What instruments/DAW you've used
Guitar and mandolin were recorded (even though my mandolin chops ain't what they used to be...), the rest is VST. I used mostly NI libraries, with exception of the violin being Cinesamples' Taylor Davis library - lately it's been my favourite solo violin lib, works wonders. Done in Cockos Reaper. Love the instrumentation here! The violin and mandolin create such a playful, theatrical mood. It feels like a scene from an old point-and-click adventure game, or the famous Mos Eisley Cantina scene but in a pirate setting - quirky, drunk, and full of character. Very charming and great fun!

Thanks, glad you enjoyed it!

And congrats on getting the (very well deserved) first place :)

Nice one. Real instruments and VSTis blend well together. Great counterpoint. The B-Section felt a bit forced to me.

Developer

Thanks!

I spent the most composing time to make counterpoint sound good. Mando and violin sound unexpectedly sweet in 3rds (and resolving to 3rds). It's not really surprising per se, but it's only on the record when it gets this warmth. Wasn't like that with soundfonts :P

Would you mind elaborate a bit what did you find "forced" about B section?

It didn't feel like an inspiration that came to you but like something you came up with to finish the composition. Of course that is only my opinion and I don't know if that's true or not, but art is always subjective and in the end we tend to like stuff that doesn't feel constructed. It wasn't bad, but it didn't have the freshness of ideas as the first part.

Okay, fair enough.

It's always good to understand the feedback, that's how we all grow; so thanks for replying :)

Authentic sounding tremelo trad folk style piece. Nicely recorded, I prefer the real instruments to the vst in this case but perhaps that can be blended further.

Developer

Thanks!

I totally agree. I'd love to make the everything without VST, but it's hard to play every instrument there is... which does not mean I won't be trying! :D

It's great that there is a possibility to use virtual instruments, but making them sound good is an art of its own. I'm still learning how to make stuff sound more dynamic and realistic. I guess that's the beauty of our craft, one can always get better :)

Superb.

Thank you!

Thanks!

I like to have recordings sound more "live" than "album", makes those smaller, more intimate arrangements sound more real :)

Nice guitar/mandolin work! I really enjoyed the idea and execution. I'm going to say it was a bar fight for part B. lol

Aye, that's the vibe I was going for :D

Thanks!
