A jam submission

Holojam 7 - Deadline Vampire SurvivorsView game page

An attempt at making a vampire survivors clone, solo. It's not good I know, but I'm proud of what I accomplished.

It’s a nice Vampire Survivors base, I think it’s cool to be able to put out something at all so props for that.

Most of the comments on where to go from here were already said, but I do have to reiterate on how the screen shake was way too violent, I couldn’t play for too long cause it was painful to look at.

Also, some of the ground obstacles blended in with the floor, so I was bumping into floor obstacles I didn’t even notice and was confused at what was I hitting, would be good to make them more distinct.

Nice work, keep learning and improving!

It is a good base for a game. I recommend next time focus on what player must do. What is the goal of the game, how to reach it and what problems player must solve to reach the goal.

Jam Judge(+1)

I see a good base that could become a more solid game.

However, in it's current state I don't see how it fits the jam theme.

Some improvement suggestions:

- I don't know if you worked on all the assets in the game (tilesets, character sprite, enemies, sounds, music) but if there's any created by third parties, please make sure you credit them in your game or in your game's itch page.

- If the bar at the top is levelling up the player character, it would be nice to see a number displaying the level, so that the player gets some feedback.

- I couldn't understand what the countdown from 30 on the screen meant. It didn't seem to be a timer, since sometimes the number would not go down.

- Make sure you tell the player what the goal is. Is it surviving longer than X minutes? Is it reaching X level?

- It would be nice to know what's the story of the character we're controlling. Why are they fighting? What are they fighting?

- The restart / quit buttons at the game over screen don't work.

- The camera shake was a bit too strong.

Good entry. I hope you keep improving this project in the future!

Thank you for the feedback and for playing my game! I truly do appreciate the feedback, and will implement those after the judging is done!

A nice base, I had fun.  The sound effects are a bit too frequent, but if they were less common they're really good sound effects.  The hits are heavy and impactful, the pickup sound is nice, and the level up chime is great.

Developer

Thank you for the feedback! I was proud of how those turned out! I'm very appreciative that you played my game!

It was a good attempt. Everything was moving too fast, so it would be better to slow the movement down so that players can see what they are fighting and be able to react to it. The screen shake is also too often, it would be better to just shake the screen when the player takes damage.

Developer

Thank you for the valuable feedback! I'll take note of that and definitely try it out! That is a good point.

Somehow the graphics made me so nostalgic! It's a fun little game, a good base for a bigger project!

The camera shaking was a bit too much tho.

Developer (1 edit)

Thank you so much for your feedback! I'll definitely update the screenshake and I plan on adding a bunch more stuff to it later.

I like the fast pace of movement! And the shooting sound was satisfying :3 too bad i have motion sickness and couldn't play for too long bc of the screen shaking ;-;

Developer

Thank you for the kind words! I do appreciate it! And I'm sorry for the motion sickness; I'll turn the camera shake way down and update it in my offtime. After the voting is over, I'll reupload the game.

I'll come out the gate and say I'm a sucker for autoshooter/bullet heaven/survivor-like games, so I might give this a little too much leeway...

But it was a fun little experience!

I like the idea of the both you and the enemies scaling over time, since a lot of the time enemy power doesn't change until you reach a boss or something like that.

And I think this is a good skeleton to grow off of, if you want to continue with it. Add some upgrades, enemy types, etc. and you could have something cooking...

Screen shake was a nice touch, even if it did become overwhelming eventually (maybe you could only apply it on critical hits, if you end up implementing them?)

And doing all of this solo in 2 weeks is crazy - I made a VS clone myself to learn Godot and it probably took me like a month to get the basic mechanics and art in to the stage that this submission is, so great job!

Definitely would be willing to come back and check it out if you return to it post jam!

Developer(+1)

Thank you very much! I do plan on adding some more stuff like upgrades and the like! Yeah, the screen shake is a bit much! Thank you again for playing my game!

Not too bad as a very basic vampire clone game. The camera shake became a bit too much later on since it was constantly shaking the screen.

Developer

Ah, good point. Thank you for the feedback! I wanted to show you getting stronger, but it may have been a bit much.

The controls don't seem to work.

Developer

Thank you for letting me know! I'll try and fix it!
