Wow, I am seriously blown away! This feels more like an early access release for a complete game than just a simple game jam. This is such a cool and creative idea - the environment, the voice acting, the gameplay and puzzle system... Did I already say the part where I was blown away? I admit, I'm not  usually a huge fan of puzzle games (mostly because I am very bad at them), so this might have been a bit of a hard sell for me - but the voice acting and theme very quickly won me over.

I admit, one thing that did initially throw me off was the voice of the protagonist. It wasn't bad, whatsoever, to be clear - the voice-acting was all great. Just from the game's advertising and the initial title sequence,  I was expecting a bit more of a spooky, mysterious, slow-burn experience, and I did have one guilty moment early on where I wasn't sure if I was supposed be laughing or not. Obviously, it soon became clear that the sarcastic delivery was intentional, and I could fully lean in and embrace this game's great humor and charm, and I really ended up liking it. Not exactly a criticism,  just thought you might like to hear what my thought process was like as someone going in completely blind with no context to any of the creators' previous work.

I did have one small bug where sometimes, my Quest 2 controllers would unexpectedly disappear and stop receiving input mid-playthrough, despite me being in the middle of actively using them. I'm about 90% sure that it might have been an issue with my headset, but did want to make a note of it just in case.

But seriously, I'm so impressed by everything you accomplished with this project. I almost wish I could have been there to look behind the scenes and watch how the three of you all came together. It seems like you had a ton of fun working on this project, and I had a ton of fun playing it. I'll definitely be looking forward to the next one!

Well the three stars of the jams have teamed up and knocked it out of the park. This is literally just a full features mini-game. It's not even a jam game. Your use of the theme is incredibly unique and fun. Your team even put in the details of the backgrounds for every single ancestor!

Some Notes :

  • The buttons for opening the lockbox were a bit off. I'm not sure how you implemented the buttons, but they would trigger both too quickly (could have used a delay between each input) and when the hand wasn't close to it. I've always struggled to find a good solution to button pressing in VR, so I'd like to hear your approach here.
  • Super nitpicky, but the hands of the ancestors would come through the mirror. Not sure if this was intentional or just a visual bug.
  • I'm not sure if you used Inverse Kinematics for tracking or not, but the wrist would get twisted if you moved the remote too much in a certain direction. I'm wondering if you would be able to twist the forearm while tracking movement to prevent it.
  • I say don't let me skip dialogue! You all worked too hard to have your voice acting skipped and gameplay skipped! At first I thought the audio was bugging out, but I noticed it was a feature you added in. I say, let the audience listen to your ancestors trying to get wild with you for "idle intercourse"! (or was it copulation? Whatever. It was hilarious)

The amount of detail in this game is astounding. The lighting is great, the voice acting (I'm assuming mostly Beard... all Beard?) was funny and spot on, and the mechanics were inventive.

Ian, Ameripon and Beard, I really cannot thank you enough for joining these jams. Your submissions always spark inspiration in others and show off unique ways we can use XR in game development.

Oh! And what assets and tools did you use? I would love to see it posted somewhere so others can use them too.

Happy Halloween!

Thanks for playing Shrimp! I'm sure Ian could go into more depth about the details of why the hands get funky and the lockbox buttons. Originally, the lockbox was very different and there were some other steps involved with a small cupboard that is visible off to the side in the banker scene. Inside that cupboard was a very different safe lockbox but there just wasn't enough time to get all that working, so Ian swooped in and made the current lockbox which he made and got working in just a couple of hours?! Crazy!

An after thought after playing it through we should have mapped the dialogue skip to the primary button but we weren't about to go and rebuild the game with a fix in the last few hours with the chance of breaking something for the jam.

The only 3D assets used are the chair asset, character model and Hurricane hands. Then under the hood only Salsa Lipsync for the character speaking. Everything else was bespoke, created by Ian the Shader Master! And all the environments and objects were modeled by me in Blender. The fancy subtitles and voice/story system was all Beard

This is a puzzle game, but if you get stuck there's a Walk through in the Game Page - Enjoy!
