Theme

Krems (Fish team)

Correlation to theme
Phase 1 (start - 1:40):
Krems is a frantic hunter, and so this song starts off like a fast-paced stealth mission through the forest. Krems' moves are erratic and can never be fully predicted. You’re constantly unsure about his position and can only assume he hasn’t found you… since otherwise you wouldn’t be alive anymore!

Phase 2 (1:40 - end):
And Krems is no ordinary hunter. He is a _mushroom_ hunter. He collects the mushrooms he hunts, and occasionally he finds a particular rare mushroom: a Super Mushroom! And when Krems is pushed into a corner, he won't hesitate to use it! In this phase, Krems grows into a gigantic version of himself, and all you can do is run until he shrinks back to his old self! Talk about a menace…

The quality of this production is game ready! I really love the instrument choices you made: the flute, marimba, pizzicato strings, and the percussion elements make this really feel like a mushroom area in a forest/jungle. I think that your percussion work is particularly strong in this track especially to help highlight the interesting stuff you are doing with time signatures, adding in 7/4 and 5/4. The reverb that you used also gives depth and space fitting for this location and really helps me imagine that I am there! Stealth and gigantic shroom are two really fun ideas for battle phases and you paint the picture of each really well. The minor second interval is an excellent choice for conveying stealth, and using timpani and low marimba with a slower tempo works really well to convey the gargantuan size. The sound design in the transition is also really fun! Excellent work with this one! Thanks for sharing!

Thank you so much! <3

Your analysis, as usual, is spot-on! You perfectly describe my design choices, and I'm really glad you find them working and executed well :D. When I first started out a few years ago, I could never have imagined myself pulling something off like this, so this was a big step outside my comfort zone. When I first heard your 'Sunset Sands' in Town Music Jam #1, I remember feeling overwhelmed - this composer (you) was so many levels ahead of me, and I felt like I could never make something like that. I still wholeheartedly admire your music and think you're a level or 15 ahead of me, but I feel like I am slowly "catching up" to your skill level. I am starting to understand what makes music (and also, your music) tick. Though, I still often hear your music and think "damn, how did he make me get goosebumps from this? What is his secret?!" I got a lot to learn still ;)

To this day, I have never gotten a higher rank in any music jam than you. And I have never gotten first place before either. And I am completely fine with both :). But someday, I would love to show you my improvement through a song worthy of first place :D

Thanks again for commenting, I really appreciate it :)

I can feel it coming! I agree that your skill level is on a steep upward trajectory. These tracks that you've made for this jam so far are far better than a lot of songs that I've submitted to jams in the past. I look forward to the day that you get first place, and I hope to be a part of that and to celebrate it too!

Quite uplifting at the start, I think it works really well with the character, with it slowing down for his second phase. Really quite good must say.

Thanks a lot! Really glad you like it :D

Wow, what a banger!

It's awesome! The mushroom taking to become gigantic at the end, the giant's heavy footsteps, the slowing down of the tempo to illustrate the heaviness. It's fantastic.

There are so many things that are good. The 5/4 time signature is so well composed that it's “easy” to listen to.

The choice of instruments sounds like a forest.

I love the sixteenth notes on the marimba.

And you've done a tremendous job with the mixing:

  • -the sound design that illustrates what's happening
  • -the balance between the instruments
  • -the reverb, which is perfectly used to give the impression of depth.

Bravo! Excellent!

Thank you so much! It means a lot for you to say all of this :)

In my past, my songs incorporating odd time signatures were often hard to follow, so I am very glad you think this is "easy" to listen to! Also, every of your points was something I spend a lot of time on (forest theming, balancing of instruments, transition to the giant phase...), so it makes me very happy that you give me so many compliments for them!

Since these compliments come from you, one of my top inspirations, I do not take them lightly. Thanks again :D

I like that when he grows, the music sort of slows down and feels deeper. It fits the gigantic theme. I also like all the natural sounds you got in here. works very well.

Developer

The slowing down was indeed the intended effect, you describe it well! And I'm glad you like the more "natural" forest-y sounds and find it all fitting the theme. Thanks a lot :D

Hehehe I liked the transition sfx ;)

The 5/4 in the first part is really pleasant and nicely used, it gives that stealthy unpredictable feel without being chaotic or overdone. And then switching to 4/4 for the Giant Krems phase makes sense. All the sounds are so pleasant and mushroomy and foresty, I especially like the subtle little tapping percussion.

Thanks a lot! You're early haha, the rating hasn't even begun. I'm glad you like the 5/4 sound and the instrument choice; I took a lot of time deciding everything :D

I am especially glad you like the transition, since that is the thing I worried about the most. I've never been good about transitions, but I want to keep trying it :)

I'm not sure how much time I'm going to have during the rating period and I really want to listen to everyone's work, so I'm getting a head start! It's fun to hear how a bunch of different people think mushrooms sound. I didn't pick that theme because I had no idea how they sound myself. The association that mushrooms are natural fungus that grow in the woods -> woodwinds, wood blocks, wood xylophone, totally makes sense.

Developer(+1)

That's a very respectful idea, to start listening before the rating period if you have little time. I really appreciate the effort! And indeed, the way you explain it is perfect: instruments made of wood, or instruments mimicking sounds found in woods like flutes mimicking wind/birds, work very well here. Great to hear you learned something :D
