Does the work we use need to have entered the public domain BECAUSE it was originally published in 1930?

Or is it sufficient to use a work that was published in 1930, but may have entered the public domain through alternative means (like a lapsed copyright renewal) at an earlier point in time than January 1st, 2026?

Anything published in 1930 (except music recordings) is fine! We don’t expect folks to track down if works were renewed or not.
