what am i supposed to do now? I looked up a walk-through and it said there should have been a battle after i crossed the portal, but it didn't happen.

I was able to progress accidentally by exiting while inside the room and then loading the autosave but it was just because of an accident.
I have had the same issue
I'm looking into the root cause but I did find a work around. If you save once you are stuck and re-load it will fix it.
