"Guide" to help people who are new to game jams.

I've decided to create this "guide" to help people who are new to GDevelop game jams. Hopefully, someone will find this useful.

1. Read the game jam rules!

I know a lot of people will find this instruction a little dumb, but I've noticed a lot people in previous game jams either make a game disregarding the theme, submitted early, make a game with a completely different engine or even submit games the dev has made before the jam.

2. You don't need a team

While having a team isn't a bad thing, and in some cases even a good thing, sometimes being part of a team isn't something that newer devs would really benefit from. For example, I've seen a lot of users try to join or make a team without having to use a messaging service like WhatsApp or Discord. Now, while it is technically possible to just share asset files and call it a day, I can't help but imagine that the lack of communication between members would definitely hinder the progress of the games development. Another thing I have noticed in past game jams too is that a lot of teams that have been formed using the community tab of the game jam, don't tend to submit any game. Not to say that's the case with all devs, but most cases, in my experience, don't tend to actually submit any games.

Now, that being said, most of what I say only really applies to teams made up of complete strangers to each other. If you know your teammates personally, than working in a team with each other become infinitely easier.

3. Making your game solo isn't really that hard

If your struggling with making code or assets for a game, there are plenty of templates and free assets, in GDevelop itself and on itch, that you can use to help the development of your game go much quicker. Maybe go and watch some tutorials on how to implement a certain mechanic, or maybe ask on the GDevelop forums for help or feedback regarding your game.

4. Don't spam advertise your game

All this does is make you look desperate, and it will probably deter some people of playing your game

5. Do not use AI to create assets for your game, especially the thumbnail

This just makes your game look cheap. You could have made an absolute masterpiece but if you use AI for the thumbnail, people are going to assume your game is a load of garbage.

6. Assume you're not going to win the prize

At the end of the day, this game jam is about having fun, not just winning. If you're competing for the sake of winning, than really what is the point of joining. Also, for anyone new, while this may sound disappointing, you are most likely not going to win anything. There are just some people who are going to make much better games than you, but that's fine, at the end of the day, it's all about competing and doing the best you can (I swear this sounds like the moral of a Disney Channel show).

And that's it, if anyone else has their own guidelines, than feel free to reply to this with them.

The AI thumbnails were a huge thing last jam

I really don’t know why people settle for AI thumbnails. They look like hot garbage. They rarely represent what the game is actually like. You could honestly just slap the game title on top of a screenshot and it would make a better first impression.

Well I'd say around that time AI usage was a novelty which is why so many people used them

Thankd for the  guide!

Pushing this yet again, don't be the guy who uploads their game early, sacrificing the quality of the game just so it can be the first one.
