How does your game represent "Slick"?
Captain Redbeard covered his boat in oil so that he could take it inland. We did not end up creating a visual representation of this, so instead you can assume the ship is just magic. The ship slips slickly, steadily slashing property values and strikingly skyrocketing damage to the surrounding civilian cityscape

Lol i too loved the pirate facecam XD and your music was great~ Also pretty fun to upgrade and try to cause as much destruction as possible XD

Pirate face-cam adds a lot to this !!

Developer

Thank you so much for playing! It was something I really debated the value of adding but it seems to be the first thing people notice!

Love the MS paint art, 10/10 art direction. Gameplay was a bit rough, I was able to win, but often I would crash into some sort of impassable wall immediately? And I felt like crashing through the buildings in front of me and cannoning them behind me were goals that were a bit at odds with each other. Still, got a bunch of upgrades and beat it. Nice work!

SO glad you like my art direction. This is a big deal coming from the skeleton simulator guy. Yes, the wall was one of the last things implemented (the day of!) and the worst part is I know exactly where in the code the issue happens, but I can't fix it because the am is over! And yeah, the cannons probably should have been left on the chopping block. The gameplay loop just doesn't support them as they exist, but they were added early and I just sort of hoped functionality would bloom around it. My mom's a gardener so I should know that all that ever blooms around things unprompted are weeds. Thank you for playing!

Yarr let's plunder the land and the seas! Love the facial expression sprites in the corner, and some nice sfx. Sometimes I couldn't really tell why I was going far or stopping early, wish I could slide for a bit longer. Cool game!

Developer

Thank you so much for playing! Redbeard holds Captain Oylslick in the highest regard. I'm really glad the sound and portrait works for you; it's gratifying to have my features appreciated. But yes, very valid criticisms. Who would think that a game called Slip Ship would be slipshod. Ultimately we just ran out of time to make the system the best it could be. Thank you for playing either way!

Quite fun, I just did not quite understand how to win the game.

Developer

Understandable. We came down to the wire on a lot of things (team of college students) and I think a few coats more polish would have done us some good. I'm glad you had some fun though. Thank you for playing!

Nice launch game! the sound effects were nice and I really enjoy the idea! at the beginning it was a bit hard to understand what I was supposed to do but I got the hang of it later

Developer

Thank you so much for playing! We're all college students, so things got down to the wire in terms of finishing the game. Glad you were able to figure it out in the end!

That's fun one!

Yessss a launch game! These were so sorely missed. I will say the cannon didn't always seem like it worked super well and sometimes the big X wall was THE first obstacle you'd run into (like, pretty often), but I am always on board with this type of game and highly recommend this genre making a comeback!

I do wish the ship was covered in oil visually to help sell the slickness because the description of such a thing is a very silly concept!

Developer(+1)

I'm so glad you understand the vision! This game came down to the wire on a lot of things. The cannons were implemented very early on, but their functionality was left until very late. The wall wasn't implemented until hours before shipping. It TOTALLY was the plan to have the ship be oil-slick'd with particle effects, but it wasn't my responsibility and it just never got done. Somewhere down the line I may try to get the game into a more finished state, but for now that's the rub unfortunately. Thankfully, speed upgrades level 3 and above let you start fast enough to go right through it if I recall correctly. Thank you so much for playing!

I loved the music!

Developer

Thanks for playing! The music was the one part we couldn't make amongst ourselves, so the credit belongs to Antti Martikainen for "Hymn of the High Seas Vol. 2"

I really like the expressions of the pirate in the top right. Reminds me of Pizza Tower.

Developer(+1)

It seems to be a fan favorite feature! I don't think myself much of an artist, so to be compared in any way to what may be the slickest game ever made is a great honor. Thank you so much for playing!

Submitted

wow oh wow this game is good!
The troll face made me laugh every time lol

Developer(+1)

I'm really glad I implemented the reaction image. It seems to be a fan favorite feature, and it was a really nice challenge to create a morph from my standard beardy pirate to... the creature. Thank you so much for playing (and following my install instructions!)

Fun concept, loved the pirate shanty soundtrack!

Developer

Thanks so much for playing! We unfortunately did not have a composer amongst us, so the music is all from Antti Martikainens "Hymn of the High Seas Volume 2"

Submitted

wow oh wow this game is good

The music went sO HARD IT WAS PHENOMENAL!!! Love the guys face in the top right, love the gameplay!!! The victory screen?!?! Immaculate!!!

Some SFX overlap, but I had an enjoyable time anyway :D

Developer (1 edit)

Thank you so much for following my instructions! I didn't have a composer for this game, so I had to default to Antti Martikainen's "Hymn of the High Seas Volume 2" which is an unfathomably good standard for land-based city destruction pirate games. So glad you enjoyed your time playing!

Submitted

not the troll face lmao neat concept! thought it was comical to have a pirate looting the city instead of other ships! SFX are a tad loud

Developer(+1)

We do a little destruction of infrastructure... and a little sound volume balancing. It seems that maybe we should have done a little more. My concern was mostly with making sure everything COULD be heard and not necessarily if it SHOULD be heard. I appreciate the feedback and am very grateful you played! Glad you appreciated the our concept!

Loved the portrait, loved the chaos

Developer

The art for that portrait was among the first thing I made for the project, but was one of the last things I implemented. In the end I can't imagine the game without it. I'm so glad that you enjoyed! Thank you for playing!

Submitted

I'm in love with the idea that a boat is just crashing on land and levelling a city, lots of chaos and made me chuckle

Developer

They just don't make wooden ships capable of destroying massive amounts of public infrastructure like they used to... Really glad you got a laugh out of our game!

Submitted

I love the concept! i think things go a little too fast for me to understand what is going on, these types of games have that effect on me.  This game has a lot of character!

Developer

Yeah, the game ended up having a bit of an all-or-nothing sort of pace, and the balancing is not quite perfect. I'm glad you appreciate our concept and character though! I definitely think that's what the game hinges upon (as the art director especially)

Reminds me of that flash game Duck's Life! very cool

Developer

Run-and-Upgrade type games like Duck's Life and Burrito Bison were a big inspiration in making this. Really glad you think it's cool!
