Overall presentation is great! It feels and plays well, but it took a while to get the timings right. The gameplay focus on interrupting enemy attacks is great but I wish there would be more feedback on getting hit. It was still too hard for me to get past room 8 though :D

This feels like a vertical version of Karateka :)  The combos and background music are really nice.  I think the game would be easier if "up" was jump instead of "B", but maybe I just need to time my button presses better.

Developer

Yeah I think you're right, though it makes it more difficult to jump on a diagonal. but maybe with the full air control that's a non-issue!

This was really good, a satisfying beat em up. Kinda wish the enemies got knocked back a bit just to round off the feeling of impact.

Developer

absolutely! If I work on this more there is so much I need to do!

I’m also on Linux and had issues where the Playdate Simulator would not run the .pdx folder. I saw the same error as Franchovy described.

I was able to use the Simulator to upload the folder to my Playdate, though!

This one is pretty slick! Love the animations on the little beefy guy. His movement feels nicely constrained.

It took me a while to understand that the flying drills were hurting me. A wind-up animation for them would help, or maybe a hurt state for the player character.

Died on level 4 thinking “surely there will be a health upgrade around here, or a third type of enemy”, but those are just some ideas for future work.

Congrats! This is cool!

Yeah, totally ran out of time to add more enemy types. polish animations or get item drops in. Thanks for playing!

Such buffness, yeeesss :D The tiny sprites work really nicely with all that detail!

I wish there was an animation for the jump over the enemy attack, but I love seeing the BOOM! Nevermind the animation was hidden behind the fx and the BOOM!

I was also confused at first that the Exit wasnt opening, but I had left an enemy behind after jumping over it and it didnt exactly come looking for me. Also one time I opened a door and there were 3 flying enemies and two boars right behind it to finish me off^^

No pdz file errors for me! Made it to floor 5 where I got finished by some boars. It's missing a bit of damage feedback, or some feed-forward on enemy attacks - I was running around without really realizing I'd lost half my health already, and couldn't really say when or how I'd lost that health.

Could also obviously use more enemy variety, flashier player animations etc, but what's there is nice, and player controls feel good which is probably the most important thing to get right

Uh oh, maybe the same issue I had when I uploaded:

Update error: Couldn't find pdz file main.pdz

10:48:46: Update failed, simulator paused.

I see a pdex.bin and .dll file inside the zip archive, but no pdz. Running on simulator on Linux.

Really looking forward to this one, so please fix ASAP! :D

Developer (1 edit)

oh interesting, I don't have a main.pdz because it's written in C. :
edit: are you sure that was an error for my game?

Yep, so turns out you can't play games on another platform (between Windows/Linux/Mac) when compiled in C for simulator... :D I got the device on hand now so will be giving it a try!!
