Game description
The tide is rising. The fog is boiling.
Build. Gather. Defend the Hall.
Don't let the Dread set in.
W.A.V.E.S.
Whispers Across Vast Ebon Seas
The air is heavy. The water is black. And something is moving in the fog.
W.A.V.E.S. is an atmospheric survival RTS with a unique horror twist, built entirely in ASCII. You are the new leader of a coastal settlement on the edge of the world. By day (Low Tide), you must order your villagers to gather resources, construct defences, and prepare for the inevitable. By night (High Tide), the ocean surges, and the horrors of the deep come to claim what is theirs.
Guided by the village Elder, you will learn to manage your workforce and fortify your position. But be warned: the sea is not your only enemy.
Build. The walls are thin, but they are all that separates you from the void.
Gather. The resources are scarce, but the village must be fed.
Defend. The Elder says the old ways will protect us. The Elder says the tide is just water. The Elder is wrong.
Survive until the 7th dawn.
Key Features
Lo-Fi Horror: A fully animated ASCII world featuring dynamic fog, particle bursts, and screen-shaking impact effects.
Command Your People: Assign villagers to gather wood and stone, build walls, or man the watchtowers. Use the [G] key to take direct control of their priorities.
The Dread System: Fear is tangible. As the situation worsens, your screen will distort, hallucinations will manifest, and your villagers may succumb to panic. Keep the Dread low, or face the consequences.
Survive 7 Cycles: Defend the Great Hall against increasingly terrifying waves of enemies, from the swarming Lurkers to the towering Brutes and the deadly Extruders.
A Narrative Beginning: Play through "Cycle 0," a narrative-driven prologue that sets the stage for your struggle.
How to Play
WASD: Move your character.
E: Interact / Reinforce walls (Hold).
F: Order villagers to follow you.
G: Assign following villagers to a task (Gather/Build/Man Tower).
B: Open the Build Menu.
R: Rally panicked villagers or un-man a tower.
Theme interpretation
The theme of the game is fulfilled in three ways:
1. The name of the game has the acronym "W.A.V.E.S."
2. The game is set next to the sea, with tidal waves being important to the gameplay, lore, and atmosphere.
3. The enemies spawn and attack in waves, and are also dependent on the tides to spawn.

The graphics were very nice. Unfortunately the tutorial dialogues would disappear before I could read them, and I had to restart the game several times. I liked the aesthetic though, it would be really good with some gameplay and UI tuning.
Sorry to hear that about the tutorial. I've now added an objectives panel to help you keep track during the tutorial. Could you tell me what kind of gameplay issues you ran into so I can target those for the next update?
Hmm, a little tricky and potentially a skill issue but I wasn't sure whether I should stand next to or on an object to interact with it. Another one is how to get people to follow me, I did do it by holding F and walking around but I wasn't sure exactly how it worked.
One way I imagine to make it clearer is through level design in a tutorial level. That's just one idea.
I wasn't really able to play... I rang a bell it seems, then the villagers ran in the house then nothing. No action had any effect whatsoever. Really nice ASCII world and presentation tho!
Oh, I'm sorry to hear that! Can you tell me when you rang the bell? Was it during the tutorial and before the Elder actually asks you to do so? In that case, it might be a softlock I need to fix.
it was before I even got wood for the first time haha. I should give it another try and don't ring it so early!
Yeah, that's probably a softlock. I will disable the bell ringing during the wrong stages of the tutorial in the next patch. Out of curiosity, did the game not allow you to re-ring the bell afterwards? That would have sounded the all-clear and brought the villagers back out.
Yes exactly, there was no option to re-ring the bell afterwards.
Hey, just wanted to let you know that this softlock should be fixed now.
It worked pretty well after some experimentation!
I would recommend the elder's dialogue not disappear so quickly, and the villagers should remember their tasks between waves instead of automatically going back to idling/farming.
When the villagers were gathering or building, there was not much feedback on how long it would take, so the first time I thought it might be stuck.
I wished combat were a bit slower so I could get a feel for what was working.
Great work going for the ASCII style and pulling it off!
Happy to hear that! Yes, the Elder's tutorial will be reworked as soon as I can get back to it. I'm currently pushing out a few updates for my other game. What kind of tasks were your villagers not remembering? Villagers can build, farm, repair, and heal automatically, and will also use a gathering hut if present. Any other tasks like individual gathering and manning towers need to be assigned manually.
Okay it was probably my own fault, I had been assigning them to gathering but maybe they only gather one resource and then go back to idle.
Yes, if you manually assign them to gather one resource, they will gather it and go back to idle. But if you assign them to the gathering hut they will automatically go and collect every resource on the map.
I like the ascii graphics, though I couldn't actually seem to play the game sadly. The tutorial that the elder gives you can be overridden by doing another task, and then you can't see what he was asking you to do. I tried a couple of times, but every time I ordered a villager to gather materials I wouldn't get any other updates and was stuck just walking around.
Ah. Yes, I'm planning to branch the tutorial system off the log because it can get very busy. If you asked the villager to gather rubble and they finished, the tutorial is then progressed by pressing B to enter build mode.
