Game description
Naval pew-pew battling on a wavey, 2d sea

Theme interpretation
The game takes place entirely on waves: 2d gerstner waves to be exact. I also simulated buoyancy so the ships get rocked around on the waves.

Nice waves!

Just a few quick tips:

  • You could add a subtle tint or visual distinction to the player boat so it stands out more from the others
  • For sound effects, you might try recording a few yourself with Audacity, using sfxr.me, or exploring freesound.org

I’m sure you already know this but didn’t have time to implement it

Overall, it’s fun to play, and it even has multiplayer! Good entry ;)

Cool game i was able to set the high score. I enjoyed the graphics and gameplay.

Neat! Is it really a multiplayer game too? Made it to a score of 66 (plus two ships, dunno how much they gave) before I was ganked from both directions at the same time.

The AI isn't too smart can can be easily either pretty much zero distance and quite safely try to lob upwards as your own shots can't hurt yourself. Or you can also quite easily just out range them as they don't seem to properly be shooting the max distance. They only laded their shots nearby if the waves were really not in your favour.

First huge chunk of the game (after the first few ships) nothing was spawning for me. I reached the edge of the world and then decided to go the other way. Then the opponents started appearing in quite a reasonable pace but they didn't really pose any real threat before they started appearing from both directions.

The repair mechanic seemed a bit pointless. I don't think there was any other use for the supplies so it might as well have been fully automatic. I don't see much point in requiring the player to keep mashing the repair button constantly. To make it better and more interesting, repair could be a lot quicker and maybe immobilize and stop you from shooting so it would need to be a bit more strategic.

The waves looked great and the ships were nice too. The audio side was a bit barren and repetitive. So many actions were completely void of sound making it feel more awkwardly unimmersive. And of course music would have helped too.

Anyways, good job! 👍

For the repair: no need to mash, it can be held down like the other buttons. It does currently immobilize you and I thought the holding down would be a good system, but it probably should just be a toggle: flip the repair switch on when you feel safe; flip it off if a threat shows up.

I agree it needs more sounds! No idea how to make water splash sounds though.

Thanks for the great feedback.

Fun little game. Missed some music or sounds. The graphics are awesome.

Great game! I loved the use of waves to allow defense and shot randomization. I also really liked what you did with AI, just shooting the same angle with occasional boats who tried to ram you. Felt like it provided just the right amount of challenge. The art was nice and everything felt fun and balanced. The only thing it felt like it was missing was some sound, the sounds were a little simple and the game felt a little empty because of it. But otherwise this was a ton of fun I played until like 107 rep.

Developer

Thanks! What's funny is the AI is incredibly dumb (it picks a foe, fires somewhat randomly, and tries to stay within a certain distance of its foe), but because of the interplay of all the NPC boats crowded together and the waves, they sometimes appear to be smart.

Re: sounds, I wasn't sure how to get nice wave/splashing sounds with my retro sound-generator (zzfx). What other sounds would you recommend?

Re: sounds. Some low midi music or even just some wind. Just something to fill the space between fights. Maybe some acceleration sound or something or a repairing sound.
Re: AI I kind of wondered, it's cool how simple systems can produce such complexity

Providing P2P is quite impressive!

The fact that the wave height and angle are given to you, and all you can do is decide when to fire — that's what makes this game such a unique experience. I think the joy of landing a hit is so satisfying precisely because it's not intuitive. If you develop this further into a single-player mode, it'd be even more fun with features like showing the trajectory before firing, or letting players upgrade the cannon's performance or unlock different types. I haven't tried PVP so I can't speak to that, but even if you took it in an agar.io kind of direction, I think it'd be really exciting!!

A fun little game I enjoyed sinking all the ships :D

Quite simple yet very enjoyable and easy to understand game! I've had fun sinking all those ships. Looks very nice with good sounds and pixel art~

Both the sounds and graphics are great! The gameplay is challenging and (at least for me) easy to learn but hard to master.

Plus, shooting down other ships is extremely satisfying.

Firefox: cannot establish connection to wss://0.peerjs.com/peerjs?key=peerjs&id=G211_wave_morph&token=rnrxcfv40rf&version=1.5.5 .I've refreshed a few times and got the same error every time. Any ideas? Is that my network problem or is that a problem with your server?

Developer

I tried on Firefox on Windows and it worked okay for me. I can only guess that your network might be blocking p2p connections.

I really enjoyed every part of this. Loved the sound effects from the cannon and there were in fact waves.

I liked this game a bit. Reminds me of worms but at sea. Didn't really understand the repairing mechanism.

Developer

Repairing only works when you have supplies from defeating ships, and you have to hold down "r" or the repair button -- which is probably a confusing interface.

There are definitely waves! I thought this was fun and a bit clever.
