How does your game fit the Magical Girl Genre?
The main character is a Magical Girl Knight with plant based abilities who has been created and granted her powers by the Earth to protect her home. She is able to collect Seeds/Arms to transform parts of her body.

Which theme(s) do you pick?
Snake Eater

How does your game fit those theme(s)?
The design of the level is circular in shape, mimicking that of a snake eating its own tail. We had also incorporated several narrative themes from other games in our premise and design, which we can elaborate if asked.

If you follow any of the optional challenges, elaborate as you like.
We did not incorporate the optional challenges into our game.

Were the assets for your game made during the jam? Elaborate as you see fit.
We used some pre-made assets, all of which are listed on the game's main itch page. We also used some third party unity packages also list on the game's itch page. The vast majority of programming, and the main design of the character (including banner art) was all made durring the game jam time frame.

Good work finishing your project for this jam.

The plant growing mechanic is interesting. Other than that though, there are a few stuffs that hold back this game:

  • Artstyle clash: I have to assume the enemies are assets. Due to the differing pixel sizes between the enemies and the rest of the environment they clash very hard.
  • Lack of sound
  • Slippery control: This is usually not very good in a platformer

Anyways though, thanks for joining!

I really liked the mechanic of growing the plants to help you progress. However, after I had progressed a lot, my character got stuck inside a wall due to a weird collision interaction, and I couldn't do anything else after that.

I really like the way the mechanics felt, and I think there were a lot of cool concepts in what was presented.

The text was too small for the size of the window, which made it really hard to read

I think the slippery ground would be fine if the brambles were also slippery, the friction on the brambles felt rough in comparison.

When you die, the resets don't make sense. I died next to a red claw, and where I respawned meant I couldn't get back to it.

What I Liked:

  • Player character is cool, nicely animated
  • I liked your bramble bridge. I don't think it felt super nice to use/interact with, but I loved the idea and it was easily my favorite power
  • Large diversity of powers to use (some of them felt less impactful/meaningful)
  • Big map to explore (but I did get frustrated trying to navigate the underground area)

Notes:

  • Nitpicky, but I really dislike that the ground is always slippery
  • Also nitpicky, but the camera follows the character oddly. If I stop moving, the camera has to backtrack a bit, which is unpleasant for motion sickness issues.
  • I wish the game felt more visually cohesive. Nothing felt like it belonged together, including the pirate enemies.
  • The game broke when I switched to the red claw power, and I was unable to continue playing the game.
Developer

Can you let me know if you were playing on WebGL or Windows when you experienced the break while switching? And if on WebGL, which browser? That is so strange.

Same as Nine, when I selected the red claw power I could no longer switch to other weapons, or use the claw itself. Windows v0.1.0. And sometimes bramble can push you inside a collider (inside a mountain/wall) and only restarting can get the player out.

The bramble power is a great mechanic. (despite the small glitch)

Really cool bramble mechanics but the game can really use some tighter controls. The frame rate on web is quite bad when I played. I got stuck in the bramble quite often and they are really slippery too so that makes it a bit hard to move around. Level is really big but easy to get lost too.

Developer

Aah I'm sorry about the frame rate! We had 5~ different people test it before submission, but I think all of our machines are at about the same power level, so we'll have to make sure to test WebGL builds on a wider variety next time. There is a Windows version available so hopefully that offers a better performance experience if you decide to try again.
I definitely hear you about the bramble stuff and the really big level. Definitely stuff we've talked about wanting to clean up in the future if we keep working on this. Thank you for giving our game a shot!
If you don't mind, could you elaborate on what you mean by tighter controls? Do you mean the control layout or how the character controller feels?

Awee the main characters sprites are so cute <3  Is there meant to be audio or didn't have time to get to it? (I can hook you up with the composers I used if you want some music!)

I liked the growing the vines feature to help traverse the environment but started getting a little lost in the underground lair >.<' I noticed a glitch where I would keep getting stuck and frozen in the vines too till lthey disappeared!

Was good fun though thank you :)

Thank you! It was my first time doing pixel art and animating anything @.@ I learned a lot!
Yeah we didn't end up getting around to sound :C I think creating 4 unique abilities, each with their own set of animations was maybe a bit too much even for a month xD I definitely hear you on getting lost lol we tried to add some very direct sign posting, but I definitely still got lost myself. It was also our level designer's first time building a level lol And yeah it's a shame about the vines :\ We might end up working on this project a bit more beyond the jam to try to get a more polished vertical slice, just for more experience and to have some stuff we can use for future projects.
I'm glad you were able to have fun despite the issues! Were you able to use any of the other Arms/Abilities by chance? My favorite to use for traversal was the claw :3 It was going to be called "Thorn Claw", but I didn't have enough time to actually finish all the sprites so all the arms don't have any of the extra flavor that was supposed to tie them to the plants they were going to be based off of lol
