Theme

Krems (Fish team)

Correlation to theme
I spent 3 hours and 10 minutes making this track and you can see that in the time spent on project screenshot I provided.

The bassline is very fast and short. It almost sounds random at times similar to when you connect a mushroom to electricity and it plays random electric noises.
I also used xylophone and pan flute to emphasize him being a plant creature.
220 BPM and intense drums since it's a battle theme and I like to make exciting fast music.

ooh cool entry! really liked the composition but the mixing feels a bit off, not sure if it's because the synth rising is a bit loud or something else with the lead instruments

Oh I didn’t do any mixing almost at all. My entire 3 hours basically was spent choosing instruments and writing the music. I was so burnt out from rating the entries to OST jam 8 that I literally said I’m not even gonna worry about mixing.

So really it could be anything and your criticisms are likely correct lol

It still surprises me how much you manage to make in 3 hours! I'm sure you must have taken a few hours of "thinking time" before, riiight?

The xylophone (similar to a Marimba) sounds very wooden, and together with the pan flute it surely fits a forest-sound. It is nicely fast-paced with fast bass and drums, fitting the boss aspect. As usual, your chords and melodies are nice and memorable. Really cool, as usual, well done :D

the only thinking time I took was the night before, I asked my friend and he said to make it sound like that one song called “Bloopin” that sounds really swampy for lack of a better term. But even then the song I made was nothing like it it really was just 3 hours and I had no ideas going in other than a single instrument that didn’t even come to fruition.

Thank you for enjoying it!

i love it :D

honestly the power up sounds give it so much more energy and its sooo creative the way you mix a slow flute with an energetic synth lead perfect for a nimble fighter like krems amazing job ^-^

Developer

Thank you! I'm glad you liked it!

Gonna be honest, I didn't know what you meant by "power up sounds" until I gave it another listen and realized that yeah the riser really does sound like a power up. It was completely unintentional lol. I chose that riser because it reminded me somewhat of the electronic noise mushrooms make when you connect them to like an audio device.

This is a really fun track! It reminds me of Mega Man music. The fast bouncy bass arpeggios, use of marimbas, and the flute lead all lend themselves to a foresty environment sound ripe for mushroom growth where it would make a lot of sense to find this enemy. I really like the bridge section where all the instruments are playing the syncopated melody in unison. I’m so impressed that this took only ~3 hours! Great work and thank you for sharing!

Developer

Thank you!

I'm glad you liked it! Them playing in unison helped me go fast since it makes it richer without having to think of different melodies lol.

Super dynamic! Really great to listen to.

You have a real talent for creating polished music in a very short time.

Now for the technical points: the rising sound that serves as a transition is good but overused. For some transitions, you could simply stop the drums a few bars before the next section starts, which would allow for some variety and doesn't take long to do (especially for someone who loves speedrunning like you).

In any case, I love the NES/chiptune vibe without the chiptune sound—it's a really cool sound.

Developer (1 edit) (+1)

oh yeah I think the riser is probably overused. It’s a much louder riser than I normally use so it stands out more. and since I was really just going fast, I didn’t make any different or unique drum transition segments. They’re all the same lol.

I would be curious how you feel about my OST jam 8 entry though since I put a lot more time into those songs.

I'll take the time to listen to that.

I'll send you my feedback in a private message :)

Exciting!

Your pixel art Krems is so cute! I can really envision this game between the music and the pixel art, and I'd want to play it.

All the fast bits in your tracks fit together really well even when there were a bunch of voices, and all the variations kept it from feeling repetitive. I like it!

Developer(+1)

Thank you!

Making fast music is really fun! It feels easy to keep it from being repetitive because with so many notes I can change them up so easily.

I gave myself a 50x30 canvas I think to make him since I didn’t want to take too long and I thought he came out quite well.
