How does your game meet GBJam's theme?
Accidentally jettisoned from your space station, your ship is leaking O2, your fuel is being consumed much faster than usual, and your radar is dying with every use. Not only that, but merchants may not be what they seem, and when you do find a good one, there's a chance that the goods you purchase may be tainted. It's not been a lucky day for you it seems. Get home, by any means necessary.

Pretty fun little adventure. I was not able to make it home safely, but I enjoyed making several attempts at it. I thought the dynamic music was a nice touch here, but the collisions made it a bit tougher than I'd expected. It might be worth revisiting these to see if you can shrink them down a bit or clear the collision boxes sooner when an enemy ship is defeated—I found myself getting knocked into bits even after landing a clear shot on an enemy ship. Thanks for making and sharing your game!

It was fun to play. The stars parallax felt a bit strange and also sometimes I believe I reach the end of one of the parallax layers. The enemies sometimes come to fast and it is difficult to get rid of them, but since there is no penalty for firing I keep firing all the time while moving just in case. I liked the sonar mechanic to get to your destination in some way.

I’m having a ton of fun with this game, and I love space games. Great game!!!

Developer

Awesome! Thanks for checking it out.

That was neat! Quite rough around the edges, but competent. The graphics are readable, and I like the parallax effect of flying around space. The soundtrack has an epic quality to it; I especially like the battle music!

This might only be a problem on my end, but the music is sometimes really loud, immediately peaking the audio above 0.0 dB. It starts being this loud on the title screen, and will randomly become that loud during gameplay.

All-in-all, good work! Congratulations on the submission!

Hey, congrats! You're the first one (and only so far) to finish the game!

Yeah I think I may have left the volume at default level on most tracks, definitely my mistake. I didn't have a whole lot of time to work on the jam and it was my first time doing the music by myself, so that took extra time as well.

Thanks for checking it out and leaving the great feedback

If anyone's interested (I put some hidden leaderboard trackers in place):

- I see 28 deaths so far in the this unlucky bit of space.

- Looks like no one has made it home yet after your mission is updated. Can you make it back?

A really cool entry you have here! As noted by other players, I thought you did great with the controls which made the game more fun to play. I also wasn't a fan of the debris, but it wasn't a deal breaker or anything. This game had some nice GB Soul to it, too. Overall, some good work here!

Thanks for the feedback and checking it out!

Cool game! Ship controls felt crisp, and the radar aspect was interesting. Some more feedback on hits/damage (both ways) would be nice, the debris confused me too. I actually liked that the camera went behind the ship a bit, because it gave a balance of moving fast vs being careful. The parallax background was really effective, and losing a crew member triggered my FTL PTSD way too hard D: The enemy ships also felt the right amount of scary with their angled approach and quick speed. My biggest criticism is that I wasn’t sure what to do once I got to my ship. I looked at the spoiler after I died to clear it up.

All in all, this is a great entry. It feels like a retro game, has a cool premise, and it definitely incorporates unluckiness. Nice work!

Developer

Thanks for the awesome feedback! I wavered on giving more guidance to the enemy ship but kind of wanted to also have that little bit of exploration necessary. Probably for a jam game I should defer to making it a bit more straightforward next time. Glad that you encountered the market mechanics, but unlucky that your fuel exploded. Thanks for playing!

I like the ship's movements. I really recreate the GB atmosphere (less rigid, of course).

However, I don't really see the connection with the theme, but your game is cool !

Developer (1 edit)

Thanks for checking it out! The theme is in a few places: situation of being randomly ejected from station, also the merchants are completely randomized (some are enemy bases) and there are possibilities that your purchases will backfire based off of RNG. Placement of enemies, asteroids, markets, and stations are also randomized each playthrough.

I like how the screen zooms out a bit when an enemy is in range makes fighting them easier. Not the biggest fan of how you still take damage from enemies after they die. But I still had fun with this game good work.

Developer(+1)

Thanks for the feedback! I was thinking of the 'debris' still being able to damage as it moves across the ship, but I think I'll be changing that in the future. Glad you noticed the zoom change, I wanted to make sure you had more spatial awareness when needing to dodge the ships.

Nice game. It's sometimes hard to properly fight enemies as you need to go forward to aim at them, so they close in rather fast. Of course that's just what you would expect on an unlucky day as this :D

Developer

Yeah I debated changing up the combat but I kind of ended up liking how you have to give up a bit of space in order to deal with an enemy. That's where my 'debris' damage thought initially came from (stop and turn to fire, but then needing to still run away before the debris hits you), but seems like that hasn't come across as I thought.

The controls feel really good and add a lot to the game. The only thing I'm missing is a looping map, but other than that, it's a great entry. Congrats!

Developer(+1)

Thanks for checking it out! Yeah, looping map was on my extended goals list but sadly wasn't able to put much time into all this during the jam. I'll definitely work on figuring that out.

Cool game. Nice to see ship controls that are snappy and responsive. The camera has a hard time catching up to the ship, but solid entry overall!

Thanks for the feedback!

It's a solid little game for sure.

I did get a little frustrated when an enemy ship that I had destroyed still seemed to damage me when a couple pixels of its death animation clipped me since I figured the threat had been eliminated.

I also found it a bit weird when I reached my ship and then hit the "edge of space" since I figured the entire game just looped the space, but that's more of a context issue where people don't think something as typically infinite as space has a border of any kind.

Developer (1 edit) (+1)

Yeah I debated removing the 'debris' damage earlier on, wasn't sure how it would be received. Probably should have done that. The looping aspect is something I wanted to do, but didn't end up having the time to figure it out. Next jam, a looping map will be on my to-do list radar. Thanks for checking it out.

Hey everyone! Yet another fun jam. I did not get nearly enough time to work on this one as I'd usually put in, but still had a good amount of fun and I'm happy with the little game I got finished. Looking forward to seeing what you all have put together!!!
