Ghool (Fish Team)

Correlation to theme
I designed this character as a mini Rhythm Heaven game.
I imagine that the difficulty increases with each phase and therefore the signature changes.
With each change of signature, there is a half-tone modulation.
The orchestration is funky because Ghool is so cool: Wurlizer, funky guitar, and of course theremin for the spooky aspect.
There are two versions of the music, one with Ghool singing and one without.

OH MY GOD DUDE! That's so freaking awesome! Where do I start...?

The instrumentation. Flawless! The theremin/synth at the start, the hiphop "cool" drums, "funky guitar", and of course the vocals! You probably used some kind of vocaloid software for it, curious to hear which one. Not only are some vocals refreshing (and I would guess would increase your rating overall, especially if done well using vocaloids etc.), but it fits the guy so well since he looks like a rapper / dancer.

The stairs. I noticed immediately when you switched: you switch rhythm and go for a classical "Take Five" 3+3+2+2 rhythm. And I love these little intermezzo's like the one at 1:25. You lose track of the rhythm and just get lost in the blasts. And the whole step upwards (I think at least that is what it is - I can't hear intervals well) makes it immediately clear that we are at the start of a measure again. So nice! The transition at 1:47 is so sweet too! I also really like the way you incorporate the vocals in the rhythms too. The placements of the "ain't afraid of me" for example are so interesting in a 5/4 rhythm. I want more vocals in odd times now xD

And the video man.... Did you draw and edited this all yourself? Really impressive. I would LOVE to see this in a Rhythm Heaven game, I'd play the fuck out of that.

I'm very glad I got to hear some of your songs again. It's been a long time since I last joined a jam with you. I remember you took a little break from jams to work on personal projects. I hope I'll see you again in the future, perhaps in some future jams. Have a good one, friend :)

Hey, it's great to hear your work again! I hope you've been doing well. As always, amazing stuff, this is so perfect for a Rhythm Heaven game. Aside from the obviously great composition and quality, I especially love your re-creation of how the rhythms get trickier and harder to grasp, just like the games. Even the video captures that Rhythm Heaven vibe so well. Awesome job, and thanks for sharing!

Hey! Nice to see you again at a jam! I'm going to listen to your composition.

Thanks for your comment.

Sounds like you decided to experiment, and that’s really cool! I liked the noticeable funk elements and the overall vibe. But honestly, without the lead I wouldn’t have guessed it’s a ghost theme. Other than that – everything is awesome!

Developer

You're right, I didn't push the “spooky” aspect too much because it seemed cooler to me than “ghost.” So I didn't use minor chords or tragic modulations.

Thank you for your constructive comment, I appreciate your honesty.

now that's one funky song, incredible work! it would fit really well in a rhythm heaven game

Thank you !

After the jam, I'll rename my YouTube video “Rhythm Heaven - Lost Track” to attract traffic (and a ton of haters).

good call, gotta go with the algorithm heh. although why don't you post it in youtube music as well, maybe that could attract traffic too?

10/10. I would buy an album full of tracks like this one. you touched a very inner part of myself, as my main genre is funky, so this comes as a perfect track. Not only that, it's superbly composed, the main idea of the ghost singing is fantastic (I'm so SPOO-KY!), it's totally related to the theme of the jam, it's catchy, well mixed and produced, and the outstanding video you did made me really jealous.

Fantastic work, you can have a great career if you keep on keeping on.

Developer

Thanks for the comment, I love funk too and really enjoyed working on this track.

I'm really glad you like it.

I don't know where I could have a career, but I wouldn't mind it.

This is so funky and fun! The Wurlizer is an easy favorite instrument for me, but the combination with the theremin definitely sells the “cool electric ghost” vibe, making this perfectly fitting for the theme. I love the idea of using the time signature changes with modulation as moving up to the next difficulty. 5/4 seems like it would be more challenging than 6/4, but you (obviously) thought of this and you made the 6/4 section much more challenging. Great attention to detail! While your music is super impressive, I also have to comment on the Youtube video. That is seriously impressive, firstly to create so many versions of Ghool, then to add so many transitions between the different versions to match the lyrics. This is wonderful - thank you for sharing!

Also this is random, but I am curious how you pronounce your username? I’ve been saying “sel-key-OH-nay” in my head for years, but I realized it could be “SEL-key-own” or “SEL-key-WUN” or maybe something completely different and I’m just curious. :)

Sometimes you notice details that I placed there unconsciously, but in this case, your interpretation of my music is all the more remarkable. Yes, when I placed the ghost's lines, I thought about how difficult it would be to make it more intense at each stage.

It's incredible that you noticed that while listening to the music.

You can pronounce my name: Cell-Key-On

Submitted(+1)

Oh thank you! I've been saying it wrong for a while, but I'm really glad I know the correct way now!

Developer

It's the name of a character I made up when I was playing TTRPG, and I used it by default on the internet. I didn't think it would be difficult to pronounce in languages other than my own because, basically, it wasn't meant to be pronounced at all.

So that's the story behind it :)

Submitted

Oh, it seems I pronounced it wrong as well! I pronounced it as "Cell-Key-Own". Now I am finally sure :D

Oh man I love this!

Having it be a rhythm heaven game is perfect and you nailed the rhythm heaven vibes perfectly!

Big fan Big fan!

Thank you!

I'm glad you like it (and to know that you also like Rhythm Heaven).
