The title and cover art quickly grabbed my attention. I wasn't sure what to expect, but found it to be a lot of fun to read. I'm still not sure which games you were assigned for inspiration, so its hard to determine how they were implemented.
The healing from the explosion got me laughing out loud. I dunno man, I would prep a ninja game just to have a huge inverse ninja fight. Enjoyed the read a lot, actually usable class and lineage despite the tone!
I will now forever shout "Ninja Vanish" whenever I try to be subtle. Had a great laugh, this is straight to the point. Really good job.
The Real Ultimate Power-style vibes are flawless. However, I feel like you were kinda cheating on your Inspiration assignment there with Anticipation. (And the Jackie Chan game, if I'm honest. And Ninja Gaiden III isn't really represented by any more than the general concept of "ninja", though sure, that counts.)
I'm bothered when people skip straight through the operating instructions and setup, thinking they can be a ninja without following proper ninja protocol. Those people bum me out, until I remember that I was raised by ninjas and *ZING!* shuriken to the face.
Ninja Vanish!
The layout is amazing, the writing is a ton of fun, and the class is definitely playable. And the sample enemies are good. This killed it, such good work!
I lol'd. I like the presentation of material as a literal instruction manual. I feel like Anticipation could have been incorporated more, though.
Very fun read! I feel like it authentically captures an attitude toward game design communication that informed a lot of titles that were on the NES.
OMG I love how you pulled 3 ninja games. Great job creating this in-your-face ninja game.
Dunno if I'd call "Anticipation" a ninja game - but I think I made it all work. :)
Wonderful and witty. I agree that it is more Ninja Gaiden-inspired and maybe too much strong in-your-face language, but that fits the 80s feel very well, but I wish it had more visuals.
I based it on the Anticipation manual, which only had screenshots of the controller and TV. Plus, the Nintendo booklet format left me a very tight window to write in. But yeah, I had some great art picked out for this one at never got used. Maybe I'll go back and put it in after the Jam is over.
Awesome job. Very sharp and hilarious, but still very gameable. A very strong influence from Ninja Gaiden and a lesser degree for the other two. But come on, 80s Ninjas that is hard to beat.
