment Zoldyck, and thank you for playing my game!

I know, the duck head overlapping the beak doesn't quite fit the requirements of the jam, which is my bad. This is my first actual jam I've done by myself and I'm blown away by the genuine and kind responses I've gotten so thank you.

I love your suggestions for the game, I will definitely take some heavy inspiration from you for my next update. I was thinking of adding more levels for the game and the shortcut suggestion is something I will definitely implement into my levels! Also, having "safe zone" checkpoints where you can drop off the ducklings is genius! I was thinking of ways to make the game more forgiving for the player, and this is exactly what the game needs!

Again, thank you so much for your feedback, it means SOO much!

Yay! Vector art! I liked the simplistic style too. I disagree, I DO believe your theme is 5 stars worth. BECAUSE it's technically your mouse cursor and that one didn't have to follow the shape requirements. Meaning the little ducklings attach to your mouse cursor would now just be an extension of  your mouse cursor. That's my logic at least, it's plausible. The little arrow in the tutorial seems to be made with the font and text was also allowed, didn't see anywhere that it couldn't be shaped into an arrow. The game difficulty I would work on. I did not finish it, I got frustrated at getting busted. I think you did a great job! It's fun and it's original. 👌

Hi Trickylady! Thanks so much for your feedback! Thank you SO much for giving my theme 5 stars, I'm flattered haha (love how your brain works). The game difficulty WILL be tweaked and I'll make it a lot easier and more forgiving in the future.

Thanks so much for your AMAZING feedback!

i loved this!! such a cute game with a great vibe. i did find it really difficult and after an embarrasing number of attempts on my best attempt i only saved two ducklings 😭

a couple feedback points:

  • i think the duck character contains some not allowed shapes (the eyes) and i think the arrow in the tutorial is also not allowed, but otherwise you made great use of the shapes so seems not too bad to me
  • sometimes when boosting i would get stuck in the walls, and i think it would be good if boosting shook off enemies who are chasing you
  • maybe could do with some kind of ability to help you escape enemies while you're leading the ducklings? i found it really difficult even with just one duckling but could be a skill issue

overall you did a great job and i really like the game :) great work!!!

Thanks for playing my game! I definitely realised too late that playtesting is very important (I never managed to get all the ducklings either).

  • Yeahh, I should've changed the duck to fit the allowed shapes more. That would've been an easy fix.
  • That launch ability that made you stuck in the wall was something I added in the last 40 minutes of the jam after a last minute play test and that was the last thing I wanted to fix, but I didn't have time.
  • I love that idea! The game is very unforgiving, if you get caught while holding a duckling you HAVE to let it go. It's definitely not just you, the game is too difficult.
