Overall, not bad. I thought that the gameplay generally felt a little clunky, though putting the crates on the raft as quickly as possible felt quite nice once I got the hang of it. The music was good, and I really liked the shader that you used for the shield. I also noticed some IK stuff going on with the player character's legs - nice touch! I know stuff like that isn't the easiest thing to do, so kudos on that. Good job!
sick tentacles.
I love the kraken and how the raft satisfyingly breaks (although that probably means I'm dead).
I kind of understand the main mechanic but crates fly to my raft very slowly and often even get stuck before landing on the point I chose.
I think this game could have potential - given more time!
I think a more detailed tutorial is needed. After the game started, I was thrown into the sea, which left me a bit lost, and then I got killed by a sea monster.
When I finally learned how to click on the boxes, I tried dragging them onto the boat, but they didn't seem to be movable. I used the blue shield attack; the effect was cool, and I was pleasantly surprised when I first discovered it, but I don't actually understand how I used it.
Onboarding the player was defiantly the biggest draw back of this project,
the way to move the crates is to left click the crat then mouse over where you want to put the crate, then hold down the left click and the crate will float over to where you hold
Below is a short video for the controls
The waves are lovely and the kraken mechanic is cool. I like the timing on it. The rolling waves are really well done. I wasn't really able to make the packages do anything though. Like I click them and they just kind of jump. Is there something I'm missing. I'm not sure how to channel them or move them to my boat or move my boat to them. I tried swimming to them and moving around my raft. If you can explain that command I'd love to give it another shake. The sound design was nice the music is tense. I love your procedural animations and art style though it's a really nice little game.
Sorry for the late reply, to move them you need to click the crate, then move the mouse over to the raft and it will show where its going to place it, then hold down the left click again and while you are holding it will channel moving it to that spot.
I think the problem is I have done a pour job giving the player this information, it really needs a tutorial or onboarding to help with this
Nice. Thanks for the reply. I understand now. I played it with that information and it was pretty cool. I really like the floating pathing. It's slow but not too slow and it has a risk reward component with you. Drop it and try to catch it or waste the time trying to get the whole thing. I managed to get 11 boxes. It's a pretty fun game. It adds a really nice resource balanced element that was missing when I didn't know how to do that. I really like it.
And yeah tutorial stuff is really hard to design even professional games struggle with that and it's a game jam so it's hard to get to stuff like that. You did include the commands on the bottom but I didn't fully understand them until your follow-up (though from some of the comments some people can't see them. It sounds like classic UI issues that involve how you anchored, different screen resolutions can cause issues.). You might just include a little write-up on the game page or on this page about how to play, I think people are generally willing to read to figure it out. I've definitely had almost the same thing happen In a different jam and people usually were willing to check the page to figure out how to make the game work.
But really it's a very pretty game and the gameplay definitely has that cool spontaneous vibe that I really dig into games where stuff is all a little chaotic so great job!
First of all, the general design of the octopus boxes is really beautiful, and the gameplay is fun.
You've thought well about the logic of making shields to defend yourself. Congratulations on reaching this level in time.
I loved the game and played it three times from the beginning, but I have a problem: I couldn't find a way to take the boxes and place them on my own raft. Good job, well done.
I think I did a pour job onboarding the information to the player on how to move the crates.
you have to click the crate then move the mouse over to the raft where it will show a green image of where you are aiming the spell to place the crate, then you hold down the left click to channel moving the crate to the raft. I think the lack of tutorial is a short fall I have on this project
I tried it, but it didn't work. I think it's my fault. I'll try again according to your instructions.
ops. I tried it and realized the box was flying towards us. I hadn't tried holding it down. My bad. :))
The BGM is a bit noisy, TBH
Normally I'd hook in a settings option for volume control, but unfortunately November was not my month for time management
I liked the idea with the kraken. I must admit there were too many things to read/do to really make some progress in the game, but I believe this is something that can be fixed, maybe a tutorial to allow the player to get used to all the actions before leaving it be beated by the kraken :)
True that, I think it needs an onboarding level that walks you through the mechanics, which I was planning to make.... but I only ended up getting a few free hours across a few days over November to put as much of what was in my head in to something that could be played.
Thank you for Playing and for leaving feed back.
Did you play it though the DL version or through the browser?
I played it in the browser, I was aware of the missing shader, but I gave it a try
