Despite being a huge Mega Man fan, my Battle Network experience is very low, but I did enjoy the concept of the game still cause of that base. I still didn’t get used to the controls even after making it to the end of the current build, but I also blame that on my own lack of comfortability with keyboard. The art and music were also really nicely done.

It feels a little too fast-paced to keep up with right now, even with intended strategic options. I understand that was mostly due to a lack of being able to work on it (I do hope your health issues are better now!) and everyone has already repeated what I said.

I also think I had some oddities where sometimes the Fire Bomb was not shooting straight forward (to the enemy grid) unless I was turned around. That might have been me not paying attention to the auto-targeting but I swear it happened, unfortunately couldn’t recreate so take with a grain of salt.

Great work, I’d be excited to try a more complete version in the future!

I think it would be better if there was better telegraph for the enemy attacks. I would get sniped by the seals without knowing it.

Developer

Even today, these seals haunts me...

Really digging this one. I never got into Battle Network but I get the appeal. Very fast paced, I think a little too fast. I think me in particular my weakness is the controls. My right hand is 'smarter' than my left, so I feel like that's whats holding me back. Regardless, I love where this is going. Great work! The art style definitely shines too!

A excellent game, and one I'd love to see a finished version of!

While balancing felt a bit strange here and there, I managed to get to the end of the demo without too much trouble.

One improvement I like to see is a gameplay tutorial. Right now, the tutorial does throw a lot of information at you at once. I think if all those abilities were introduced a bit slower, it would feel a lot more manageable.

Balancing issues aside, the game is lovely, and functions really well as a proof-of-concept

Game looks very polished, everything looks high-def and clean, your art really shines here!

I think the biggest downside for me is that everything just kinda happens at once. The tutorial was alot to take in, and enemies attack without much leeway for me to react.

Your entry really stands out from the rest though! There are barely any holostar reps in holojam, so it's nice to see some once in awhile. Thanks for making this!

Developer(+1)

Glad you enjoyed this! And yeah, prob on next Jam I'll also aim for another Holostars project! The game's very unstable so I haven't got the point I did a proper balancing, some enemies still have the placeholder attacks and the boss fights were also overwhelming by the players who haven't played this kind of game and the panels for the battle wasn't supposed to be other state than normal! So after this jam, this game will be re-overhauled! Once again, thanks for the valid feedback!

Art is good and music too. Game have some balancing issues. And need tutorial. I managed to complete it by standing on one place and spam bombs. Also would be great have more mobility. After some actions you have to wait and can't move. Interesting idea. Good job

Developer

One thing I wanted to do is add some animations to Altare, because indeed some spells and (specially) weapons have endlag! So it's really odd to see only a static sprite and not see the endlag. But it's pretty valid point! And, this game is still very far from what I've wanted to accomplish but I'm glad you liked the scratches of it! I'm doing a major overhaul of this game post this jam!

I haven't checked out the games that this combat system is inspired by, but it definitely feels unique.

I feel like most of the time grid based combat like this is turn based, so jumping into it being real time and both the enemies and I just kinda going nuts wasn't something I was ready for. Seconding that I feel like it was a little easy to just spam a single ability for the whole run. Especially during the boss fights, but that's also because of an existing bug, so gotta take that with a grain of salt. but enemies move and attack pretty quickly, so the utility of the spells, despite their cooldown, felt infinitely better than using anything else, in my opinion.

It would be cool to see some more use for basic weapons compared to abilities, with this in mind, but it sounds like you already have a lot planned once the jam is over with.

Looking forward to seeing what content is added, and if it could help me get the hang of the combat system a little better (this is a dig at myself). Good work!

Very nice!  Although I was reminded why I never got far into One Step from Eden.  I can not play these games well to save my life, too many buttons I need to keep track of all at once, and I haven't played any enough to develop that experience.  But after a couple attempts,  I managed to reach the end still!  Fantastic work.

I really like the art and the sound track, and it's always nice to see the boys represented in the jam.  They deserve all the love.

For the type of game you were trying to copy, you did a good job getting the basics done in the game jam time. The current form is kind of a weird mix between Mega Man Battle Network and One Step From Eden as the pacing is more fast paced like Eden instead of the slower pace of Battle Network, but you have a more restricted 3x3 instead of the 5x5. I think the delay before you can move again is a bit too long, which makes things feel sluggish when this benefits more from a snappier movement. This does suffer from the same issue as Eden had where you have too many abilities and options to keep track of that the strategy just becomes build a deck and spam things on cooldown, which is what I did in this to roll through to the end. Since you said you're planning on working on this more, I'm curious to see where you go with this.

Developer (1 edit)

Another valid criticism and points to note + Yay! You know BN and OSFE!

