Description
I used Ableton to create both of my tracks.
My inspirations for track nr 1 "Mastering Navigation" was: Steve Reich, Kevin Penkin and FFXX who created the soundtrack for the game "Nine Sols"
My inspirations for track nr 2 "Away from home, Towards the unknown" was: Christopher James Larkin (Hollow Knight) and Toru Minegishi (Zelda, Twilight Princess)
My process would begin with finding "satisfying" ambient sounds that felt good to my ear. From that basis I played around with chords and listened to some tracks from my inspirations and took some inspiration of the harmonies and rythms. From there I came up with my own rythms to add to the sounds that I liked. Later on I added more and more elements bit by bit, such as rythmic mallets, drum sounds, background ambiance etc. The melodies were created through playing around and having fun on top of the foundational ambience that I had created, and I ultimately stuck with what I found to be suiting for the Theme and Vision. I also made sure my two tracks used leitmotifs, especially with the clarinett and accordion from one track to the other. Then I cleaned up the sounds with effects and more, and finally mixed and mastered all the exported stems from the project and put together the whole track.
I also made up a story for an imaginary game, but more on that further down in the submission.
I mostly sticked with the text theme "One Summer Night" but I find that the picture is suiting aswell.

This was fun!
Theme
How does it fit the theme?
I'll try to keep this somewhat short: I created a made up story for an imaginary game about a girl who grew up on an isolated island with a vast ocean around her and no sign of any other islands. Growing up on this island the elders often spoke of ancient rumours about other masses of land that exists in their world and how there used to live people who could navigate the oceans in a masterful manner. This inspired the little girl immensely, to the point where she would spend all her free time trying to master precisely that, the art of navigation. The island had boats but they were merely used for fishing and had never traveled far away from the island. She would use signs of ways to navigate by the motion and changes of different things. She would stay up late at night and analyse the formations of the stars, she would spend hours just floating in the water around the island as to get a feel for the currents beneath her, she would scoop water on to her closed mouth to sensitively pick up any changes of temperature as she would paddle away and back towards the island she lived on. Over the years from adolescence to adulthood she would become so skilled at these things that she would be able to feel the currents of the water just by laying down on a boat, she would know exactly what way she was facing at whatever point in time of the night by looking up towards the stars and as an exercise she would paddle out away from the island, close her eyes and spin the boat and then just by feeling the temperature of the water towards her closed mouth, she would know exactly which way the island was. Finally during "One Summer Night", she decided that she was ready. She spent a night enjoying her time with her family, and when everyone was asleep, she snuck out and left a note behind to her parents with a message of her ambition, her story and love for her family. That night she took one of the boats, and took of "Away from home, towards the unknown" The first track "Mastering Navigation" is about the process of her learning all her skills. I envision it as a cinematic cutscene of her drive and process towards an ancient and long forgotten journey, but feel free to envision it as you please. The second track "Away from home, towards the unknown" is when she actually leaves the island behind, watching the warm lights of the island slowly fade away into the dark blue starry night and ocean. Feeling both sorrow and hope and with a deep focus on her task. Why my tracks fit the theme is hopefully self explanatory by the story above. I in short, molded the theme into a story from which I wrote my tracks upon. Making the theme, story and composed music into one.

Perfect blend of background music enhancing the action on the screen, interesting to listen to but not distracting from what's happening in the hypothetical game. You managed to balance so many interesting textures and sound variations it's impressive, I really enjoyed it :)
insane, every ambient sound, texture played with or after each other felt soo god damn smooth
love it!
I adore the imaginativeness of this soundtrack!
I'm a big fan of ambient music, and I must say you've nailed it :D
I'm also a fan of the instrumentation in "Away from home, Towards the unknown" — the accordion was quite a surprise to me!
I wish you the best of luck in this jam; it's been a pleasure listening to this soundtrack :)
Really good work, great instrumentation, the emotions are definitely there and both tracks fit well with the narrative. Everything is really well polished and it all feels whimsical and unique, especially in the second track
First off: the youtube link on your submission page is a "mail:to" link (or maybe my computer is just being weird) but I was not able to open it. The one on your project page works, though.
I love your story idea; I think it walks a very fine line of being unique and well thought through, but also very simple and easy to understand and relate to. Musically, my first thought was "this sounds like something I'd hear in Civilization 2 or 3 while aimlessly exploring the ocean." Take that as you will, but to me that seems like your ideas were translated as intended.
My only critique is song length, and honestly I'm still a bit on the fence on that one. I would say you did thoroughly explore the motifs that you established. The variation in percussive effects, velocity, instruments changing back and forth, etc all do keep things moving in a good direction; it's just.... very, very, slowwwww. Admittedly, this is partially a me problem as I tend to write music that changes directions every 15 seconds - honestly, I don't know that additional variation in chord/key changes, etc would really add a lot of value to what you have here. Some of the charm is in the length and repetitive nature, and the more I re-listen and talk it through, I think you did a good job of varying things with what you used to keep things from getting stale. So I guess just ignore this paragraph, I'm good with it 👍 lmao
Nice work overall, and nice artwork too!
Great ambience, would be a good addition to a sandbox/exploration kind of game.
The starry noises in the second track were my favorite part! They added a sense of whimsy.
I think that the songs could start feeling repetitive though because the same backing track plays for a lot of it without changing. It can be a little distracting at times.
I love the mood you created!
Absolutely love the percussion and the split wind in Away from home,Towards the unknown
You definitely nailed consistency, but the slight arhytmia of the high pitch melody in Mastering Navigation threw me away a bit. I guess it can be used for storytelling? But I felt that it does not belong
Wow, beautiful soundtrack. Mastering Navigation was so very peaceful and satisfying to me. Thank you for the experience :)
Eyyy thank you so so much!!
"Away from home, Towards the unknown" is just absolutely brilliant. Could loop it for hours honestly. I didn't vibe much with the first track but overall both tracks felt connected and this is definitely a soundtrack that would elevate a game. Great production and composition.
Was a pleasure listening. Awesome work!
omg thank you so so much!! This really means a lot :))
Your compositions feel adventurous and calming at the same time. Really unique textures and mixture of instruments. You did a good job creating enough variation to make the tracks stay interesting even when they both build off of one base idea the whole time. Great work!
Wowww thank you sooo much Max!!
That was awesome ! I wish it was one or two tracks longer (I know there was only a week to do it) cause it really felt like an actual soundtrack, great job!
Ps : You didn't mention Minecraft as one of your inspirations for the soundtrack but "Mastering Navigation" really felt like a minecraft theme.
Oh wow, thank you!
