Didn't get too far but I totally get what was happening. The music is my favorite part. If you ever add gamepad support I will return with a vengeance. Well done!
The game is nice but the level design can be hard to follow sometimes. I feel that the controls could be a little more polished, like adjusting the Jailbird's jump height based on how long the jump button was held down for etc.
Music and instant respawn helped calming down from co. ba. an. Thankyou
Will definitely come back. Tho would probably get through life and do stuff like becoming ceo of smth before managing to properly beat this game lul
Insane level design for one person on jam deadline.
Got filtered for now but definitely plan to grind it after I’m done with reviews.
The art and immediate retries do great job at keeping it from getting frustrating. Although most of the credit should probably go to the tilt button lol
Made it to the last level, somehow, but had to throw in the towel there
Seconding that sometimes the movement feels a little too floaty for the precision jumps needed on these maps
I think it might help if you made it so that any input overrides previous ones - for example, right now if you jump, hold left, then hold right while still in the air, you stop in place. But there are a handful of jumps that require you to make a quick switch back in the air. If you could work it out so any new input will override the last, you could make that jump much easier (but also lean into it with more hazards around them, I dunno I haven't studied kaizo level design). But I think it would also help with being able to quickly reverse your momentum for those precise jumps (at least that's how it works in my head, but it might not end up working that way in the back end when implemented)
But otherwise I really love the pixel art across the board, and the music, everything else about the submission feels really good. Great work, and thank you for helping me confirm that I am indeed not a kaizo gamer, went through like 3 biblical crashouts to make it as far as I did.
I love that people rage like crazy at the game and then go "Yeah I liked it" It warms my heart cause making a Rage Game make you Rage but also enjoy it is insanely hard and I'm happy I got it somewhat right :D
I'm a fan of kaizo games and this hit almost the right spot for it. The music and aesthetic of it works really well. My main feedback is for a kaizo game with precision platforming, the controls are a little too loose and the input feels imprecise. I think one reason for that is you have momentum, so sometimes landing on a thin platform you'll slide off.
For other game references, I Wanna Be The Guy has very tight controls where you stop on a dime, so the deaths don't feel unfair. However, your game style seems to match more closely with Super Meat Boy, though the level design in that game is in such a way that you could stop your moment safely by jumping into a wall (most of the time) and moving in the opposite direction stops you pretty quickly. It's possible the level design is what's making it feel bad for this game.
I enjoyed the first half until you get to the first rest area, then after that there's a massive difficulty spike due to what I mentioned above. I still have no idea how to get past the second level after the rest area. I would definitely play more of this though with some improvements as it's pretty solid.
First and foremost, I hate you (affectionate) as this was my first rage game so I just went in blindly.
Anyways everything looks cool, the art looks amazing, and it definitely made me rage so there's that. Thank god there's a skip button, only managed to go until the 3rd/4th stage so that's an achievement for me at least :p
Cool aesthetics and solid platformer overall!
Not bad platformer. It ran into the problem several times being stack between screens and I didn't know where I am what cause death. One time i jumped out of bounds... don't know how. I think would be better if you could stop or change direction faster. Overall good platformer but not my type of game.
Lovely game, I like the art and atmosphere. Games like this make me wonder how much time the dev had to spend testing their own game for fairness. :^)
I got until the terracotta level, which, after skipping through, turned out to be the last level, so not bad of me if I say so myself!
About 1000 Deaths, with Most being on the last 2 levels. xD I spent more hours testing than writing code or making art xD
I liked the Nerissa art and the pixel work on this game.
I'm not good at precision platformers, so I appreciate you added the skip level button.
I wish there was some sort of time related element in the game, so that it fits more with the jam theme. Unless you've gone with a different theme interpretation I didn't catch?
Overall, nice game.
I'm happy you liked the game although it isn't exactly your cup of coffee <3. For the Theme i focused a lot on the Helpers, Kaizo embodies the Theme Really well, the entire Genre is about changing your fate by repeating the same thing over and over again and "good enough" being what you need to get through the level itself. And me running out of time to finish the entire game is pure serendipity xD.
Oh! I see it now! Thank you for explaining!
Really neat game! The vibes were on point. I particularly liked the first blue level that utilized the looping wall mechanic (or whatever you call the thing that teleports you from the top to the bottom of the screen). I only wanted to punch my monitor a few dozen times!
I'm glad the looping mechanic was as enjoyable as it was frustrating :D. Mission Accomplished then :3.
Really like the game even tho it was hard. I managed to cheese two levels by using (and here i give it a name) Edge Loop Glitch :)
A Skip Level button has been added to the game, just press "O" if you wish to skip ahead or through an extremely hard part and try the next level anyway.
This is super fun, I'm stuck on the S-like level and loving every moment of it, the art is really pretty, I particularly enjoy how the few colored items really pop.
I also feel the music fits the game quite well, even if it is a bit too loud for me.
As a funny note, I thought the yeet button was some sort of dash jump and self-destructed a lot on the first level.

The game got me this time too, but it did feel way better than when I originally played it, especially the level I commented on on the discord server. Great improvements.

I had a lot of fun with it and played it for quite a long time too xD though needed to go afk for like half an hour while i left the game open to continue after im back. The thing with that is that there is a massive lagspike the longer the game is open which made movement really slow and almost unplayable. And refreshing the page sent me straight to the beginning again so couldnt finish every level. But it is addicting! Nice work!
THAT is actually something I was wondering myself. IT happens only on GX Strip exports and not direct HTML5 exports, problem is HTML5 didn't want to take audio for some ungodly reason. I have to do some investigation, I think I'm leaking memory on the player object, causing the lag long time in.

Unfortunately I don’t think I’m the correct audience for these types of games, but I can at least say that it did feel well made.
There is one thing I would highly urge you to do, should you make a similar game for another jam: please include some way of skipping past levels. There was a pretty massive difficulty spike in one of the rooms (my deaths jumped from just a few to over a hundred), and while I did eventually push through it, I was also very close to just quitting.
And even if you think its fine that some people will get stuck, there is another big reason to do so: in the very next room, I got stuck in a wall while dashing. As far as I could tell, there was no way to recover from this except to start over. If not a skip option, consider at least including a way of reloading the current level.
Still, from what I played it was enjoyable (albeit a bit too difficult for me personally)!
I am fortunately aware of all the issues you mentioned and they will be fixed actually in this game directly after the jam is over :D. IT's supposed to be a hard game, that was kinda what I set out to make here but you're right that more polish should be involved. Thank you for playing and taking the time to actually type out criticisms and ways to improve <3
