I liked this.
I beat round 5, probably after 10 games.
Having the tasks not change between games really helps you strategize.
Buying at least 1 card a round so that you can reduce one dice to a d4 for the divide by round and then back up to a d10 or d12 later.
It was quick to play the next game
Randomness sometimes is too random.
Sometimes you roll a really good first turn and have enough coins to get through round 3.
The first round (sum of all dice) seems to have such a bigger impact than the second round (divide by).
More control over the result. Re-roll a dice or change a number after the roll.
hey i played this and left my feedback on the discord!
Questions:
Additionally, I wasn’t able to console log it (due to the machine I was on) - but when I applied the +1 to odd sides card it applied to both of my d6s. I assume this is a bug.
Overall a fun game and I would be interested to see more of it.
I liked this a lot! This is about the right level of fidelity for such a prototype to have an efficient design process ;)
What round did you get to before quitting?
Round 3 in the first playthrough.
What was your strategy, if any?
Computing expected values optimizing my chances of success. I did sacrifice a bit of that for dice pool diversity on occasion. It seemed like I might need that in the next rounds.
What did you most like?
Playing with numbers, calculating the optimal strategy was very fun.
What was frustrating?
Failing despite having estimated an acceptable chance of success. Random chance can be cruel.
What did you wish you could do?
I would have liked having more options to manipulate my chances of success. What I was doing felt like there was mostly a correct answer. Of course, figuring it out is comparatively hard as it involves some computation, which I find fun and rewarding in its own right. But after doing that I felt that there was no choice left.
I’ve shared a video playtest of your project in the Discord channel! :)
Check the games page for feedback, but I like this!
Hello! Please find my feedback and a recording of my play session below:
What round did you get to before quitting?
- Completed the round where you had to get 100 coins. I would have gone further but unfortunately I kept hitting the following bug:
3index.html:407 Uncaught TypeError: Cannot read properties of undefined (reading 'ruleText')
at nextRound (index.html:407:48)
at HTMLButtonElement.onclick (index.html:618:83)
I did try it twice just in case, but it did this both times after completing the 100 coin requirement round and hitting 'Next round!'
What was your strategy, if any?
- Mostly just selecting all the dice I could, with selecting a card. I didn't realise at first that once I 'used' a card that it didn't go away. I thought once I used a card in a round it would either spawn a new one or at least remove the one I used from the options.
What did you most like?
- It was fun kind of just selecting the dice and letting them roll so to speak. The RNG aspect of it.
What was frustrating?
- That I couldn't play more :(
What did you wish you could do?
- I would have liked to see more of the cards and their affects, but I was barely clearing some of the levels so I didn't want to spend any of my coins. I like the idea of being able to modify the RNG a bit to put things more in my favour.
Good job! I can see something very interesting being built from this early prototype.
What round did you get to before quitting?
Finished the whole thing.
What was your strategy, if any?
Used the knowledge of upcoming rounds upon retry. Early rounds I needed to roll high, later it was better to roll low on most dice so I tried to adjust my dice accordingly.
What did you most like?
The tradeoff in spending points to buy cards.
What was frustrating?
Having to click exactly on a tiny checkbox/radio drove me nuts. Hint: use <label for=”$inputId”> to make the label text clickable ;)
I felt that carryover coins had too much of an impact - I had a much easier time if I rolled high in the first two rounds.
What did you wish you could do?
Pay more for the cards but be able to choose one from 2-3.
This is such an interesting idea for a design challenge!
1. What round did you get to before quitting?
Round 6
2. What was your strategy, if any?
Focus on buying as many cards as possible to buff one die as much as possible
3. What did you most like?
The interaction between the cards and die
4. What was frustrating?
Not being able to carry over coins to the next round, feels like it is missing a bit of a risk reward. Oh should I keep my coins to get over the line or should I spend them on the chance to get a really good card.
5. What did you wish you could do?
I know this is totally against the point of the project but being able to see the dice themselves roll, not having that tactile thing always feels like it takes away from things with dice for me.
First text only dice game I played.
1. What round did you get to before quitting?
I got stuck in round with 100 coins requirement, idk if the game ends there or if it is a bug.
2. What was your strategy, if any?
Using larger or smaller dice depending on current round rules.
3. What did you most like?
Scoring rules changing every round keeps it fresh.
4. What was frustrating?
Adapting to it only being text and understanding that each round the scoring rules change.
5. What did you wish you could do?
Like some other suggested it would be cool to get to pick the cards that you get from X different options or at least to not have them repeat so much. You could have a variable that keeps track of latest picked card to avoid repeating the last one. Using a non-repeat shuffled array to iterate on all elements before repeating (deck-like behavior) is another option but it takes some more code.
Bugs
It think is a bit early to get a proper feel of the gameplay or mechanics, Im not sure what the first 2 dice options mean or why they are the same (1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6), is it 1 dice with 6 faces? Or 1 dice with 1 face + 1 dice with 2 faces +1 dice with 3 faces.... The most common representation on dices in games tend to be 1d6 or 1d1 + 1d2 + 1d3, also knowing the result of each dice roll separately is usually expected in this types of games, so starting with clearer visuals could go a long way. But congrats on the progress so far this could definitely evolve into an cool game. Keep it going.
Hey ! It's awesome that you managed to make a prototype with 0 visuals. A nice reminder that this (or a similar paper prototype) is a viable and fast way to prototype when making a new game. For the game itself: It's very neat and I can think of a million great settings where this can be used as gameplay. I wonder what you'll come up with!
1. What round did you get to before quitting?
Round 3, two coins short =(
2. What was your strategy, if any?
I was just reacting to the round rules and wanted to find out what my possibilities were
3. What did you most like?
The way the different mechanics intertwined and affected each other
4. What was frustrating?
The first 2 minutes adapting to a text-based game
5. What did you wish you could do?
Idk if this is a thing I would put in, but I want to find out what other cards could be drawn. But now I have a reason to come back :) So probably don't put in a way to look up more xD
(The first question let's me assume I should answer this right after my first round, I might play some more and come back)
Edit:
I played some more and cleared all rounds yay
My strategy was having one relatively low die and 2 big ones Achieved that on round 2 and didn't draw cards again because I thought the deck was working well. Nice game!
I made it to round 5 but admittedly only because i had infinte coins. Otherwise i got to round 4 .
I tried to make one 6 sided die with small numbers and die and one die with 10 or 12 faces and big numbers
I like the fiddeling around with manipulating the numbers on the dices and how it could 'break' the game.Like when i realised I could get a 0 I really wanted to know if i could divide by 0.
drawing cards would often give me many "change to x-sided die" cards in a row. And I can't reasonably make use of that many of them.
I wish i could have maybe had more of a choice in what card I buy, to feel more in control of my strategy. Like other card games that give x random cards, choose 1
bugs i found:
when you play the card to add 3 to the two lowest faces of a die after adding 1 to all odd numbered faces it doesn't at 3 to the two 2Faces but to one 2 Face and one 4Face
Hi, nice dice game. It was fun, and I've got through all five rounds in my fifth try.
My strategy was keep one big die, one small die, and one for flexibility.
I liked that every round had a different rule and I had to think about what I should do.
I was frustrated when the dice came out way worse than expected.
Maybe a reroll ability would be nice? Then you can make the game more challenging as players have a way to recover from bad RNG.
