How does the game fit the theme?
The game leans heavily on real-world "strange" science

Each level in the game represents a real place. On its own, these places could be seen as "strange" given the extraordinary nature of what they do (for example, detecting black holes merging).

But the places are also connected (in the game only, I don't know enough science to say this is true lol) to "strange particles" which are real things too.

Ultimately, Particle Pursuit tries to fit the theme by emphasizing that there are extremely strange things in our real world

What code and assets did you not make from scratch during the jam (if any)?
Everything was done by me, except by

- All of the music and SFX were downloaded from
https://opengameart.org/

- The font is Google's Orbitron
https://fonts.google.com/specimen/Orbitron

Developer

thank you! I appreciate it

I had so much fun playing this game, It took me 15 minutes to only beat the laser part lol. Maybe something that has room to improvement is the lore and the dialogues with Einstein, beside that it's a really good entry, maybe the difficulty curve it's not that linear (for example: I finished the first level on the first try but then had to suffer in the laser level) but it's a minor problem imo, good job!

Developer(+1)

thank you so much for playing, I'm very glad you had fun! and I agree with the feedback, especially the difficulty curve - the game went through quite a lot of adjustments throughout but didn't end up in a nice, gradual difficulty - but I'm very happy at least you had fun still :)

The graphical style is fitting and works very well. I have no problem with the audio but it's not the highlight of the game (perhaps some more feedbacks could be cool). The gameplay was varied and fun, the last boss was just the right difficulty for me I lost 5 - 6 times but it felt deserved and made me try directly again. The narration and mini game choice don't mesh well imo. I don't really feel like I'm doing particle research with Einstein with platformer casual mini games but it's a minor problem since in the end I had a lot of fun. Great submission!

Developer

thank you for playing! glad you were able to complete :) and I appreciate the feedback

These thoughts may sound random, I wrote them down while playing…

The graphics are on point. From the twinkling star to some chemical substance being heated on the desk, to the animated face of the scientist as he speaks to us. The use of differently colored letters to put an accent on certain words. And that moon is absolutely beautiful! Amazing job on the pixel art.

The game idea fits the theme perfectly. Definitely, LHC, LIGO, and IceCube Observatory are WEIRD places. Being on the edge of scientific discovery is exciting but STRANGE at the same time.

This really could’ve just been me, but I stuck to the right edge of the LHC level because I didn’t bother to read all the instructions, and I’d been doing Flappy Bird for like five minutes only to realize that must not be how long that level is, is it… So I pressed pause and only then realized - no, you’re also supposed to move to the left. Maybe an additional indicator could be helpful for little dum-dums like me e.g. left arrow signs that are lit up in the background?

The difficulty curve is not quite right. The LHC level is hard. The LIGO level is pretty punishing. The IceCube is very easy.

Very funny writing! The scientist switching up our name, repeating “Strange” to really drive the idea home. And that peanut butter sandwich, a really fun way to break the gameplay only to ramp it up with the plot twist! The boss level was very nice, I love how you combined all the elements from the previous levels. And it was a good idea to add the countdown there.

The music and SFX choices were great, not too distracting, very fitting for each level as the background music, and perfectly cued for what happened e.g. hitting the laser.

Overall, I didn’t find any bugs, I played it from beginning till end while really enjoying it, and you did it developing it alone? Fantastic work, keep it up!

I really appreciate you taking the time to write such great feedback. To answer your question first, I did develop this solo and this was the first game jam I've been in. So to have someone play the game, enjoy it, and take the time to write all of this, means a lot to me.

I'm with you on all the points, you are definitely not a dum-dum - after submitting the game a few people playtested and told me they'd be doing flappy bird for a while. And the difficulty curve is true, I needed more time to make the levels build more gradually, but just got stuck on other things :') big lessons learned from this very fun process

thank you again for playing, and the time to give your thoughts, I really appreciate it!

  • Really fun to see science used to show strange places. The lore with this well known mustache guy was really fun. The mechanics of each level were fun: the Flappy Bird variation for the first one, the laser maze on the second, the aim and click for the third.

  • The Boss battle was pretty similar to the first level mechanic, with the walls being laser an addition. Maybe there could be something that you could click to add the third level mechanic as well.

