Nice work! I played through a couple times to see the different dialog and was surprised how quickly I got used to the controls, thank you for gamepad! Once I got to level 30, I decided to call it because my explosive peircing wobble shotgun was just too good. I’m still not sure why I’d wait for the perfect time to upgrade. The only other ultra minor suggestion would be have adjustable text speed, I prefer seeing it all at once and missed a couple choices because I was impatient.

Developer

Yeah for sure, I knew adjustable speed and skippable text were important, but this jam really helped me realize just how important they are, probably not worth leaving out even with the time constraints. Thanks so much for playing through! Hope the different dialogue options were interesting enough to justify those replays for you haha. And the only reason for that line about waiting to upgrade is because some of the upgrades like pierce shot and explosive shot (and wobble shot a bit, especially without shotgun to go with it) are pretty bad early on and can make the early levels way more difficult. I think that's the main reason there were difficulties and difficulty spikes for some players. I don't think it was communicated clearly enough though haha. Appreciate the detailed comment and feedback!

FWIW, I think most jams, including this one, allow boilerplate/template code. It’s 100% worth it to build up your own starter project and/or use an existing template. In fact there’s an “official” wild jam template from maaack: https://godotengine.org/asset-library/asset/2703 and I published the one I use: https://github.com/paco-orwin/godot-starter-cookiecutter I actually need to update mine because I started a skeletal dialog system for this exact reason, get a all those ergonomics for free.

Very cool idea / mechanics! The dialogue was fun, and I liked those in-between moments because they felt like a nice break from the craziness of each wave. The style of game isn't something I usually play, and I found it difficult to master the controls and defeat the waves (which might also be a skill issue or unfamiliarity with the genre on my part).

Even so, there's a lot of humor and charm here, and I appreciated the tone of the dialogue. Nicely done!!

Developer

Not a skill issue, don't worry :) I wasn't quite able to get the early levels easy enough in time. Balancing is super difficult! And always nice to see a dialogue enjoyed! I think it's probably about 50/50 at this point lmao

Submitted(+1)

I liked the mechanic with the shield and having to shoot through the different colours to hit your target. the only thing I found a little bit too much was all of the dialogue (and being called a nitwit 😂) but maybe that's just me. Overall a nice game!

Developer(+1)

Being called a nitwit really is personal preference, isn't it? I'll have to include a nitwit-less accessibility option in my next game, lmao. Happy you were still able to enjoy the gameplay! :)

Submitted(+1)

The color shield was a really cool game mechanic, the dialogue was funny, and the upgrade system made each playthrough more interesting because I could experiment with different builds. Unfortunately I don't have a game pad at the moment so I played on KBM, but I still enjoyed it even though it was a bit awkward feeling, I could imagine it feeling much more natural with dual stick on a game pad. Nice work!

Developer(+1)

Thanks for playing! I do love the color shield, lots of fun and there's def more to work with and experiment around with a mechanic like this than I even explored. Sorry about not getting the KBM controls quite there in time 🙏 Glad you could still enjoy it though :)

By far the most fun game mechanic. I actually feel bad for the enemies — they’re just too adorable!

A cute enemy approaching,
‘I’m sorry, little one…’
before moving to their matching color.

Equal parts hilarious and heartbreaking...

Developer

They are adorable yeah, but there's also something satisfying about killing hordes of adorable enemies... :) Glad you enjoyed!

Submitted(+1)

Loved the dialogue and super cool idea with the shield and having to change the colors, really had fun with it

Developer

Awesome! Thank you so much!! :) I really did feel like I had a eureka moment when I came up with the color thing haha, I also feel like I could've pushed it a lot further than I did, but oh well, time constraints and all that. Glad you liked the story and had fun with the game!

I liked the dialogue, I love it when arcade games like this try and have a story. I liked the endless mode for when I didn’t want it aswell. the music was ok, but the sound effects and art were top notch. I love the minimalist aesthetic. I think the controls on controller are a bit finicky, but the mouse and keyboard controls are really good.

EDIT: forgot to add, i got to wave 32! kinda wish it kept getting harder, but I liked it nontheless.

Developer

Ooh 32, well done! Yeah it does keep getting harder, difficulty scales exponentially, and there's another insane spike at wave 50 (it's probably impossible lmao). I couldn't quite get those waves after you've gotten all the powerups to be difficult enough though, even with the exponential difficulty curve. I think I would've had an easier time hand-programming the early waves up until you're max build and then letting exponential difficulty go crazy for later waves. You live and you learn :)

But I'm glad you enjoyed the experience! Interesting to hear you say they were finicky on controller, I wonder what about it you found odd?

And it's always funny to see how divisive the story is for these kinds of games lmao. I think even if I'd just put in a skip dialogue button instead of the endless mode it could've helped out (especially for the cases where you die mid-story and need to go through the dialogue options again). Thanks so much for the wonderful comment and the insight!

Didn't really like a lot of dialogues, that was annoying to be honest. Games like this don't need it at all in my opinion. I love to read, but in games which I opened to read :)  Just like I said this is just my opinion.
But  anyway! This was fun to think which one to shoot first, and also this is cool to use this color thing like shield!
Also sounds and art are nice, I really like it.

Developer (1 edit)

Thanks for playing! And yeah I agree, I don't think the dialogue fits this game at all. For me this is a learning project more than anything so I was alright with putting in an element that didn't fit, because now I know how Dialogue Manager works! :D That's also why I included Endless mode. I actually meant to rename "Start" to "Story" which may have helped. At the same time, the decay theme is basically non-existent without the story, lmao. So that's part of the reason it's in there too.

