Played this a while back but completely forgot to leave a rating! It's a great game! Really liked the art style and it fit the theme well. Nice work!
Appreciated!
First off, great title! I totally loved the art and overall presentation. I also liked the simplicity of interacting with entities by walking into them.
Gameplay-wise, I felt like the flow never quite clicked for me. Either the player character moves too slowly, or the timer expires too quickly, making it feel like you don't really have a chance to evaluate enough graves. It felt very luck-based to me and hard to apply a specific strategy.
Instead of a short time limit, I would have preferred a longer limit with another form of pressure applied, such as a roaming enemy or enemies that you have to avoid while you dig. Also, it feels bad to accidentally potion an empty spot, and then watch as your time wastes away. An easy way to prevent that would be to make it so potions only work on graves,
Overall, I enjoyed deciphering the cause of death for each grave to assign potions, and the need for quick-decision making. I also really liked the retro vibes, environment art, and character designs.
Kudos to you for a unique and creative entry!
Thanks for playing! And I completely agree with the critiques. Because I didn't have time to add more complexity like guards and mini games to apply potions, I leaned more into the slower more deliberate gameplay. If I had an extra couple days I definitely would have liked to add more enemies. Thanks for taking the time to leave detailed feedback.
This hit me right in the nostalgia. GBA is one of, if not my favorite consoles of all time and this game was hitting all the right vibes. The biggest critiques I can think of would be to up the movement speed to give it a more solid "arcade" vibe that it seems to be going for, in addition to some way to remember which potion is needed for what since I immediately forgot and cooked myself. Overall, great work! Thank you for sharing your game with the world!
Thanks for playing! I definitely agree with the critiques. I ended up choosing the pacing for most of the animations so that you have to be very intentional about what you do in the time limit. But I think with larger levels and faster speed the game would be a more arcadey feel. And I also didn't have enough time to add a pause menu which you could reference what the potions did. But the game page has some more details and the game is short enough that it isn't a big problem
Took me a hot second to figure out what I was doing but I think that was more on me. I really like the names and the way they kindof hint at the contents (i think??)
Well done!
Thanks for playing! And yeah I tried to make the 'artifacts' be based on the person and how they died
Fun and funny! Loved the names and causes of deaths, I scored 611!
Glad you enjoyed it! I made somewhere close to 100 names
Nice execution and pixel art!
Thank you!
Won with a score of 637, pretty fun little arcade playthrough nice job dev!! Feels very polished overall and you made great use of all the assets to put together a cohesive experience. Player on-boarding could be a little smoother as my first couple runs I was very confused on the order of operations, and it was only after reading the game page description itself that things started to click. Fun and well-packaged game, impressive stuff in just the 4 days!
Nice score! Thanks for playing!
Well done!
Thanks for playing!
YESSS I love the GBA style, graphics and music are absolutely great! The concept is pretty simple but very well executed. Good job :)
Thanks for playing!
Yoaaah!! GBA MA MAN! really loved what you pulled off with this one! The pixel art and Game Boy vibe hit perfectly, and the pacing feels super tight for a jam entry. Music blends nicely with the visuals too, really sells the mood.
Great work man, solid execution all around!
Thanks! Glad you enjoyed it!
I love the concept and music! Excellent Job! Rated ♥
Thanks for playing!
Fun and well implemented concept! Congrats!
It would mean a lot if you could rate my game too! https://fernando-ferreira.itch.io/death
That music was ROCKIN! also the Gameboy visuals were very nice. I will say also when I'm apolying through games rarely do I keep playing it til I win but this was a game that had me going! very good entry.
Thanks for playing! I tried to aim the gameplay loop to be nice and quick. Gotta keep the players attention
Lovely art, tight gameplay, funny gravestones (Baker died of bread, really? :)). My only nitpick is the gravestone font doesn't match the rest of the game. Otherwise well done, a very solid entry!
Yeah I had an issue getting the default font to fit in my textbox. Thanks for playing
Hey, the artist for Spikes & Switches, here!
Aww, I wish there was music but oh well.
I like the idea you used for the theme. Every jam submission seems to have their theme involve the player dying, while this theme does something unique and involves the enemies by playing around them.
overall this was a fine game.
Thanks for playing! But there definitely is music and sound effects! Try checking your audio settings to see if it is outputting wrong
Ahh I see my bad, thank you so much.
very cool! loved the gba theme. maybe could've used a tiny grace period after digging up a monster so it isn't always a hit, but even so, really enjoyed it!
I wanted to make more mini games for applying potions and digging but didn't have time. So right now if you dont apply the right potion you get hit when you dig it up. Thanks for playing!
Very spooky. Had a hard time knowing which potion I should use sometimes, but besides that very nice!
Thanks for playing!
very nice
Thanks for playing!
Super cool. i love the art style!
Thanks for playing!
Super fun! Lovee the gameboy aesthetic. Once I understood how to play it got engaging real fast. Amazing job!
Yeah it is a nice and quick gameplay loop so you start a new run immediately! Thanks for playing!