Really nice game, liked it a lot :)

Developer(+1)

thank you very much for playing and for the feedback :)

and I agree, originally my idea was to introduce a small mechanic each level, and then the boss fight would combine that.... but y'know.... things changed quite a bit along the way hahah

Haha I understand, game Jams have those big changes in the last days, and it’s perfect as well. We found that our Rhythm game was not fun enough in the first days, and did the “hold the note” mechanic in the last day almost, and it was totally worth it. Your theme implementation with science was 100/10, so congrats :) <3

Honestly, this is something I could play all the time even if it wasn't part of a game jam. Great game!

Developer

that means a lot, thank you!

I like you have creative minigames :D

Developer

thank you :)

Nice game ^^

As feedback, I’d suggest adding a progress bar so you know when the end is coming.

But good work — keep going!

Developer

thank you!

Enjoyment: I had a blast, while some of the minigames felt more enticing than others, overall this was a fun experience the whole playthrough.

Gameplay: Simple Controls, easy to learn. Love that input methods were reused for the games.

Innovation: I'd guess theres a lot of variations of those types of minigames, but clustering them in a meaningful way was done here pretty well. Additionally tieing the overlapping theme into them achieved without immersion breaking. Well done.

Theme: Possibly the only "weaker" category or rather where my personal view/opinion deviates a bit of this overall really great submission...it felt like it was more a focus of strange phenomenon/things and less about the where. But maybe I need to revisit the though later again.

Visuals: I love the art, all of it, 5/5.

Audio: The tracks and sfxs selected were enchaning the flow-state, allowed focusing on the task while not remaining in radio silent.

This is so far one of my favorites in the jam - Great Job!

Developer

thank you so much for playing and for the feedback. This was my first game jam and I had such a great time making the game, and hearing others enjoyed it is extremely rewarding. I really appreciate it!

Really nice music! I like how the boss music synced up with the timer counting down.

Developer

thank you!

interesting way to interpret the theme, the game was fun if a little simple, no real feedback to be given here other than work on your game feel.

8/10 :)

The humor is great. Nice mini games, takes a little bit to get used to the fall speed but its fun!

Developer

thanks for playing and the feedback! :)

love the game over screen physics facts! this game has a perfect difficulty, could be a bit frustrating but just as much to motivate me to get over the levels and gave me great satisfaction when i finally finished the boss fight. very original tone and vibe, amazing music choice and fun gameplay and story. great job!

Developer

thanks for playing! I am very glad you finished and that you have fun :) really appreciate you dropping a comment

Cool game! I like the unique theme and strong story elements that you sprinkled in. I had trouble getting beyond the first level. I think if it didn't just restart me or gave me an idea of how far I was, I would've kept going. I felt like I got close to the end but then died too many times. Good vibe/music/art though! Wish I got to see the other games.

Developer

sorry to hear about your struggle on the first level. I also received similar feedback from others, so I could have definitely improved things here. The player needs to touch the left wall to proceed, there is a thin green bar that indicates where. Maybe you have time to try again :) would love to see what you think of the rest. And if not, I already really appreciate you playing and the feedback! thank you

Submitted(+1)

Oh thanks for letting me know! I thought after enough time I'd reach the end. That made it much more manageable and I was able to beat the game! Solid game. I think the gameplay isn't the strong point, but you tie everything together with good style, art, and a fun story. I liked the interpretation of the theme, and how you colored strange every time. Great job!

Developer

ahh im so glad! thanks for trying again : )and you are 100% right, this was my first solo project so I tried to complete everything but in retrospect (and especially after seeing others' games) the actual gameplay could be a lot stronger. Thanks again!

Submitted(+1)

Yeah great job, especially for a solo project! It was definitely ambitious and execution overall was solid.

Also if you haven't already, it would mean a lot if you had chance to check out our game. It's also got some minigames, but no awesome story. :) Thanks!

Submitted(+1)

That was fun, and pretty Strange. The dialogue was absolutly amazing, I loved it, and the gameplay was fun as well, really enjoyed it! Also didnt know I could fail at making a pb&j.

Great game! Keep it up!❤

Developer

glad you liked it! thanks for playing

Submitted(+1)

The main part of the game i liked is that it provides you real scientific facts as you fail, And yeah the mixing of different games puzzeles with particles is a nice way of making a game

Cheers, Silent Comet

Developer

thank you! appreciate it
