Have you checked that your GDD is publicly accessible ?
Yes

Is your game set to public on itch.io so we can see it?
Yes

Summarize your game!
In "You're Up", you play as a last-minute-replacement-lead-performer for your country in Eurovision. Seeing as you've had little time to prepare, you can hardly be expected to hit all your marks, and execute all your moves flawlessly, but do your best! Don't let your country down!

The gameplay of "You're Up" is rhythm-based, and consists of moving around a tile-based stage to stay in the spotlight (using the arrow keys), and hitting some sweet dance moves whenever possible (using WASD). But be careful with your inputs, everything you do has to be to the beat! The goal of the game is to survive without humiliation reaching critical levels, and to strive for the highest score possible!

Please explain how your game fits the theme.
As you may know, Eurovision is the world's largest song competition. It is broadcast live across the world each year, and is watched by many millions! As a lead performer, all eyes are on you... the world is watching!

Did you use Generative AI to make any assets in your game?
No

Is there anything you'd like the judges to pay particular attention to?
We pushed ourselves out of our comfort-zone on this project in a few areas and learned new things.
- We learned about beat/button matching and latency.
- We worked with 3D environments.
- We added more animation frames to our sprites.
- And made a more complex state machine for our characters.

Also please note that every and all asset we made was made for this project during the 2 week time period.

Playability:
Really difficult to get the hang of at first but I had fun towards the end of my play session. Would love to see more visual indicators of the timing involved to make this easier. Incredibly energetic music.

Theme:
Fits the theme loosely in that the entire club is watching your every move.

Cleverness:
Really clever overall. It's rare to see a rhythm game and rarer so to see once with this much going on at once.

Artistic Style:
Great pixel art and effects. Fully voice acted section for the tutorial which is nice to see. The music was incredible.

Thank you for playing and for your review. It’s great, constructive and kind.

I don’t know if we weren’t clear enough, or if you are unfamiliar with Eurovision. It’s far more than just a club’s worth of viewers. It is a world song contest, 30-40 countries compete every year. If you are not familiar with Eurovision, I recommend looking into it, some of the acts are just completely nuts.

Having said that, I understand it’s our responsibility to be clear with our intentions in our game. I just think you’d get a kick out of Eurovision if you looked into it.

I’m glad you appreciate the difficulty our lead programmer took on by getting a rhythm game to remain in sync with music in a browser, our pixel art and especially that you liked the music.

We had ideas to add more visual indications and juice to successful moves, but time continued to march on regardless of our intentions.

I appreciate that you took the time to get past the difficulty, git gud, and give the game a chance! I love the community you've built.

So charming! I loved the sick beats, I laughed out loud whenever I fell off the stage and was told I shamed my country, and I thought that adding in movement to follow your spotlight was a clever and satisfying way to add difficulty to a simple rhythm game. Great game.

This game was difficult to get a hang of but that's because I'm terrible at rhythm games. The art and music are well done. Nice job with adding the latency adjustment it helped a lot when I was trying to play along with the beat. Did have a problem where the game thought my wasd keys were movement keys and vice versa. I tried to just move a couple of times ignoring the dance and it would dance or I would just try to dance with wasd and it would move.  Keep up the great work this game was a lot of fun!

It was difficult to get the hang of it in the beginning, playing around with the latency really helped though! I really liked what you did here!

This was a really clever rhythm game!

The concept combined with the eurobeat made it super energetic — I found myself moving along to the beat the whole time. What I especially liked was that it wasn’t just about pressing buttons in rhythm; having to follow the spotlight added a dynamic layer, requiring active reactions and pattern memorization for mastery. It made the gameplay feel deeper and more engaging.

Really fun experience!

lovely and fun game! I love all the dance moves, the "combos" and how you can dance while you get the news that the main performer was hit by a bus xD great work!

I had the joy to experience a (short) bit of this submission. Good application of the theme and really funky tune. Sadly im not too good at rhythym games so I only got to 10k at max. Was there any visual indicator for the input timings?

Developer

Thanks for trying our game. You adjust the latency on the pause screen [p] or on the fail screen. Changing the latency can make the game easier. The star at the bottom of the screen changes colors to the beat. We had thought about having the camera bounce to the beat, but never got the fine tuning to make it noticeable but not too distracting down before the deadline.

Took a couple of tries before I quite understood what I was supposed to do, but once I got it it was a really fun experience. I love that you added a setting for chaning the input, and the animations where amazing! Well done!

Damn that got difficult! Fun idea, I really enjoyed the pacing. Felt like a good difficulty curve. That's not always easy to pull off!

Developer

Thanks for trying it out! : )

That was very fun haha. It's a cool game, and the only thing I'd note is that I think it could feel nicer if you could do dance moves while moving. I felt that whenever I moved large distances, half of the bar would fill up, and missing just 1 or 2 timings would make me lose as well.

Fun idea :)

Developer

Thanks for playing! There are some dance moves you can move  in, such as the Rasputin and Twirl, but you are graded on hitting a button press on every beat.

Developer

My high score is 96k. I wonder if over 100k is even possible?

Definitely improvements from before, pretty cool!

Yay! Thank you for playing (twice!)
