Description
Selections from a fighting game soundtrack with unusually groovy music.

R&R for Angels and A Sly Valkyrie's Challenge are character themes. (Character designs are on the project page.)

I graduated from fistfighting LMMS to "evaluating" Reaper. Very nice to use a DAW that doesn't poop its pants running the lightest of plugins. Speaking of which, all of the virtual instruments I used were free! Yay!

Message from the artist
With the amount of time it's taking/taken for me to complete the artwork for the project, it's safe to say this was a much larger undertaking than I had expected. I did plan for the album to be twice as long, but I think the shorter selection of tracks are tighter and more cohesive.

Theme

One Summer Night
Picture theme

How does it fit the theme?
I pulled on a lot of summery sounds, including club music and latin jazz. These are also very nostalgic sounds for me.

One of the grooviest and most unique soundtracks I've heard so far, I really liked how the drums sounded in R&R for Angels (the whole mix is really pleasant overall). Usually fighting games aren't my thing, but I might get into one if it had this ost playing in the background :D

Like the duet in the 'A Sly Valkyrie's Challenge', the mix could be a bit more balanced.

I LOVE this. Great grooves and lovely chord choices throughout. Easily one of my favorite submissions, nice work!

Personally, I felt it was very chill for a fighting game, but that’s just personal taste. The composition and the character design is really good!

It sounds cool, this chillout soundtrack from the PS1 era reminded me.

This is great! I can really hear your influences shine through on these tracks, which is awesome! Definitely fitting for a fighting game, this is great! And the character design is superb! Well done!

Chie persona 4's Jacket and Chara Undertale's sweater had a baby and it was Panthers fit.

I really like the character design. Did you make it? Because its really good!

I really dug the whole OST. It was so bouncy and catchy! The music was all on point and the instruments were all warm and juicy!

I do wish there was more connection to the theme beyond "summery sounds". But if it is just that, explain further what makes them summery sounds. Like why choose specifically club music and Latin jazz as inspirations? Tell me! It can make me engage with the music further.

Yes, I did do the character art! I'm glad you enjoyed everything overall! Thank you for listening

As for how exactly Latin jazz and club music are connected to the summertime, I don't know if I have a short or easy explanation for you. The connection for both is definitely there if you look, even within video games.

The simpler explanation is that Marvel vs. Capcom 2 is the blueprint not just for tag fighters as a subgenre but in its iconic presentation and style. Of course jazz and funk in arcade games isn't exclusive to that game, either. But it's influence is undeniable, and its recent return to the EVO mainstage in July was part of the inspiration :)

These vibes are definitely impeccable, maybe not for a fighting game, but definitely for quite a few other genres

As a big fighting game fan, I'm glad someone did a fighting game submission! The instrumentation here is super cool and you also have some really sick rhythms and chord changes! I will say there are some moments where the character themes feel a little too chill for a fighting game, so I was wanting a bit more intensity. Very cool project!

Developer

Thank you so much! I definitely feel you on the intensity aspect. I think if I could fit in some of the other song ideas I had, it would have shifted that balance a bit more toward an even mix of hype and chill (for lack of better phrasing...). Thank you so much for listening!

Character Select definitely feels like a character select screen. I love how that jazzy electric piano interacts with the rest of the beat.

A Sly Valkyrie's Challenge is super groovy! The guitar section is such a vibe. I can totally see this as a character theme in a fighting game.

Serious is very serious. Love the cinematic vibes on this one, it feels like a lore-expositing cutscene from a JRPG.

Love the bossa nova groove on Settings. The vibraphone + flute + piano combo works especially well here. My only critique is that this would be terrible music for the settings screen because I would never close the menu.

R&R For Angels is another excellent character theme. I especially like how you used those harp arpeggios to communicate the "angel" characterization. The grandiose orchestral style used here fuses unexpectedly well with the jazz and latin influences.

This is easily my favorite jazz-influenced submission thus far. The jazz, latin, and club influences come through in every track, and many tracks fuse seemingly unrelated genres and styles in a way that feels completely natural and extremely groovy.

Thank you so much for taking the time to listen, I'm glad you enjoyed!
