There are a lot of tiny details in the art that are AWESOME once I finally noticed. Really enjoyed the dungeon crawl aspect of the game. It just needs work in the audio and art implementation department. Great job overall!

Developer

Thanks! Tried my best on, apreciated that you liked it!

Nice game you got here! I enjoyed the cute ending and it was a nice touch :) I actually did enjoy the jump in difficulty with the skeleton level even though it was quite a leap. I always love more challenge but that might just be me. I would have loved some more sounds, maybe a walking sound and then something like a staticy or firey hum for the AoE spell. Overall though, nice work! Thanks for making and sharing it :)

Developer

Thank you kind sir. I feel you, i'm a turture enjoyer myself too when it comes to gaming, the sound part its all on me, i really lack on, but is already on the list of improving, after enemy IA at least. I will see that firey hum effect, thanks for sharing too!

this is a solid game that I'd like to see fleshed out more, especially in the audio department and when it comes to balancing the strength of the AOE vs small attacks. I think the AOE is still quite spammable even though there is a magick meter.

Developer

Yea, I made it stronger, buffed the magic regen, health regen and damage on the last day bc i thougth that newer gamers would feel it to be too punishing, shame on me, shame on me.

Your art skills are incredible, there's so many tiny details that I love, the combat is satisfying and leads to some cool moments. That being said, the player artwork and animation is so good that the Knights lack of animation, when compared to the player and slimes, does stand out. Overall a great game, likely top 10 for this jam, my full review is below

Developer

Thanks. Sadly, I ran out of time for the knight, so it turned out a little chopped. Kind of you to up me in the top 10, and great video.

The big button that said "Go To Hell" got a big laugh out of me. Nice work!

Developer

So good to known!! Hes not the demon favorite cultist for nothing haha

Nice game for a first-jammer solo dev! Of course there was a lot of space for polishing, but I know how hard it is to do everything by yourself, and it already had all the elements of a playable game, so you can be proud of it.

Some notes that I took:

  • Some sound effects for the spells and maybe hit/damage would go a long way. Especially for the area spell.
  • While we are at it, the area spell was my favourite, against the slimes I didn't even use the projectile spell, just herded them together and hit 5-8 of them with the explosion. It felt satisfying.
  • The enemies in Hell felt like a leap in difficulty, because it seemed like they were at least as fast as me, so as soon as you navigated into two of them, it was hard to keep the distance and any distance you lost could not be regained. It could ease the difficulty and provide the player with some more tactical tools/choice if you could gain some distance either by using obstacles in the terrain or maybe some slowing spell.
  • I liked the minimap, it was useful. Some of the text in the beginning took a whole lot of screen space and I had to hide the minimap to read it.
  • I always appreciate procedural generation. Did you use Godot's noise library? Did you add any other rules, maybe to ensure that the map is always navigable?

Overall, nice work and keep developing!

Developer

Nice of you to say that, much appreciated! I’m currently polishing the game and some sprites (learning a lot too).

Yeah, I definitely need to take a good look at the soundtrack its my weak point, ngl. I made the skeletons very fast almost the same speed as the player, because I thought the sprint option wouldn’t be used in the game as much as i wanted but maybe they’re too aggressive. Right now, I’m learning some enemy AI to improve this part.

The UI was kind of rushed because I didn’t have the time to make it properly, sorry about that.

Yup! I used noise, I made three layers terrain, fauna, and flora, after that I made sure the player always spawns after the procedural generation, near the beach and also ensured that everything has a Y value, with the terrain being the base layer.

Hey! This was a fun time to play and I especially loved the little illustration at the end! The procedural animation and the inclusion of the mini map was really nice! Slime animation goes craaaazy! Who doesn't love a good soul soup among friends?

Developer

Thanks for sharing, and i'm glad you had fun!

Food is always best when shared with our loved ones :D

Hey!

Good submition for a first try!

The minimap, the procedural generation and the story are definitelly plusses.

I would have loved some audio for the game, even juste a free sountrack, try to prepare a audiomanager so you can reuse it easily between jams (a music bus with a background track and a sfx bus with somme sound effects triggering by signal are great to have in a global script)

The wasd is not very practical for us weirdos that use azerty keyboards, the ability to rebind stuff feels good. it's also quite easy to implement from one game to another, you will build those feature as you keep jamming.

Have you done the art yourself? I don't feel like it is but I'll be glad to bump your score if you did so tell me ;)

Keep at it, it's a good start!

Cheers

Developer

Hi!
Thanks it was a very fun project.
I started the sound thing but ended up with no time and knologe to implement it.
all the game sprites was made by me on aseprite with exception of the final, that master piece was a gift from my gf, you can see a little of in the icon.
Apreciated and noted all of the improvements mentioned, thanks king!

The "Go to hell" text made me laugh so hard when I saw it, just because it was so unexpected. Cool game though. I like the concept of soul soup.

Developer

Good to know! Soul soup is the best, especially when enjoyed with the company of your favorites. :D

A pleasant survivor-type game with a surprisingly wholesome ending.

Developer

Thanks!!

I like good endings

I was so sure I was going to end up in the soup.  My bad for judging.

Fun game though, the Q ability felt super strong and after relying on it in the slime level, having to dodge the skeletons while waiting on the mana to recharge was an interesting change of pace.

Developer(+1)

Hey, where did you got that idea? was not like a demon would do that! hahaha

I was afraid that the skeletons was OP with almost the same speed of the player, good to knwon that its not completly broken, thanks!

I really dig the nervous cultist idle animation! Love a game with a funny little guy. I was a bit unclear why I went to hell, but that was fun anyway!

Developer

Thanks! i tryied the best of my pixel-art skills in the little guy.

I made him go there to pick up skeleton souls bc its spicy, and they all about "I should have done that or I didn’t make through that", all about sorrow... the demon likes it spicy, you know...

Ooooooh procedural generation, really cool!!! I love how it looks, and it was satisfying gathering a few enemies up to bomb all at once. Enemies and me were both getting stuck on geometry occasionally, though on my part it was probably skill issue haha. Nice work!

Developer (1 edit) (+1)

I really scrembled my brains on that procedural.

nah, i dont think is skills issue i definitely need to take a good look in enemy IA and how to make geometry better.

Thanks!