I appreciate your comment a ton though and I'm glad you liked everything else!

I really really liked this one, very fun to play, the chain reaction mechanic does so much for the game

Developer

Awesome!! I'm glad it was fun :) Thanks for playing!

Submitted(+1)

Very fun! Made it to wave 20 before deciding I had enough XD

Dialogue was fun also!

Developer

Glad you enjoyed! Yeah things start getting repetitive around wave 20 for sure, I think 25 is the next difficulty spike, and another at 30. And then wave 50 is actually just impossible (I think, I nerfed it last second but I never could get past it) though I doubt anyone is going to bother going that far lol

Submitted(+1)

Cool mechanic and great job with the graphics! Dialogue was pretty fun to read

Developer

Woo!! A dialogue enjoyer, glad you liked it! I totally didn't write it all in one night at 6am :))) haha

Submitted(+1)

I didn't understand what I had to do at first, but when I did it just clicked! Pretty neat game, very fun and you can cover your whole screen with bullets 😆  Gets a bit repetitive at the end , but it's more than enough for the game jam ! Great job!!

Developer(+1)

Awesome, I'm happy it clicked! Yeah for sure it gets repetitive, especially up to the later waves. My max was wave 50 where I instantly died, lol. I spiked the difficulty a little bit up there. I think if I were to continue this game I'd add more enemy types to vary things and some boss encounters where you have to shoot them with certain series of colors to kill them. Also more upgrades!! Stuff with synergy and anti-synergy, and maybe the ability to get some money to remove upgrades you don't want from the pool... So many ideas that I couldn't quite fit in haha. Thanks for playing though! :)

Submitted(+1)

Really cool core mechanic!

Developer

I'm glad you enjoyed the idea!

Submitted(+1)

It took some time to get used to the controls (keyboard), but once I got it was smooth and fun.
Great work!

Developer

I'm so glad keyboard controls worked well enough for you to enjoy the game! Thanks for playing :)

Submitted(+1)

wow!! really fine gameplay loop you've got here :)

it was quite tough at first, till i figured out how busted it is to stack upgrades. each upgrade has a downside that sounds like a dealbreaker, but i've noticed they tend to naturally compensate for each others' downsides. even the scattershot sounds like a joke, but it's actually quite useful for increasing range. i made a beast of a build and managed to get all the way to wave 13!

i did notice though that there wasn't much point to increasing health. every time i died, it was because a group of enemies ganged up on me and i got overwhelmed. perhaps the health upgrade could instead create a barrier around you to help prevent this? one last thing, itd be nice if i could advance text with the mouse button, and scroll menus with WASD.

either way, love this game, and i'm excited to see what you do next! :D

Developer(+1)

That's awesome! I'm so glad you liked it. Balance was probably where I struggled the most, yeah. Health was something I added in early but became a bit trivial after the Life Steal upgrade, could've definitely fiddled with that. I think a barrier would be interesting for sure! I am also so sorry about the mouse not working on dialogue, it was working the version before I uploaded and I guess I forgot to check if I broke MKB controls before uploading... lol. First game jam vibes

Submitted(+1)

Good work on the art and dialogue. Pretty impressed that you managed to put in two economies for getting upgrades. I wasn't a fan of the combination of the two controls; I prefer traditional movement controls for the keyboard. Still appreciate you trying something difficult, and I get how sometimes a game can veer from the theme during development.

Nice job! I hope to see more.

Developer

Thank you so much! That means a lot. And yeah, I only had time to put in some basic keyboard controls at the end. I think something where the shield rotates towards the direction you're holding and can stop when you let go would be better. Thanks for the encouragement!

Submitted(+1)

Cool game with a very unique mechanic. Level 7 did feel like a huge jump in difficulty though and I found it hard to keep up with the onslaught of enemies. Overall though, excellent job on this one, you should be proud :)

Developer(+1)

Yeah I think the game ended up a bit too difficult in the early levels and too easy in the later levels. Turns out it's really hard to balance all those different upgrades! I think the secret is to get Scatter Shot early and ignore some of the late game upgrades until later, but I don't think I've found the most winning strategy yet either. Thank you so much for playing though! I am super proud haha, spent a lot of time on it and it's basically my first finished project :D

Submitted(+1)

Didn't connect the game and theme right away but it's a cool idea! Simple but requires a certain amount of proficiency.

Developer(+1)

I had an earlier prototype that connected the theme a lot better but ultimately went with the one I thought was more fun. And yeah I never quite got the balance right, struggled with it being too easy for the entire Jam and then suddenly at the end it was too hard, haha. Definitely a good learning experience. Thanks so much for playing!

Submitted(+1)

i liked the core concept & gameplay but im not gonna lie i found the dialogue annoying to sit through when i just wanted to play. please make it skippable

Developer

Hey! Endless mode is the same game without the dialogue. Hope you give it another try with that in mind :) If you just want to skip parts of the dialogue I've found that spamming the skip dialogue button and the select button (controls are listed below the game on the itch page) worked well for me. Glad you like the gameplay!

Submitted(+1)

gave it another try and really loved the loop! awesome job

Submitted(+1)

Very fun and addictive game. I love the graphics!

Developer

Thank you so much! I had such a hard time figuring out the graphical style haha, it's not something I've ever done before. I wish I could've done a little more but I'm glad you liked it. Enjoy the game :)
