Note: It took some time for me to get back around to finishing comments on the jam games. Pardon the late comment!

This trivia game had a really fun execution! The playful writing and tricky questions worked really well for it. Combined with the fun visuals (and the variety of styles from talented artists), it made for a novel and quite enjoyable experience!

Although on the configurable but longer-playing side, a fun detail that I noticed right away was the title screen, which reminds me of the kind of aesthetic that you might expect to see in a museum.

Well done all around!

(review based on 1.0 jam release)

solve my riddlse

to preface this review i have to admit that i’m not in the target audience of “people who know what the fuck current touhou lore is because they actually read the manga” but somehow i don’t think that really factored into my judgements lol

at its core, the gameplay is just answering riddles and trivia. you’d hope and expect that these questions would be good in that case, and my god are they ever. like i said, most of my incorrect answers were lore-related trivia, but the explanations offered after every question lead me to believe that they were perfectly reasonable questions that i just literally didn’t know. as for the more generic riddles (four legs two legs three legs or what have you), those ALSO had really fair answers! and as much as i want to kill nareko for the mount everest question, i can’t even argue with it in any way cuz it’s just a fair trick question. she got me good.

mollyco art is always a treat, so i’m glad the honor went to the character graphics you’ll see the most throughout the entire game. other random artist cameos in the different rooms were neat, but in general the art isn’t as big of a focus as the core gameplay itself. same goes for the music, they both add some nice flavor in support of the main questions. which is based! only real thing i can actually knock it for is use of theme since the deal seems to be that nareko is asking the same pool of questions to everyone rather than giving tailor-made:tm: riddles to each visitor. literally everything else ranges from damn solid to absolute peak.

now if you’ll excuse me i have to go suffer from curse of ra for having nearly as many incorrect answers as questions asked

Close enough, glad to have you back Encarta MindMaze!

I spared the pyramid and couldn't seem to ever leave after that. I guess my poor villager is cursed to forever roam the halls of the pyramid...

Neat game. I did not expect 3D from  a quiz game!

Developer (2 edits) (+2)

Hmm, it should be re-looping you for another 9 rooms before putting you back in the path to the pyramid core if you do that, although I did actually think about making a "Bad End" where choosing to spare the pyramid loops you in the maze forever, so that'd be neat too (but not intentional).

Thanks for playing!

EDIT: Oh, now I see. Sparing the Pyramid Core locks it out of its dialogue trigger, making it impossible to talk to it again. Oops! I'll push out an update that fixes it real quick (1.0b)

Accidentally backed out without having saved (maybe add an autosave feature?), and while I know very little touhou and so got a lot of those questions wrong, this game actually made me start to like riddles? Which is kind of insane given I usually hate them because of how vague they are in most media, but consolidating them to a multiple choice helps a *lot*.

Developer(+1)

Oh, sorry about that. There is normal saving, but I dislike 'forcing' auto-saves on people which is why I didn't implement them. I might add it in the future as an option though.

Glad you liked my quiz style: it's based on Microsoft Encarta 96's Mindmaze, which let you do 2 attempts at a 4-choice question, and with no real punishment for failing them. The only thing it didn't have was explanations for the answers, which I felt were very important for a game about knowledge and why I added them in this game. It's important to explain why the answer is what it is, after all...well, except for some of the few free-win riddles I put in, of course, hahaha.

Thanks for playing!

That's fair, and I'd argue it's less of an issue when it's a game as an application, so part of that is on me for playing specifically the webapp version.

And I didn't think about it before, but yeah the explanations were also something that made me enjoy the riddles more: Even if I got it wrong I at least learned the reason why, and the dialog was usually pretty charming to boot.

MindMaze ’95 was my JAM back in the day! my 486 would take like minutes to just load the game let alone each question lol

I kept going from remembering obscure pc98 lore to "I don't read what's dolls in paradise". Fantastic trivia definitely gonna look into the books

Time to brush up on FW lore.

The 3D modeled Touhous along with the ones with unique interactions were fun to meet, especially Seija. The menus look and feel amazing.

The mount Everest question made me lose my fucking mind fuck you this was fantastic. These nuts Curse of Ra
