Portals feedback...harsh feedback incoming.

Howdy! Harsh feedback incoming.

So, I played around with portals a bit trying to make something for the jam.

I watched the tutorials by Moof to get a basic understanding of how it works first.

First I want to say, I like the idea of an easy to use, browser based platform to make games easily. But my feedback as a developer is, I don't think this platform is ready to be used by devs at all. Compared to Unreal or Unity, I found it horrible to work with.

Because of this, I think you'll struggle to get many serious entries for the jam, if any at all.

It's a shame because the theme of the jam is appealing to me and the prize pool is quite insane. But even for 10K, I'm not sure I want to put more time into this platform.

I guess the prize pool is sponsored by Portals - why force jammers to use this platform otherwise. And so maybe, instead of an entry, I could give my personal feedback. I warn you, it's harsh, but it's how I felt using Portals:

The camera movement is odd. Moving around feels terrible. Might just be that I'm not used to it tho. There's a lack of options and basic things are missing, like snapping,  no ctrl-z, you can't seem to make a first person camera, I couldn't change the character at all past the pre-made options. Some things were just not working at all - adding assets sometimes gets stuck on a sci-fi cube and some larger objects could not be deleted once added, even when using the ''delete all furniture'' button. Some keyboard buttons are strange - pressing escape simply deletes the object you were editing, and as previously said you can't ctrl-z, which is very frustrating. You also can't place spotlights in the air (which you would always want to do), only on other objects.

Etc. etc. I could go on but you get the idea.

Still. I wish you the best for the jam, and hope other people will have more patience than I did and deliver cool stuff.

But if you get very little entries, it's probably that others also struggled with the platform!

This is really helpful feedback!

Everything you commented on is actually possible on Portals (including undo). Your comment that they are not possible is a good indicator that we need to improve UX to make it more clear how this stuff is done!

Appreciate you giving the platform a try and this feedback is awesome for helping us improve the platform in its capabilities.

If you want to give Portals another try I am happy to hop in and help out and do a deeper dive on what is causing some of your other issues.

Hey! Thanks for the reply.

I think more in-depth tutorial videos might help out a lot!

I tried the game they made (Dollmaker I think it was called) and saw that a lot was possible. The platform might need more documentation, more tutorials (if there was more, I didn't see it).

People want to make all sorts of different games and if it's not clear how to do it...they'll just go back to Unreal, Unity, Godot, etc.

And thanks for the help offer, I'm pretty busy this week however and the jam ends soon. But if I have time to give it an other shot I'll let you know!

P.s. I have a crappy internet connection right now, it might not have helped with things not loading, not sure.
