How did you choose to implement the Theme: Theatre of the Grotesque?
I took inspiration from Stanley V Longman three syndromes that define the Theatre of Grotesque, mainly the 'marionette' syndrome (characters being manipulated to take actions agains their will, even if they can see the absurdity of the situation), and the 'multiple reality' syndrome (two or more planes of reality that shouldn’t be able to coexist but do, in this case a theatre play that is also the reality of the characters/actors).

I wanted to try and make the player feel the absurdity of the situation, while being unable to do anything about it except watch it unfold and be a participant, since the game can’t move without the players input.
Aside that the use of masks with exaggerated expressions, and tried to give the actors one dimension to their roles.

While reading about Theatre of the Grotesque I really liked the idea of how, quote
“It uses comedy, specifically physical comedy, and irony, to frame its existential questioning.”, which is why the weird humor in the game, hopefully.

Did you implement any of the optional Bonus Challenges, and if so, which ones?
Body Horror: There are several dead bodies in different states of dismemberment. Not as many as I initially planned tho.

Animal Masks: I have animals with human masks, not sure if that counts. Originally the Audience had animal masks but I didn't had time to implement those.

Did you create your game in RPG Maker?

Yes

First of all, I'd like to mention how much I liked the art and the general vibes!  The characters looked really good, some of them were adorable (specially The Fool and the Innocent) , although I do have a little complaint: the lack of feet movement. It definitely works for the fool, but it looked a bit weird on The Hero. I guess it could have been due to time constraints, considering it's a jam, or maybe it was a stylistic choice. In that case, I guess it's subjective. Feet issue aside, the rest of the animations looked really good!

I think you did an amazing job making this game feel like an actual play and the theme of the jam was implemented in a perfect way. It feels like you either know a lot about the topic or you did a lot of research, and that's amazing and something I really appreciate.

The gameplay was definitely on the weaker side, and I wished there was a bit more, maybe puzzles (theather themed puzzles would have been awesome), but it doesn't necessarily mean it makes the experience less enjoyable. I geniunely enjoyed guiding the fool through these beautiful stages (some of the visuals were reaaaalllyy good).

While I didn't find the game scary, there were 2 particular events that were quite unsettling: seeing the fate of the hero, and the arrival of the antagonist.

I do understand that you couldn't implement many of your ideas due to time constraints (totally understandable), and it's also a demo, so it wouldn't be fair to be too harsh and critical of certain aspects I mentioned such as the lack of puzzles or feet movement. I also appreciated the "fake new game" and the talking eye.

But overall, I think this is a really solid entry, with beautiful visuals, an excellent implementation of the theme and a simple but really nice little story that definitely shows your knowledge about the topic.

Congratulations! You did a great job! : D

Sorry for the very late reply, things got very busy once the jam ended.

Just wanted to say thank you very much for the comment and feedback! (even if Im 3 months late)

I'm happy to hear the positive comments on the art, I decided to do it different than I usually do and it's nice seeing the positive response. Also how I managed to make the game feel on tune wiht the jam theme, I had heard about the topic before but went and researched a lot to have a better understantement so Im very happy that showed up in the final result.

The sketchiness of the sprites was intentional but the lack of movement when walking was due running out of time, idealy they will all have more movement once I can go back to working on it.

I do agree it's missing on the horror factor, specially after playing the rest of the jam submissions I do want to lay more heavily on that once I keep working on this project.

Again thanks a lot for all the feedback :D

if this is what you put together on short notice then I'm very excited to see the full thing! As a preview it had me hooked for whatever story this is leading to. Aesthetic and animation is fantastic. Does seem to be a bit buggy in the graveyard scene- most of the graves weren't interactable until I walked back and forth to them repeatedly.

Thank you very much for the feedback and nice words!
I’ve been a tiny bit worried with how incomplete and unpolished it came out (even if being a jam its normal) so it’s nice hearing even with that I manage to caught some interest.

I will check the graveyard, thanks for the headsup, I rushed that scene on the last day so I am not surprised something bugged out.

The story was a bit confusing, maybe i just didn't read it right...

Some of the doors are also a bit for the hidden side, I think you could add some sort of visual indicator like you did for the items, I think that was a good call!

Visual Wise I like it a whole bunch, the color marker rough sketches give it a very unique look. The character designs are also very nice, I really liked the fool design, jester boy best boy.

Another thing you might want to add in the future is a character portrait or face near the dialogue boxes, it helps to follow the flow of who's talking way easier, or you could maybe change the colour of the dialogue box according to who's speaking.

Good work overall, Nicely done, hope to see more of it in the future!

(EDIT: I FORGOT TO MENTION, I really liked how you used the theme, most games I played so far are about someone going into a freaky theater/carnival, you guys actually just made the whole setting be a play, cool!)

BUG:

- I don't know how I achieved this, but in the room you encounter the hero for the first time, I think when you spawn in the room if you walk to the left, you will be unable to leave the room to the left, and will also be unable to proceed through the right because a dialogue saying "Wrong Way" will always pop up;

Developer(+1)

Thank you for the feedback, I haven't been getting any comments so I really appreciate it!

The story is meant to be confusing and weird, so that’s alright, hopefully once I finish the full thing it will be more obvious that is not meant to be fully understood.

I did plan to add character busts for the dialogues but ran out of time, but it’s nice to see that’s something that would be liked or wanted.

I’m really happy to hear you liked how I used the theme and the visual part of the game, I was lowkey worried about it, the theme was very planed but the visuals I had to rush them cause I ran out of time

.

Concerning the bug, when you enter the Arena (Hero’s room) you are not meant to be able to leave from either side unless you interact with the Hero (and afterwards you can only leave from the right) hence the “Wrong way” window if you try to leave.

I am not sure if you meant that or if still after interacting with the Hero, it won’t let you leave, cause then that is a problem I’ll have to fix. Otherwise it is on purpose that you are not allowed to go back.

It's like before even getting to talk to hero, is when you spawn in the room, if you walk to the left you will be sorta stuck between the left side of the map, and the events that pop up  saying that is the wrong way(I think that is what's happening).

Developer(+1)

Oh I need to check that, you shouldn’t be able to exit on the left, but you shouldn’t be getting stuck either.

It's in this spot, i am not sure how it triggered but I was holding left key during transition, might be the cause. The player will be behind that curtain and if I try to go right it will trigger the event.

Developer(+1)

Yeah no that’s a bug, still not sure how you managed to get on that side of the trigger, you should be on the right of it.

On the bright side thank you for finding that, I’m going to stress test the rest of the transport player triggers to avoid this happening.

You're welcome, best of luck, i'm sure you'll figure it out!
