Is your game set to public on itch.io so we can see it?
Yes

Summarize your game!
For the Crowd is a top-down arcade stunt game where survival depends on spectacle. Pull insane car tricks, stay entertaining, and keep the broadcast alive. When the world stops watching, the game ends.
Your goal is to evade the police for as long as possible while entertaining those that are watching you on live television with sick tricks.

The whole theme of For the Crowd is based on the idea that the Player has wrecked havoc in the city by stunting around, and now they're being broadcasted on live television. While the Player evades the police as best as they can, the viewers are cheering them on, because let's be real, seeing a someone drive a car that way is just awesome.

The Player may steer the car with "A" and "D", and drive forward with "W". To jump, they may press "Space", and while on air, they may press "Space" again to do cool tricks. Bouncing off of obstacles or jumping over police are also cool tricks!

Please explain how your game fits the theme.
For the Crowd fits the theme "The World is Watching" because the Player is being broadcasted on live television to the whole world, and there's groups of viewers watching them and cheering them on as they evade the police with their cool stunts and tricks.

The World is Watching, so do it For the Crowd.

Did you use Generative AI to make any assets in your game?
No

Is there anything you'd like the judges to pay particular attention to?
Nothing in particular! This is a horizontal prototype, so all core features have been developed and are ready for judging :)

Playability:
Incredibly easy to understand and play. I actually loved this in its simplicity and fun factor. Nice work.

Theme:
The theme was the weakest part of this submission. Audience interest doesn't seem to tie to gameplay in any real way other than having a bar. Tricks also fill the bar instantly so it's not much in terms of difficulty.

Cleverness:
Incredibly clever design overall. Playing a skateboard trick style game as a car is surprisingly super fun and hilarious. Really enjoyed all of the tiny touches like text tile and sound for tricks and other elements. Very well done.

Artistic Style:
Consistent and polished. Everything looks great and feels great to play with. The art here adds to the game without getting in its way. Love it.

Developer

Thank you for playing and rating my game!

Had a special focus on leaving space for the player to learn the controls (and force them to learn that jumping on obstacles bounces them), so glad to hear it was easy to understand and play!

Agree on the theme aspect, it's one of those things that becomes clearer after the jam ends, so I'll take that into more account in future game jams.

Thank you for the feedback :)

This was a fun little game!

I like that you add police chasing you the longer you play.

I struggled with the steering a bit, however that might just come down to preference. Maybe entertain following the mouse/cursor to steer?

The graphics/ movement and overall style was really well implemented. It plays very smoothly and the style is cohesive.

Really Good Job!

Developer

I never thought of using the mouse to steer, that's an interesting idea! :)

Thank you so much for playing and providing feedback!

Feels juicy and fun. Super hyped doing tricks while avoiding cops, and the music really adds to it.

One small issue I ran into: right now when a bounce starts, your speed is fixed and so does player input. So if you bounce onto something really slow, you have to sit there waiting for the car landing. In some edge cases, like when your speed is almost zero, the car get stuck on the edge of an obstacle and keep bouncing forever. (Kinda fun farming score though lol, feels like a hack.)

Overall a solid arcady experience!

Developer

Thank you so much for the feedback!

I did run into that issue while testing the game, it led to some funny situations of score farming indeed haha. I reckon a way to deal with that situation could be having a speed boost on trick performed, or maybe have a specific trick or dash implemented that can get the player out of that situation. Or maybe the bounce gives a little nudge forward. Not sure what the best approach would be :P

Fun game. I felt the driving was really smooth and had a bit of a drifting feel which was nice. The bouncing on houses to avoid cops was nice. I wish I had more stunts to pull off in the air.

Developer

Hello! Definitely, having more stunts would have been much cooler! I'm thinking, for the future, what might be the best approach in terms of controls for more stunts and tricks.

Thank you for playing and providing feedback! ;)

Fun little submission, would have liked to have a bit more but given the time frame of the jam a smaller more polished product like this is definitely a good choice. Some more environmental interaction, or different speed boost options would have helped feel more frantic I feel since I for the most part did not feel threatened by the cops if I just jumped to the top left and back down to the bottom left across houses over and over.

Developer

Seems to be a common thread among the comments: it's interesting, but having a bit more to do (tricks, environment interactions, modifiers) would make the core experience much funner.

The cop's AI and the overall level design contributed to that being the case (just jumping around would make you evade them), and that was somewhat my expectation. More than having a perfect balance, I'd prefer to have a game that's more on the easier side and would give an interesting experience for 5 minutes, at least.

Thank you for playing and for providing feedback! :)

Loved the smoothness and the animations of it. The cops following and increasing in number was also a nice touch. The downside is that I didn't really get a feeling of wanting to play it for more than one good run. Some different modifyers (like speed, jump range or cop spawn time) or different maps with other mechanics (like rail grinding or something like a surf board you can use on water) could be some good upgrade paths going forward.

I also have to admit that I didn't really notice the audience until after I read the description. So maybe a tutorial or a notification about that in the start would be good?

But all in all, the gameplay felt really nice, and is absolutely something that can be expanded on.

Developer(+1)

Yeah, that makes sense! With all of the core  mechanics down, now would be the time to just enhance with more content, be it more tricks, interactions, modifiers, etc etc :)
Regarding the audience, thank you for the heads up! It's one of those things where, as the developer, it seems obvious that there's a connection, but it doesn't work like that most of the time.

Thank you for playing and taking the time to provide feedback!

agree it was a very cute game! just wish there was more to do. I kept wanting to destroy other cars by bouncing on them. Even the trees shaking, and dropping leaves would have been cool. everything felt a bit static. It was fun, but i don't know how long it would stay fun for

Developer

Thanks for playing!

For sure adding more interaction between all elements would boost the gameplay a lot, thank you for the suggestion :)

The pixel art is really A+! I think music could use a bit of volume up and I would add some destruction to terrain :D

Developer

Was afraid of having the music too high haha, thanks for the tip!

It would a lot of fun to have overall destruction to the environment, for sure :)
