I really like the atmosphere!
Congratulations for your first game. As others have said, you pretty much nailed the atmosphere. For your first time learning to code it's actually impressive how much stuff you managed to implement. It's good to be critical but you don't have to be too hard on yourself. We all start somewhere and once you get efficient with implementing stuff that's where the fun begins. Hope you stick with it and I'm looking forward to what you'll create.
absolutely amazing work for a first game, and in 30 days too!! actual feedback below, but first I just wanna say this is something you should be proud of, no matter how "fun" it is, it's really well done
Things I liked a lot:
Your atmosphere was genuinely unsettling, the breathing and the emptiness and the fog all added up to me being pretty unnerved while I was looking for the outpost
Your scene composition was great, with the signs pointing off into the fog and things just barely visible, the farm with the single lamp post -- really good stuff
The 3D terrain and textures were really well done
The character controller was very smooth and worked well
that procedural (I assume?) animation for the crop I got to plant was pretty brilliant
Things I suggest:
Raycast3D on your player camera for item interactions
put a flashlight on your player if you keep doing horror themed stuff, it adds so much
but seriously you're just starting and you're doing awesome, excited to see what you do in the future bc you really have a knack for scary atmosphere
Thank you! There was a time where it had both of those (flashlight and raycast3d) after adding more other things it got hard for me to keep rarcasts when I didn’t understand how they worked. And was just following a tutorial from someone else. (Been working on understanding things like this after this jam though) Had to remove the flashlight because of performance the laptop I made this on is really bad and even this “complete” build was running at 15fps or lower and removing the lighting helped not much I could do about that I do have a pc that’s way stronger its just still in the middle of being sent to me as I moved a country recently.
The animation is deceptively procedural. Its only changing the animation length when a plant is planted. Based on a random float range I set.
I have no intention of stopping this hobby I found it very fun will probably join a few other jams in the coming weeks!
Really great style and atmosphere! And I kinda liked the messages from you in game 😁 Very meta! They added to the eeriness.
This is honestly a great job for a first game! Especially taking into account how little time this was made in. On my very first game I couldn't even figure out how to check if the player clicked in the right spot, much less something like a planting system. I absolutely love the general atmosphere and the ambience really gives it a touch! I absolutely adore horror and I'd love to see more of your work in the future and see your takes on specific tropes.
I know you said it is very unfinished and this is your first game, but for that alone I have to say that you did a good job!! I liked the atmosphere and the very grainy texture of everything, and I definitely think you could build on this idea someday if you ever come back to it!!
Thank you! Personally I feel the same, hit the atmosphere pretty well. But the game part isn’t much of a game. Spent most the jam just learning how to program. Found it fun I might continue this idea, or just spread out to learn as much as I can.