By looking at this, yeah! The delay is kinda long between the abilities, but that wasn't on plans since originally you would recharge after using your abilities. But in this version, there's no delay between using your Abilities to a Weapon so you can combo with for example: A Wind Racket into a Pistol Saber! Also, OSFE was 4x4 iirc. This project is still pretty scuffed but these points you noticed always gets a smile in my face! I'll aim for continuing and tuning the project since (just like my prev jam game) I liked doing this but there's always an unfortunate situation that messes my scheduling and it derseves a purposed version!

And... yea, I kinda have the same issue with OSFE when I have a deck with too many abilities.

Submitted(+1)

Ah, you're right. For some reason, I added an extra row and column to the map. It's been awhile since I last played it.

Developer

Yeah, been a while since my last OSFE run! And the BN tournament I was is also ending! Also, heh! While I'm reformulating this game, I want you to look at this!

Cool game! It was  a bit hard to get my head wrapped around the mechanics though.

Developer

It's alright! Glad you liked it regardless! The game will have a huge overhaul after this jam, so all the (dozens of) mechanics will be explained paciently!

Submitted(+1)

Certainly a lot to unpack, I feel it's an interesting concept so I can see the potential!

Developer(+1)

Yeah, there's like... A LOT OF FEATURES that was cut. Like the deck customization, Nature attacks, small missions, the bosses for Volcano and Temple (and this biome itself) and the playable tutorial! Once this jam's over, imma re-overhaul this project! So if you're still interested to see this, I'll be sayin' this in advance!

Submitted

I didn't get the sense that there was any chance to use actual tactics or strategies. It's just constant enemies doing mysteriously hitting attacks directly at the player character. In particular, the 2 areas felt more like a frustrating contrivance rather than an interesting mechanic. I think you need to slow things down and think about what the player is actually supposed to be doing, then try to convey that better or make it more feasible.

Developer

I'll say, there's actually small but a good number of strategies you can do here! Specially at some boss fights! For example: Take advantage of Thunder Rain since it paralyzes enemies and you can use and charge your weapon! Light Barrier, Defence Potions and Invisible Potions will help to avoid most damage! Offense Potion will make some battles even faster! Unfortunately this game is still clunky and not on a finishing ground (as the battle system I've based  is INDEED complex at first sight), but I'm still trying to tune it down and making it not too simple but not too complicated! A lot of balancing stuff that I've wanted to implement wasn't brought in time, but it's still playable at the limit. So yea, there's no much I can do right now until the jam end.

Submitted(+1)

Interesting albeit a bit overwhelming from the get go. Lotta options and I ended up dying to time. I encountered maybe a bug where I got turned around and couldn't target enemies anymore with basic attacks and could only spam the items to win. Interesting to see a holostars game. Hope to see more, their lore/weapons are cool!

Developer

I think I know what it was, I left a command to turn around by pressing D! So you can turn left or right anytime in battle, which was purposed to be at battles with neutral area! And yeah, I was in a bit of rush due to health issues so I couldn't bring most stuff like lore, weapons and even some balance to the mechanics in time. But I'm glad you like it, future updates will fix this!

Submitted(+1)

Nice work on this game! I pretty much just tanked everything and just spammed my fire bomb/water/lightning until everyone died lol.

The mechanics were pretty interesting. It seemed that water was effective against fire, electric against water. The tile based combat and varied moves seem to have really good potential for some nice strategy!

Developer(+1)

Did you also checked the other abilities in the Pause Menu? I should have stated that in the tutorial as well!

But yeah! The elemental order is a thing here: Water overtakes Fire, Fire overtakes Nature, Nature overtakes Electricity and Electricity beats Water.

A shame I haven't did any Nature-element related in time here!

But I'm glad you enjoyed this prototype!

Jam Judge(+1)

Interesting prototype!

I saw lots of attack options and items that can alter the gameplay. Pretty cool!

I honestly got overwhelmed by the tutorial, though. It's just too much information to take at once.

Definitely consider giving the player time to learn and practice the different battle elements one by one as a tutorial before the actual game.

We also need more of a story to understand why we're fighting. What is this place we're exploring? Who are we fighting? Why is there a time limit?

Good luck on completing the game!

Developer

I was definitely going to add cutscenes to explain that, but unfortunately I didn't made in time! Either this or readjusting the enemies and bosses attacks since they were extremely hard to code! But all of that will be explained in the complete works! Thanks for the feedback regardless!

Submitted(+1)

Not bad for a prototype! Kinda hard to really understand whats going on sometimes but other than that very fun to play around!

Developer(+1)

This was me playing Battle Network for the first me! So yeah... kinda complex to play AND CODING!😭
But I'm glad you enjoyed regardless!
