Crowdfunding Pitch
Crowdfunding goal: $5000 USD
Short summary: Two people. One birthday. One cake. One magical girl. Melia (Lia) and Maria (Mary) have had to share everything in life, even down to their magical girl persona. What happens when tragedy strikes, and their shared magical girl form is all that’s keeping one of them alive?
Tagline: All magical girls are dangerous. That’s the truth.
What makes it similar to other visual novels: It’s a short horror visual novel that combines psychological and gory horror. It sits within the magical girl genre, and is about a pair of identical twins.
What makes it stand out: Horror often utilises identical twins as objects of fear. This story subverts this trope by having the player take on the perspective of Lia, who must contend with two major conflicting horrors:
Herself and her sister Mary being perceived as one person/unit, and struggling to find and assert their individuality outside of that.
Slowly experiencing the loss of Mary, who is her family, her closest friend, and someone around whom she defines herself.
Lia and Mary are fleshed out, complex characters, rather than objects of fear.
Who is buying into my crowdfunding campaign: Fans of the dark magical girl genre. Those with investment in unusual, character focused horror stories. As a female-focused game in the magical girl genre it would probably have a particular appeal to a female and/or female-identifying audience.
What will the selected funds pay for: Development of additional chapters (writing, art, coding, more fully animated character poses). More music and the inclusion of voice acting. Crowdfunding rewards tier administration and merchandising, as required for the listed tiers.
Example reward tiers: $2 - Magical Lemon and Lime phone and desktop backgrounds.
$5 - A digital copy of the full game upon release, and all previous tier rewards.
$10 - A digital copy of the full game, your name given thanks in the credits, and all previous tier rewards.
$25 - A short digital artbook, and all previous tier rewards
$50 - Stickers! And all previous tier rewards.
$250 - A piece of custom CG art OR an acrylic character standee of a character of your choosing, plus all previous tier rewards.
$500 - A signed physical artbook and all previous tier rewards. Two acrylic character standees of a character of your choosing. Includes all previous tier rewards.
$1000 - A signed physical artbook and a piece of custom CG art and four acrylic character standees. Includes all previous tier rewards.
Why would these rewards excite backers: Being a part of the development process, getting a copy of the game for cheaper than the price of release, getting a behind the scenes peek, merch.
How long would rewards take to deliver: The game is not intended to be particularly long, I’d estimate around 5-6 chapters and would aim to finish it by early next year. Other rewards would be developed for distribution by the game’s release date.
Which rewards would people most likely seek out: A copy of the game itself would be the most important reward. However as with many kickstarter campaigns, some may see more value in their chances to see behind the scenes, to feel involved with the development process, or to get merch.
Who’s on the team: I’m a solo dev. I’ve worked on teams before as well as previous solo dev projects and I think one of my assets as a developer is that I’ve had time and experience to improve my skills and my understanding of visual novel production. Additionally, as a fan of the medium and the indie dev community, I’ve learned a lot from watching and supporting successful crowdfunding campaigns and games.
I had the chance to work with the very talented Adelaide Ellicott, who produced music for the jam. If I was to crowdfund a full version of the game, I’d love to work with her again providing her schedule allows.
What is my story as a creator: I’m an avid reader and writer who thinks fiction should be weirder, and who hopes to swap out tired tropes for genuine heart. I love the opportunity that the medium of visual novels can provide to tell unique stories. The warmth, talent, and creativity of the vn dev community is something that I greatly admire, and I’m proud to work amongst them.
Why might backers support me outside of this specific visual novel: Well, I’m always interested in learning new skills and improving upon the ones I have. I have an interest in a diverse array of genres, but believe I am capable of bringing a unique style and perspective to anything I work on.
Any past track record of crowdfunding: No.
If I could partner with any other creator or project for crowdfunding: The visual novel dev community has a lot of incredibly cool and talented creators within it. I’d particularly love to work with anyone who crosses over between the general vn dev community and the otome dev community.
How would I approach cross-promoting and help uplift the other creators in the bundle: Following them, sharing their posts on social media, and doing my own posts praising their games would be a good start. From my understanding, the best thing to do is to get involved in the community and to be a supportive presence.
