Magik and Team-Building Exercise

Hi,

While playing with Magik  [0.5.9.188]-magik-en_sabah_nur-expert-(18)-(1057832924).json, I had Utopia (which is an X-Men card) on top of the deck, but I was unable to use Team-Building Exercise to discount it. In general, I was not able to use Team-Building Exercise to discount the cost of cards on top of the deck, but I think I should (Magik has a constant ability that lets her play a card from the top of the deck as it were in her hand).

Thanks in advance!

Hi @quantumodo,

Thank you for your bug report regarding cards “12024” and “45030a”, and for sharing your save file.

However, we don’t believe this is a bug. The text of “45030a” states:

You may play the top card of your deck as if it were in your hand.

We interpret this to mean that the top card of your deck can only be treated as if it were in your hand for the purpose of playing it. It may not qualify as a legal target for “12024”, which requires a card that is actually in your hand.

We aren’t entirely certain this interpretation is correct. If you find any FAQs that clarify this, please let us know.

Thank you!

Hi, thanks for looking into this. This has been ruled explicitly by FFG:

189 – I have two questions regarding Magik’s ability to play the top card of her deck as if in hand: “Once per phase, you may play the top card of your deck as if it was in your hand, reducing its resource cost by 1.” 1. Can I play her ally Colossus in the villain phase from the top of her deck using his ability “Interrupt: When an enemy attacks you, play Colossus from your hand (paying his resource cost) and declare him the defender without exhausting him.”? 2. Can I play the top card of her deck with Team-Building Exercise: “Hero Action: Exhaust Team-Building Exercise → play a card from your hand that shares a trait with your hero, reducing its resource cost by 1.”?

Yes; using Magik’s ability, you can play Colossus (AOA #31) from the top of your deck during the villain phase and trigger his Interrupt ability. Yes; while playing a card from the top of your deck as Magik, it is considered to be “in your hand” for abilities such as Team-Building Exercise. (However, the card is not considered in your hand for other purposes, such as when you need to spend a resource or discard a card “from hand.”)

Thanks in advance!

Hi @quantumodo,

Thank you for your update and for providing the FAQ.

We will update “12024” to work for any card that is considered to be “in hand”, including cards from the top of Magik’s deck and Lockjaw in the discard pile.

Thank you once again for your input!

Excellent, thank you!
