Voting experience Sticky

I’m really not trying to hate here, but I do feel like this jam theme is a bit tough to vote on. There are a lot of great games that don’t necessarily fit cleanly into the two categories we have: “Most like the original” and “Most creative twist.”

It makes me feel bad giving lower scores to solid games just because they don’t line up perfectly with those two angles. Those categories work super well for more traditional or game-like entries, but things like Tamagotchi or "simple" projects naturally don’t perform as well under that structure since  either have to limit your creativity to mimic a small, simple game, or push so hard for a twist that it starts to feel like a stretch, with the risk that it doesn’t really fit the category anymore.

Just sharing the thought..  I loved the virtual pet theme and the creativity and effort this jam produced is honestly awesome.

I know we have "Best overall" but that fell into the same issue. The only suggestion I can come up with is a third category for Best Game or something like that. IDK I am bad with names, but I wanted to contribute and not only judge here :p.

I'd love to hear what you think, do you feel the same way?

Fair points rulric, thank you for expressing it so well!!

I like the idea of formalizing the overall category into something votable, where good overall game design is celebrated regardless of the game's adherence to the theme.

The categories are a WIP so this is extremely helpful. Interested if others have thoughts too (well you're not the first to have concerns tbh 😅)

I second this. I like how approachable the current 2 categories are rather than just skill based, but the lack of an overall game play category basically makes it so the highest rated are the ones who are either most similar to the game or least similar to the game. Just adding a 3rd category of best balanced or most enjoyable to play or even simply "best game" as rulric put it, would help with awarding those who deserve extra recognition for their work.

Heard!!

Great point that there's an unrecognized valley between most/least similar.

For whatever it's worth, I realized one of the reasons I resisted making an extra category in the past.

The two we have now are so opposed to each other that a single game will probably never win both.

But, adding an extra votable category like Best Game wouldn't come with that guarantee, and so the same game could win that and one of the other two.

In fact, I think it's possible that *every* Best Overall (voted on) game would also be one of the two that win Best Most Like the Original or Best Creative Twist.

I could be wrong about that, and maybe it doesn't matter that that happens tbh. But, I can't help thinking that makes the category pointless if it's just going to be won by another winner. (See the first GLJ for an example, where the Creative Twist swept every other category!... except most like the original 😉)

I think by adding the new one, and letting it cook for a few GLJ's, it would be an opportunity to observe what actually happens. Then go from there.

And maybe it's worth having Best Game -- however unuseful I think it could be for determining winners -- just so that voters can not feel as boxed in by the two we have now.

Just some thoughts 😊

More thoughts!

After playing the games, I'm understanding where y'all are coming from a lot better.

Having to give mid (3 star) ratings to games with great individual aspects feels wrong.

Plus, if there are more categories, participants can get more feedback on their specific strengths/weaknesses.

For at least a couple jams moving forward, maybe more...
Let's bring back the system used in Game-like Jam 1: Frogger.
See it in action here: /jam/gamelike-jam-001/results

--- Next GLJ Categories ---

- Best Most Like the Original
- Best Creative Twist on the Original

Will still be the most celebrated categories.

- Overall Winner/Runner-Up

Will still be determined and equally celebrated as the previous two.

- Game Completeness, Artistry, & Sound Design

Or some slight variation, will be brought back as additional categories intended to:

  1.  Help determine an Overall Winner/Runner-Up
  2.  Provide a chance to celebrate a game's specific victories
  3. Offer feedback to entrants on their strengths/weaknesses

Thank you for giving your input (not just the two here on this thread but others in the past too) -- I think this will be a good change moving forward!

I love this, sound like a big win for everyone. I can't wait to see it in action :)

5/5 stars idea :D

I totally agree with your points, rulric. I found myself a bit conflicted during voting because I did not want to discourage devs, but I also did not want to inflate their ratings in a way that felt dishonest or out of pity (for the sake of not discrediting someone else's game that is strictly more "Tamagotchi-like"). A third category like "Game Completeness" (or something similar) would do a great job of providing devs additional feedback while not discrediting submissions that better adhere to the intended submission rules/types.

I've never hosted a jam before, so I'm not sure what's capable with Itch's system, but it'd be cool if each category (Gameplay, Art, Audio) had ratings simply for the sake of feedback (even if they were not factored into which game actually "won" the jam).

EDIT: I read Lyz's comments (and plans for 3 category honorable mentions) - very cool! XD
